A High School Horror {1}

Entering the school just as the bell for first period rang, Sam groaned under her breath knowing that she’d missed seeing all her friends that morning. She lugged her book bag and guitar into her first period, which was in the band room. She somewhat regretted taking guitar at this school, saying as she knew that she would lose interest far before the end of the year. It had happened before, and it was sure to happen again. She grumbled with her sleep-deprived voice as she opened the door to the band room, but was stopped as a hand was placed on her shoulder. She turned quickly out of fright, only to see Ms. Rivera, one of the guidance counselor’s at Hillcrest High. But she was the ninth grade counselor, why was she bothering a tenth grader?
“I need you in my office.” Ms. Rivera said with a smile. “I have to go find two others but just go on ahead in and make yourself comfortable.” She walked off as if this wasn’t scaring Sam in the least. But, of course, it was. Not only that it was a ninth grade counselor coming to a tenth grader, the fact that she never said what on earth was going on. Although, they didn’t really tell you until you got there.
“Oh, this is going to be a long day.” Sam muttered and closed the door to the band room and started her lone march to Ms. Rivera’s office. The main office of the school was placed outside of the commons area. Inside were some of the smaller offices, a maze that everyone feared to tread. But it wasn’t too hard to find because as soon as Sam came up to the main desk, she was directed right to where she needed to be. Being the first one that Ms. Rivera had found gave her the snooping advantage. And what a curious little cat Sam was. She quickly sat her things down on a chair and began her search. There wasn’t much, but she went to the nearest file cabinet and fingered through the papers. But her search was ended fast as she heard steps coming to the door. She shut the cabinet and ran to her things with an innocent look.
Sam waited with impatience as the door slowly opened and Tobias came in. “Oh, it’s you Tobi. Wait, Tobi?” she said to him.
“Hehe, I thought the same seeing you here.” Tobi replied. He was also in the tenth grade, and probably perplexed at seeing Sam here also. Already the both of them could sense that something was wrong here. Tobi walked in and took a seat, “I was on my way to first period when Ms. Rivera sent me over here.”
“She did the same to me.” Sam mumbled and was about to continue onto a rant when the door opened again to reveal Nicole and Ms. Rivera. “Nicole? Okay, what’s going on here?” Sam asked the counselor who completely ignored the question and walked straight to her desk and sat down.
“Please, take a seat.” Ms. Rivera said with a normal happy voice as if nothing was wrong in the world. It was these kind of calm and perfect people that drove Sam insane. But knowing that she was in school and this woman did have power over her, she took her seat and Nicole followed beside her. The two had been best friends since middle school and it was a wonder that they were here along with Tobi.
“Well, suppose I should get down to the point.” Ms. Rivera started. “I’ve called you three in here because I’ve personally selected you for an important experiment.”
“Like lab mice?” Tobi cut in.
“No, not like lab mice. You see it’s more of a study. You will stay the night in the school.”
“Okay, whoa.” Nicole said. “With the bugs and mice running around everywhere, this isn’t the best place for a slumber party.”
“Aside from that, this is very important like I’ve stated before. This will test how to three do spending time alone in a large facility like this over a designated amount of time.” She paused for a moment, “It’s kind of hard to explain.”
“Yeah, because that just flew right over my head.” Sam said to her. She did not agree with this study at all. She was a big believer of ghosts and stuff like that and she knew that there was bound to be some kind of spirit walking these halls at night.
“Now, I know you’ve all heard rumors about this school but I want you to forget them. They have nothing to do with this study. I’ve called your parents and told them that you would be staying the night here. Food and drinks will be provided and all the rooms in the school will be open for your use. But one thing to keep in mind, all of the doors and windows will be locked shut. None of you can leave before sunrise when the test is complete. With all of this in mind, come to the cafeteria after the 3:30 bell. You may leave now to your classes.”
The three stood up with precaution, and left the office. Each worried about the night that was coming to them, and what would happen.

Author notes

A short horror story that I've been working on for awhile. I've went and revised this one along with the second chapter, even eliminating some characters.

    That lady has evil intentions in her mind, doesn't she? The school's not allowed to keep students overnight! It's against the school policy...or something..

    Anyway, I like where you're going with this. Great work!
