Hahaha Vex Darkly, you never cease to amaze me, I was already under the impression that you do with the "featured for comments" section haha
In all seriousness, you've got good standing on here, so there's probably no need, besides, I've read the poem a few dozen times and it never grows old LOL
Let me change that to "in the forums before"
I see people promoting poetry here all the time so I figured I'd post as well.
No harm no foul.
It's my one shameless, "everybody read this" poem. I feel I'm entitled to just one of those
However, on this occasion, this piece does stand alone compared to your other work, woven with irony, playful jest and it retracts seriousness in a serious way, it's not often you find (in your case, wrote) a poem formed successfully in this fashion....... and I will admit, I've not come across anything like this on my travels whilst surfing the cyber waves.
I'm quite happy with how it turned out, actually ^_^
I've even had some professional poet attempt to steal it and write it off as his own.
He changed some of the wording and used it to attack a fellow poet, making that poet the subject. I was rather appalled
Although appalling to find a pro trying to steal it and passing it off as their own, it sort of compliments at the same time, it brings into light your ability, quality and conviction as a poet. It's a good job that you used AP and it's ability to copyright your work in cases as such as this.
Indeed, and I was quite grateful to the friend who spotted it (she was merely an acquaintance at the time, and was wondering whether I had been the one to steal it). I contacted the publishing company and it was discovered that I was not the first he had nicked poetry from on this site
Needless to say, he retired shortly afterwards.
That was back when this poem (and myself) were relatively unknown, so by now I doubt anyone would get away with trying to nick it when almost 2000 people have read it by now (2000!? Flipping heck! I never imagined ANYTHING I did would be seen by 2000 people)
And that brings us back full circle to shamelessly promoting hahaha
Regardless of what has or will be said and by whom, you're doing well for your self, I haven't a clue how many of these you have left in you, but keep it up. Thinking out of the box has it's own merits.
Oh goodness, I highly doubt I'll ever write another poem anywhere near as popular.
I guess in terms of AllPoetry fame I'm kind of a one-hit wonder, barely comparable to some of the truly great poets on this site, but hey, may as well make the most of my one good piece, huh?
Vex, i hate poems is an excellent poem, and you can do whatever you want but haven't you written any good poems since then? you've probably gotten what, five hundred comments on I Hate Poems, do you really need more feedback on it. I'd be burnt out on it.
dave
hey rob-it shouldn't but it irks me when someone runs the same old tired poem over and over, the whole fun of this place is writing a new piece and seeing what people think, after say a hundred comments what can you get out of any more new comments.
dave
It is always mediocre work too. This site is such that mediocre work seems, (to anyone but a few who restrict their reading to the 40 or so really good poets here) to be spectacular. Why someone wants to buy hundreds of gushing unqualified "critiques" is beyond me.
If the "Johnny Redbreasts" would only submit their mediocrity to a few top journals, or even do some readings, they would soon understand their place in the poetic sphere. The gushing over work that may even be quite bad is funny in a sad sort of way, but the few that buy more and more of that gushing drivel border on pitiful.
that may be true, i'll be diplomatic here, to me a poem is analogous to a bottle of champange when its new its all bubbly but after awhile it loses its fizz, i've seen poets at readings trot out the same tired pieces from say five years ago and it doesn't get the same reaction it got years ago. The poet is bored with the piece and i think the audience senses that, but the exicting thing about poetry to me, is writing the next piece and seeing the impact, the response, if i were a poet in the purest sense which i'm not, i think i would write and discard, the essence is in the doing.

Yep. I see the one trick ponies at readings all the time. There is actually a type. They "publish" one chapbook by the press at the college where they got their MFA, or another where the prof. made a deal for an "exchange" publication. That is the publication they are promised for the 40 grand the MFA costs. They read those tired poems for a decade, along with the three a year they still write. They even submit those three a year poems to different journals, again, again, again. You can tell them by the beret or the tweed jacket with the leather patches on the elbows.
I always want to punch them.
I do readings quite often, plus reading on the radio, at slams, etc. On the few occasions I've read the same poem even twice, I've felt like a dumbass. Usually, once I read one, I move on to new work. My stuff is mediocre, and the last thing I'm going to do is force feed it to the people who attend readings, or read me here again and again.
Readings are a blast. You should try some if you haven't. I think you'd enjoy the spoken word aspect. You seem to appreciate the, erm, music of poetry.
I was scared shitless for the first few, but generally, the folks at the smaller readings are very supportive of first time readers.
My very first one was really scary. Very early on, I placed second in a pretty good regional contest. I won a nice cash prize (100 bucks) and an invitation to a reading in a very nice theater with an audience of 150 or so, huge for a poetry reading. That made the typical reading with 20 people or so much less frightening. It is hard to get me away from a mic now.
Ah nice.
I have the problem of never being able to decide what poem would be worth reading, and the constant terror of humiliation for picking a terrible one -_-
I try to select something short to begin with. If you are going to try a first reading, just read some of your stuff with an eye towards "entertainment value" something funny or provocative somehow. Your hate one would work quite well.
Wish you were here for a minute. I love walking first timers through their first one so they don't have to sweat bullets like I did
Haha, I'll keep an eye out for an opportunity I suppose.
Poetry isn't very big down here (and not many people here actually know I AM a poet, it's kind of something I keep to myself), but if any college events come up I could always go have a look
Personally, if any poet is going to assume this is the only good poem I've ever written without ever making the effort to actually READ any of my other poems, then frankly they sound like the kind of people whose opinions I couldn't care less about it.
