Hato skipped to school, humming the whole way. Her blonde hair blew in the breeze and she closed her blue eyes, enjoying the feel of the wind.
All of the sudden, as Hato was skipping, she tripped over something. She landed on her backside on the hard concrete. Her bushy tail had swooshed over her shoulder and got in her face. “Oww,” Hato began to rub her cushion.
She looked up and a hand was held out to her. It was the boy that had helped her to the office the day before. He had been tying his shoe and Hato had tripped over him. His bright green eyes sparkled as he smiled down at her. “I’m sorry,” he said as he helped her to her feet. “I didn’t notice you coming or I would have moved off to the side.” Hato smiled and they began to continue to walk towards the school. “I’m Michael, by the way. Hato, right?”
“Yes. It’s nice to meet you, Michael.”
And she was very glad that he hadn’t moved off of the sidewalk and he could tell. Though she seemed happy, he could see in her eyes the loneliness she felt inside. Without another word, he took her hand they walked silently to school.
When they had arrived, Michael still holding Hato’s hand, the other kids all gasped and whispered gossip to each other. But Hato couldn’t hear them because now, she had a friend.
