Chapter 11

Pruitt watched Alpha as he swam and thought how at home the animal was
in the open ocean. As he swam towards her she felt that she had come to truly
know him, as if they were two parts of the same being. Alpha seemed to smile as
he approached and then exploded.

Pruitt jerked upright in her bed. She trembled slightly at the reality of the dream and how it exemplified the bond they had begun to share. It also identified the fear that using them for combat missions was inherently dangerous. She had only worked the animal for three days yet she believed that they had progressed far beyond the assigned training mission. Even in the short time they had worked together; they seemed to share an intuitive bond that anticipated each other. She especially marveled at the event of the prior day’s closing.

Pruitt had concluded the session, with her routine of rubbing him down with a soft bristle brush. Alpha would slowly roll in the water as she stroked him with the brush and on that day, had even grasped the brush when she had finished the rub down and started to place it onto the catwalk. He then returned it to her and rolled over, exposing his underbelly. She brushed that part again and tossed the brush onto the deck. As she began to pull herself onto the catwalk, Alpha eased under her and lifted her out of the water. She marveled at it the rest of the day. She paid a price in the harassment from the other Seals but still only smiled at the progress she had made, noting how little the others had accomplished.

Chief Carter’s prior experience allowed him a certain level of success but still more as a trainer than a partner. Pruitt decided to discuss his prior mission and to attempt a rapport with at least one member of the team. She waited outside the locker rooms as the men exited and caught Carter’s attention.

“Chief, can I talk to you a sec?” she asked.

“Aye Mam,” he replied and turned to the others. “You guys go on ahead. I’ll meet you at Salty’s for a couple brews later.”

“So…What’s up Lieutenant?”

“Listen Chief, do me a favor and just call me by my name. It’s Dianne and within the team I’d feel more comfortable.”

“I don’t know Mam. Just not natural somehow. How’s about I call you Pruitt? That fits okay.”

“Yeah but that still leaves me an outsider. Just like they call you Carter all the time. It’s kind of demeaning after all the time you guys spend together.”

“My God Pruitt! That’s what you’ve been thinking? No wonder you kept to yourself. They call me Carter because that’s what I am. Ask about Carter at any naval station and they’ll say, oh yeah, that old fart! What the hell, everybody that’s respected gets a handle. It‘s like the Diva. I love to rag on ‘em but he‘s right in the mix with the rest of us even though he carries video gear.”

“When you think about it,” Carter continued, “his job‘s more dangerous because he doesn‘t get the chance to look around. He‘s staring through a lens.”

“…and I’m Pruitt the Prude so I’m respected?” she countered derisively.

“Actually yeah. Look Pruitt nobody knew you; they knew your reputation but not you. When they met you, you were just Pruitt and it stuck. Now it’s yours. Nobody else will ever be Pruitt even if they have the same name. Ya get it don’t ya?”

“I get to keep the prude too?” she laughed and backhanded his shoulder.

“Nah, that’s just to get up in your face. Had to find how you handled yourself,” he laughed and lit the cigar he had been toying with. “ You mind Pruitt?”

“I have pretty strong gag reflexes Carter…just give me a minute to get you on the leeward side. You can poison someone else downwind.”

“So Pruitt, you any good at shootin pool?” asked the Chief as he savored a first long draw on the cigar.

“Do geese fly south in the winter, Carter?”

“So I’m to get that you’re a natural?” he asked, a smile beginning to form.

“Helped pay my way through the Academy. You thinking what I’m thinking Chief?” She laughed and held her hand up, rubbing her thumb across her finger tips.

“Yeah. damn right. It’s time to retire the Prude and bring out Pruitt the Hustler,” he laughed and repeated Pruitt’s hand gesture.

“How much you want me to hold back Carter?” she laughed and threw an arm lock around his neck.

“Hu yah! I’m gonna get rich.” Carter exclaimed. “You any good at pounding down a few brews too.”

“Drink like a Seal, Chief. Just lead me to the watering hole.”

“Salty’s tavern it is. I got a couple suckers waiting,” he remarked reaching back and thumping his wallet.

“Want to drive the ‘Vette’ Chief?” Pruitt asked as she flipped him the keys.

“You bet partner. I wouldn’t want you to strain your shootin hand,” and grabbed the keys in in mid arch. “Let’s roll!”
