Sweet Sixteen

1

"What kind of birthday cake do you want this year Hannah?", Said Beverly, Hannah's mother.2

"Hmmm... This year I want a double stack fudge ice cream cake! It is my sweet sixteen you know!", Hannah replied with a grin on her face.3

Hannah had been busy picking up her room while her mother was busy getting ideas together for Hanna's birthday party tomorrow. She was turning sweet sixteen tomorrow, a birthday she had been waiting for. She could only imagine what her parents had in store for her, and what kind of presents they got her.4

Hannah's father, Gregory, was at work. He was an insurance agent for a big local company in their town of Bramton, Delaware. It was 3:17 P.M. and her father was usually home around 5:00 P.M. Hannah looked forward to him coming home every night, but she looked forward to him coming home tonight even more, Because her birthday is tomorrow and he had the day off.5

The rest of the day was spent cleaning and preparing for Hannah's big day tomorrow. Hannah's mother had already gotten dinner ready for that night, and was now calling all of Hannah's friends, making sure they would be there tomorrow. All of them said they would, But Hannah had no idea that her friends would even be here tomorrow. 6

Hours passed, and Hannah and her mother were pacing back and forth waiting for Gregory to arrive home from work. He was never this late, and if he was, he would call and have a reason. Hannah's dad came through the front door at 7:19 P.M., with a long, sad look on his face. Hannah and her mother knew something was wrong. He walked directly into the kitchen with Beverly and Hannah following him. He sat down at the dining room table.7

"What is it?", said Beverly.8

"Well, Your mother called me at work today. Your sister is trying to put her into a nursing home, unless she can find someone else to take care of her. They say she is coming down with Alzheimer's. Well, I offered for her to stay with us, I couldn't let your mother be put in a nursing home. I have to pay for her airplane ticket, and pay the final months off on her apartment's lease. She will be here tomorrow morning at 5:30 A.M. I have to pick her up at the airport, But there is another problem. Due to the expenses of getting her here, Hannah will not be able to have a birthday party tomorrow, and we will not be able to get her anything. I am so sorry Hannah, but I can't let your grandma suffer. A nursing home is not where she belongs.", Hannah's father said.9

"Don't worry dad, It's okay. You and mom's love is enough for me, as long as grandma is well taken care of, that's the best birthday present I can have.", Hannah said.10

Hannah went up to her bedroom to get ready for bed. She was upset, but didn't tell her parents. She could not believe that her sweet sixteen was going to be ruined, after waiting years for it to happen.11

"Goodnight mom! Goodnight dad!", Hannah yelled from upstairs.12

"Goodnight sweetie!", Her mother and father said.13

Hannah had trouble falling asleep, but finally was able to. She could at least be happy that she would see her grandmother in the morning.14

The next morning Hannah heard her father start up his car outside, it was around 4:45 A.M., she knew he was on his way to get Grandma. She fell back asleep. At around 10:15 A.M., she finally woke back up. She slipped on her robe and slippers, and went downstairs to see where everyone was. She could not find her mother, father, or grandmother anywhere in the house. She thought that maybe they had left and went somewhere. She walked to the front door and opened it.15

"SURPRISE!!", Everyone shouted.16

Hannah was shocked and amused to see her friends, mother, father, and even grandmother surprise her. Everyone started to sing happy birthday as they moved back, allowing her to see a brand new car parked in the driveway, her father walked up to her and hugged her, then handed her the car keys.17

"It was all a joke Hannah! Happy birthday! It's all yours! We love you!", Her father said.18

After the party was over, Hannah slipped into drivers side door of her brand new cherry red Ford Mustang. She backed out of the driveway, and sped off into the sun. 19

This had been the best Sweet Sixteen ever, Thought Hannah.20

It was like a fairytale. 21

I liked this story but didn't like the joke. I think I would have been really mad at my parents if they did that to me. But you have a talent for writing!

Lovely story. I was beginning to wonder if you wrote just sad stories. lol Silly me. I love this one and how its suspense keeps you thinking Hannah won't get her party. Great use of that element. ^_^ Great job on the story.

Kind of a sick joke, don't you think? Pretending her grandmother has alzheimers just to suprise her with a party? If that was my parents idea of a joke, I'd be pretty upset. . .but it seems that everything worked out for them in the end, so it's all good.
