If We Were a Movie

Annie Walsh smiled and looked up at Owen.

He is so cute! she thought. ...And those blue eyes are sooo dreamy! How could any girl NOT want him???

"Annie? Annnniee?!? Hello? Is anyone in there?" Only when Annie couldn't see anything did she stop dreaming about Owen and crash back into reality, realizing he was trying to talk to her and his hand was being waved in from of her face.

"Oh? Huh? Uh...yes?" Annie said, half in a daze.

Owen laughed, and then grinned at her. Annie loved that grin. He had such white teeth, so beautiful...

"I said, Ms. Out-Of-It, that I had to go to work now and asked if you wanted to join me at the movies tonight."

"Definatel- I mean, sure. Bringing the guys?...Or Carla?" Annie said, hoping to God it wouldn’t be the latter.

"Nope. Thought we'd have some just us time. That okay?"

"Cool. Yeah meet you at Andy's at eight?"

"Of course, runt. See ya later!" And with that, Owen gracefully got up from where he was sitting on the ground under the tree with Annie, flashed her his celebrity smile, saluted her and was off to walk the two blocks to the car dealership he worked at.

Annie sat under the tree for at least five minutes before getting up, still in a heavy daze. She was always like this around him now, though it never used to be like that.

She walked to her car and sat down in the driver's seat, thinking.

Annie and Owen had been a sort of best friends ever since Annie's older brother, Art, had brought Owen over to hang out when Owen and Art had been fourteen and Annie had been twelve. They had started hanging out the week after and now they could barely ever be separated, aside from when they were at work or at night. A lot of the time they spent the night together in one of their apartments, either his or hers, both of them always making the other sleep in their bed and they themselves sleep in their living rooms.

For a while, they were only best friends. Now, whenever she saw him she got butterflies in her stomach. He was so handsome and beautiful, and she wished he would notice her more. He always acted like she was a little kid, and before that had been okay with her, but now it wasn't. Two years difference was not at all that many, and she wanted to be so much more than his best friend. She wanted him to notice her as a woman, not as his kid best friend.

She thought about him all the time now.

She was still thinking about him when she turned on her white Ford Focus and headed home.

Annie worked at home, because she was a writer, and a specialist in writing songs. A few of her lyrics had actually made it big and were sung by famous singers all around the world.

She was secretly working on a song right now. Well, working on it wasn't quite the word. She had finished it about a year ago, a little while after she had admitted to herself how much she liked him.

But she never had the courage to tell anyone about it, not that it mattered, she told herself bitterly. She hated Carla. Because she was almost all Owen ever talked about anymore. He was always talking about how beautiful Carla was or how funny and smart she was. Annie knew she was horribly jealous, but it was so hard when Annie wanted to talk to him and all he could talk about was another girl. And the worst part was how he didn't even know it hurt Annie.

The only one that she knew she liked Owen was Art. Art and Annie were really close, almost best friends themselves. Art didn't like Carla either.

When she got to her house, she walked in and fell onto her couch, still thinking. She started to sing to herself the song that she had yet to show or sing to anyone.

"Uh oh-

there you go again talking cinematic

Yeah you!

You're charming, got everybody star struck.

I know

How you always seem to go

For the obvious

instead of me

but get a ticket and you'll see-

If we were a movie

You'd be the right guy

and I'd be the best friend that you'd fall in love with.

In the end we'd be laughing

watching the sunset

fade to black,

show the names,

play the happy song...

Yeah...

Yeah, yeah,

When you call me,

I can hear it in your voice,

Oh sure!

Wanna see me, and tell me all about her.

La, La,

I'll be acting through my tears.

Guess you'll never know

that I should win,

An Oscar for this scene I'm in.

If we were a movie

you'd be the right guy

and I'd be the best friend that you'd fall in love with

and in the end we'd be laughing,

watching the sunset,

fade to black,

show the names,

play the happy song...

Wish I could tell you there's a twist

Some kind of hero in disguise,

And we're together, it's for real, now playing.

Wish I could tell you there's a kiss

Lights up the morning in my mind

I see it...Could be amazing...

If we were a movie

you'd be the right guy,

and I'd be the best friend, that you'd fall in love with

and in the end we'd be laughing,

watching the sunset,

fade to black,

show the names,

play the happy song..."

Annie jumped before she finished singing the song to herself. She looked up at the arm connected to the hand that was on her shoulder. Her brother was looking down at her.

"Annie...That was beautiful. It's the best you've done yet."

Annie could tell there was something else he was going to say. She wished she hadn't just plopped on the couch and started to sing her heart out. Art was at her apartment a lot and had his own key. He liked to cook her dinner (he was a professional chef at a local restaurant) and surprise her when she got home.

She wouldn't be so worried if the didn't know each other so well or if he didn't know how much she liked Owen.

He came over and sat next to her on the couch.

Annie looked up at her big brother, now twenty five years old.

"Ann, you need to tell him. You've got to tell him how you feel."
