It All Works Out in the End (ch.5)

~February 14, 2003~ ~Valentine’s Day~1

~In the Cafeteria Waiting for School to Start~2

I’m sitting there with Kayleen at our usual table and suddenly Justin comes over and puts his hands on the table and leans over, his eyes were wide, “Keith said yes,” he said to me.3

“Really?”4

“Yeah.”5

“You’re not just joking right?” I’d already had, Matt and Craig say Keith said yes when he really didn’t so I didn’t believe Justin either…he would definitely be one to do that.6

“No really,” he said seriously while backing away, “if he doesn’t hit me it’s a yes!” he added jokingly and ran.7

I was shaking and I couldn’t believe it. He was just kidding when suddenly Justin, standing in the middle of the cafeteria, held up his arms and shouted, “It’s a yes!” and he ran around.8

“Oh my god, Kayleen! Did he really mean it?”9

“I don’t know,” Kayleen shrugged.10

When Hanna got there I told her what happened and we walked over to Steve’s table to give him the Valentines that we had for him.11

When we reached his table he said, “Yeah, I already know about you and Keith.”12

“You mean he really meant it? Justin wasn’t just kidding?” I asked amazed.13

“No,” Steve said.14

I went all shaky and nervous again, “YES!” I said pretty loudly, which also embarrassed me a bit but made Steve’s table and Hanna laugh, “I feel like doing a victory dance! This is great!”15

I handed Steve the card I’d made him the night before and went back to my table to tell everyone the good news…I’d finally got the guy I really liked! Everyone was so happy and was like, “congratulations!” and “you guys are going to look so cute together!”16

~On the Way to Homeroom (In the Hallway)~17

So here we are, Christina, Ashley, and me, walking down the hall, Kim a few feet in front of us.18

“You should rub it in her face!” Christina said motioning to Kim.19

I laughed, it was so tempting but I knew it wasn’t right, “No, just leave her alone, she’ll find out.”20

“I’m gonna scream it down the hall,” Christina said.21

“No you won’t,” I said.22

“Yeah I will, watch,” she said and then half yelled and half talked really loudly for Kim to hear, “Amber and Keith are going out!!!!”23

I laughed and Kim pretended not to notice or care but I knew she did.24

The rest of the stuff isn’t so important. Basically everyday Keith walks me from lockers to homeroom and to classes and my bus at the end of the day. He sits at my table and is the only boy like every other day. The other days Steve sits there and sometimes Greg. 26

We’ve got an inside joke about Greg and how he sent Steve an e-mail with dancing roses saying something about how he’s really glad to be best friends and some other sappy stuff which should not be mentioned. Nothing like what you’re probably thinking, like love, but like what a boy should not say to another boy. We like to make jokes about him being gay (nothing against any of you) it’s just for fun to really piss him off and it works really good. When he sits down the boys all move over but I also think that Keith uses it as a reason to sit really close to me.27

When we first stared going out we were a little nervous and didn’t really know what to say now we’re really happy (I’m always laughing and smiling) he says that I smile a lot but so does he.28

~The Dance~ ~A Normal One~29

This dance was a normal one, which means that you didn’t have to dress up and, like usual, I wear a long sleeved shirt and jeans with my hair flipped out. Keith loves my hair that way.30

Keith was in the gym (it was open gym that night) Hanna, Kayleen, and I were sitting down in the dance room (the cafeteria) and a slow dance came on. People kept coming up and asking why I wasn’t dancing with Keith so I told him he was in the gym. Like 2 or 3 songs later Keith comes in and sits down. Inch by inch he moves closer. 31

Another slow dance comes on and people come up again asking us why we aren’t dancing, I said it was up to Keith and he stood up so I did too. I thought that maybe he did want to dance but instead he walked over to me, put his arm around me and his head on my shoulder.32

After the song he bought me a drink and the last song came on…it was a slow one.33

“Wanna dance?” I asked.34

“Sure,” he said, so we walked out onto the floor.35

I put my arms around him and he pulled me in. As we danced in the darkened room, blending into about 50 other couples, I watched the other seemingly happy couples and thought to myself, none are as happy as me.36
