You Can Tell it is Spring

You can tell it is spring. All of the trees have a red haze hanging on them. It signifies growth, and warmer weather. In the spring the branches seem to sway just a little differently than they do in the winter. In the winter the branches of trees lash around violently barely contorting their brittle limbs with the breeze. In the spring the branches dance in the sky, and move with the air that brushes against them.

You can tell it is spring because the grass is getting greener. The grass goes from wilted brown covering, to vibrant, lush green blades. It is the kind of grass that you just want to kick off your shoes and walk around bare foot in. the kind of spring grass that makes you want to lay down and look at the clouds. It is that type that you want to plant in your house instead of a carpet. It is the type that you can’t wait to mow, and it is the type that smells amazing after you cut it.

You can tell it is spring because the windows are all open in the house. They are letting in the warm breezes and sweet smells of new flowers. The curtains swing about their rod. The cat pounces onto the sill of the open window. He will stay there all day watching the spring day outside. The old dog lays by the open sliding door and soaks up the warm spring sun in his thick black fur coat. In through the windows purrs sounds of people walking bye, children playing, and birds chirping.

You can tell it is spring because the birds are chirping when you wake up. In the winter you wake up to a dark, cold, silent morning. In the spring you wake up to a bright sunny morning with birds singing their songs. You can hear birds echoing other birds, and some birds singing to themselves.

You can tell its spring because you can hear the loud thunders of motorcycles passing bye. The rumbles can be heard throughout the block. The exhilarating sound of the motor perched between the two wheels is enthralling. The easy going atmosphere they carry about them screams spring.

You can tell it is spring when the flies are out. In the winter flies lie dormant and don’t buzz around. In the spring flies roam rapidly through the air. They zoom in and out of rooms, and all around cars. Flies accumulate on the grill of the car in the spring.

You can tell it is spring because yard work needs to be done. The grass needs mowing, the garden needs weeding, and the flowers need to be planted. On the weekend everyone on the street can be seen outside mending their gardens and grooming their lawns. Soil is turned up to prepare a garden, and flowers are picked to make a bouquet.

You can tell it is spring when the wardrobes change. The click clack sounds of flip flops roam the halls. White arms and legs stick out of short sleeves and shorts. The sweatshirts from winter are pilled into the back of the closet and all of the skirts, shorts and t-shirts come forward. Long jeans are stored away in unused drawers and make room for new springtime clothes.

I am positive it is spring when I see; trees blooming, the grass turning green, the windows open, the birds singing, the sounds of motorcycles going bye, buzzing flies, people tending to their lawns, changes in cloths, and when I am all sweaty and my feet are black from running outside barefoot enjoying the change of season.

    A great read!

Why trees sway differently in the spring. Never thought of that before!

“…It is the type that you can’t wait to mow (Well, I don’t know about that),…”

Words that bring back vivid memories.

    Very well written.

    A great read.

I loved the careful imagery you put into this poem, it really allows the reader to visualise what happens when it is spring. The title is direct and conveys the purpose of your poem clearly. Good job, continue to write!
