A Poem for Jessie

Jessie was my Westie,
She had fur that's white.
She always came to comfort me,
when I slept at night.

I walked her up and down my street,
she always seemed to follow.
Jess had three legs and half a tail,
which made my heart feel hollow.

I loved her more than you could love
anything else on Earth!
I always knew she was my friend,
now I know what else she's worth...

Every summer, my family and I,
would ride up north to the lake.
We'd fish, and laugh, and party,
and attend a few clam bakes.

Jessie always enjoyed the ride,
didn't matter how hot it was.
Jess sure liked to get really warm,
I don't know why, just because.

One summer on our way up north,
we stopped to grab some food.
We turned the car all the way off,
not knowing there'd come no good.

Mama told me Jess would be okay,
so we let her stay in the car.
We rolled the windows all the way up,
no doors or anything were ajar.

And then I realized are stupidity,
when we came back from eating.
What good can come from all that sun
that just kept right on beating?

I opened the door, just to see,
my Jessie I adored,
but oh, my greatest, terrible mistake,
Jessie was no more.
