A Scream In The Night (Act One, Scene III)

Scene III1

(The next scene is back at the alleyway. It's daytime this time and the birds can be heard in the background. AIYA is passing from R, walking slowly as she comes to the spot where DYNASTY was killed. She wears a black skirt and a cream colored blouse, hair done up in a french braid. She sits down on the bloodstained spot and closes her eyes a moment before lifting her head and looking up. DYNASTY stands there now. She is wearing a white dress and she is illuminated by a spotlight. The lights are dimmed here, a low one on AIYA as DYNASTY speaks to her)2

DYNASTY: You blame yourself, don't you. 3

AIYA: Dynasty? (To herself) Am I dreaming?4

DYNASTY: In the flesh...well, Not really, but (she laughs a little) You get what I mean.5

AIYA: Don't JOKE about it!6

DYNASTY: When you're dead, you can tell me not to joke about it. But until that day, which won't be for a very long time, you keep your commands to yourself. You have to have a sense of humor.7

AIYA: Heh..I suppose so.8

DYNASTY: I know so, Aiya. Don't blame yourself. I don't you to run. I gave my life up for you because I love you. You're my best friend and even remain so now, though I'm gone. You don't think I see you and what you do every day. But I do see. I see you work endlessly trying to find my killer. I see you endlessly tiring yourself out every day and you still find time to come pay respects to me every day.9

AIYA: Are you really here? Or...10

DYNASTY: It depends on your definition of "Really Here", Aiya. I'm always here, in your heart. (She kneels in front of her and lays a hand on her heart) Even if you can't see or feel me, Which, May I say, you should let yourself more often.  I've sent you many signals I was near but you were always too busy to notice. Look. Take it from a dead girl. Live your life. Stop endlessly working yourself to death, no pun intended, and move on. I can't until you do.11

AIYA: (She blinks at the realization and pauses before sighing) I know...I'm sorry...I'm so sorry, Dyn. (She gives a sniffle and wipes her eyes as tears trickle down) I can't stand thinking that it should have been me that he killed. Not you.12

DYNASTY: Aiya, you had everything going for you. The guy, The grades, the family and the future. I didn't have that, A. My life was falling apart in front of my own eyes. Mom was an alcoholic, Dad split. I was lucky to get a D- in classes. I was going nowhere. I knew you had to be the one to live---don't you see?13

AIYA: I don't. And I won't stop until you're brought to justice. I promised myself, AND you.14

DYNASTY: Not all promises are meant to be kept, A.15

AIYA: I always keep my promises. You've known that since we were little.16

DYNASTY: (With a sigh) Yes. You're a stubborn son of a dandelion, that's for sure.17

AIYA: Damn straight.18

DYNASTY: (Laughing softly) And still so sure of yourself.19

AIYA: Not always. You know, your life wasn't that bad. You should try living in my shoes. Having to deal with all the stress of everything, and the death of your best friend. One you'd known since you were in first grade. I still remember the first time we met. I was being bullied. And you came to the rescue. Friends ever since.20

DYNASTY: You weren't always sure of yourself, but you have been since at least the 5th grade. You never let anything or anyone stop you once you got it in your head what you were doing is right. Still don't.21

AIYA: (nodding) That is true.22

DYNASTY: Please, A. Stop worrying about it. You're going to make yourself sick. I don't really feel like having you to come visit ME for a long long time, you know.23

AIYA: I'm serious, Dyn. Don't joke.24

DYNASTY: I'm BEING Serious. I don't want it to happen.25

AIYA: (Closing her eyes) Don't make me break a promise.26

DYNASTY: Don't make me make you promise to stop.27

AIYA: I won't make that promise.28

DYNASTY: I know, but it was worth a shot.29

AIYA: Dyn. I wish you didn't leave me.30

DYNASTY: I never left. I've always been here. I'll never stop being here. you just have to listen more often for me. I'll always let you know when I'm near you--I promise.31

AIYA: Sometimes I feel as though I'm in a bad dream that I just can't wake up from. It's like those dreams where your legs are stuck to the floor and something's coming towards you and you just can't move to save yourself.32

DYNASTY: I've had those dreams. They're terrible. I used to wake up in a cold sweat. But, Aiya, It isn't a dream doll. It's true life and if you keep going like you are, you're going to be the one in white soon.33

AIYA: I hate white.34

DYNASTY: My point exactly.35

AIYA: You've always been the sarcastic one. You find everything funny. I'm just boring ol' me.36

DYNASTY: You may be a lot of things--But boring isn't one of them.37

AIYA: You flatter me, you know.38

DYNASTY: I speak nothing but the truth. But, A, I have to go. Someone is coming. (Footsteps are heard) Remember. I'm always with you, just listen. And believe. (She walks off L)39

(Here is where BROWN enters. He's in his uniform and is wearing sunglasses. There should be a light shining to his left, looking like the sun. AIYA doesn't notice him, she is too busy staring at the spot where DYNASTY had stood moments before. She wipes away her tears, sighs, and closes her eyes.)40

BROWN: Well. We meet again, Miss Green.41

AIYA: (She looks up, surprised) What are you doing here?42

BROWN: Come to talk to you about that night. I've been watching you, Green. You come here every day at this time.43

AIYA: Oh. So you can now add Stalker to your list of illegal talents, Sheriff?44

BROWN: It's not the time for jokes, Aiya. You're lucky I'm a patient man.45

AIYA: Patient my pretty butt.46

BROWN: Don't sass me, Girl. I don't have a very high tolerance for attitude.47

AIYA: Then you just messed with the wrong girl, BROWN.48

BROWN: On the contrary. I messed with my son's fiance. It just gives me more room to play. You know, I could ruin you. My son would believe anything I told him. you've only known him a short amount of time, Missy. I've known him since he was born. Who do you think he'd believe?49

AIYA: Oh, I don't know. Maybe the one who isn't a scum sucking murderer?50

BROWN: I warned you, girl. (He raises his hand and goes to strike her. She grabs his arm tightly)51

AIYA: I'm warning you...Don't try anything. I'm not a wimpy girl like I was 10 months ago.52

BROWN: We'll see about that. (He lifts his other hand up, punching her in the gut. She groans in pain and falls backwards. BROWN comes at her with a knife he had pulled out when she fell and she rolls over. He misses her. They continue to struggle for a few moments before he tries to get her with the knife again. She twists and puts the knife through him instead. He falls and she looks down at him.)53

AIYA: I said everything was going to be all right. I keep my word...Another promise I consider kept. (She turns and leaves the alley, her shoes clicking as she goes, fists clenched. The lights dim and then fade to black, leaving the dead Sheriff on the ground.)
