Happy Father's Day 2007

“Quick! Think! Think!” Rachel pestered.

“How can I think if you’re shouting at me, huh?” Katherine snapped back.

“Here, give,” Rachel’s face screwed up in concentration.

“Once upon a time there was a pretty girl who had pretty . . . “

“Pretty . . .?” Rachel questioned.

Katherine stuck out her tongue, “Here, let me.”

“Once upon a time, there were two girls who were up late into the night working on a scientific project for their dad. This was their dad’s very first father’s day with a . . . “

“With a . . .” Katherine thought aloud.

“AHA! Gimme that paper!” Rachel cried.

“Shut up! Or dad will wake up!”

“Once upon a time, there was a very pretty girl called Rachel who had a very ugly sister named Katherine. One night, they were up late at night working on a scientific project for Father’s Day. Katherine was mad because they had waited until last minute like they always did, but this time they had no plan.

‘Why can’t you think of a good short story for Daddy?’ Rachel said.

‘Why don’t you write a story for him?’ Katherine shot back.

‘What is all this racket?’ came a voice from the stairs. ‘It is two in the morning!’

‘Happy Father’s Day!’ Katherine and Rachel cried, holding up a piece of paper with lemonade stains all over and a drawing of the family dog, Maggie.”

“Done!” Rachel grinned, looking a paper with both her handwriting and her sister’s. “It looks, ugly, though.”

“Hey!” Katherine snatched the paper from Rachel, “It’s the thought that counts!”
