Laying on the bed watching the shadows move in a design due to the light of the candle flicker, i tapped my finger on the feather stuffed pillow beneath my arm. The wrinkles in the blanket curved firmly as i stretched my legs down the ends of the bed. Between my aged fingers i twirled a silver ring, a poorly crafted ring with weak bindings barely thin enough to bite through. Suddenly a knock came to the door, startling me. "Come in." I said with my weak voice. The door creaked open as two young adults walked in the room. The young woman turned the light on as the young man said to me, "Dad your always living in the dark, its bad for your eyes." I giggled and said, "Come on in, help yourselves to a seat." My daughter and son come visiting me every now and then in this cold boring elderly home. My daughter, Gabriel, sat down in the chair near my desk and my son, Jack, leaned up against the desk getting comfortable. "So dad, were here, now tell us your story." Gabriel demanded. Jack rose an eyebrow waiting for me to begin speaking. "Ah... alright then i guess i can tell you a bit. Lets see, now... It all started back one day when i was in high school..." 1
One day, i Alex Gemini, was walking down a sidewalk headed to school for the first day. As i walked i let my eyes drift into the shadows made by the trees scattered amongst the grasslands to my left, sometimes losing balance and drifting from the sidewalk. I looked around the area noticing i was the only one around, expecting to see more kids walking to school also, but i didn't. I saw no cars, only birds in the sky and bugs along the sidewalk. It was colder then usual that day, the coldest for a long time. I finally came to the bus stop ahead and sat down on the bench placed next to it. The shadow of a tree was placed over me making it even more chilling for my skin. I watched the shadows sway from left to right on the ground in front of me, its motion mesmerized my mind and eyes. After a few minutes of sitting and watching i noticed the shadows on the ground tore in two and one became the form of a person. Frightening me i looked over my shoulder quick. It was my friend Gabriella. 2
Yes, thats where i got the name for my daughter and by the end of this story, she should be proud of her name. Gabriella looked at me as i looked deep into her eyes. It was like looking into crying crystals, another thing that could mesmerize my mind. Tears ran down her sweet red cheeks and flew away in the winds. She pushed herself onto me with a hug that smothered my body. I held her for a moment and asked, "Whats the matter?" She moved her mouth to my ear and whispered, "He did it to me... again." My grip on her tightened, she could tell i was angry. I always get angered when her father does this to her, he would treat her like she was another woman, not his daughter. He would have his way with her, into her clothes and into her. But what good is a few kids say against the police sheriff, thats what her father was, the sheriff of town. No one would ever believe us if we told. Gabriella's grip let go of me and turned me around. The bus was here for school. I hadn't even heard it drive up, my mind was so lost in her eyes i wasn't able to stop thinking about her even after she let go. We walked up the steps and onto the bus, I sat on the end of the seat far in the back of the bus as she sat next to me. She would look out the window, gazing for moments and then glance over at me for just a second to capture me again in her eyes and then back out the window. Her head was frozen and her eyes hadn't blinked once. Strands of her blond hair were sticking to her lips from the wet saliva and tears that ran down her face. I slowly wiped away her tears and traced her lips with my finger as she looked at me. She smiled for a moment and then closed her eyes, breaking the trance they put me in. It was complete silence between us the rest of the way there and seemed to last an eternity. 3
