A Scream In The Night (Act One, Scene II)

SCENE II 1

(The next scene opens up in a police station. There are a few desks with computers, all unoccupied except for two. DEPUTY and JONATHAN BROWN are sitting at their desks working [The DEPUTY can either be male or female]. AIYA walks in with BEN her fiance from UR. They are talking softly until interrupted by BROWN) 2

BROWN: Ben! What a suprise. Who do you have here? 3

BEN: This is Aiya, my Fiance. I told you we would be coming by today, right? 4

BROWN: Yes...Yes, of course. Now I remember. Forgive me? (He looks to AIYA and 5

blinks a little. She seems slightly familiar to him) Now, young lady, Have I seen you before? 6

AIYA: I don't believe so, Mr. Brown. (She smiles warmly at him, though in the back of her mind she feels oddly tense and she shies away towards BEN just a little) 7

DEPUTY: Well hello there, Ben. Miss Green, I presume? Ben doesn't stop talking about you, young miss. You've caught his attention good. 8

AIYA: (Feeling slightly embarrassed) Why, That's a good thing...I...Think. (Looks up at BEN with a smile) 9

BEN: A very good thing...(Several moments of silence pass as they all stand looking slightly awkward.) 10

BROWN: What, she doesn't speak much, Ben? 11

AIYA: You must forgive me, Mr. Brown. I've not been so cheery for a long time and if I'm being poor company, please excuse. I've not been the same since my friend's murder a little less than a year ago. 12

BROWN: (Apprehensively) Murder? 13

AIYA: Yes, Murder. She was killed saving my life. 14

BEN: Dad, we really shouldn't talk about it. Aiya, I'll get us some breakfast. Care to come, Deputy? (With a nod, the both leave going DL) 15

BROWN: (Relieved) Very good. How are you, Miss Green? 16

AIYA: I'm doing about as well as can be expected, Mr. Brown. (She smiles a little bit) And yourself? 17

BROWN: (Attempting to keep his cool) I. Uh. Am fine, Thank you. 18

AIYA: Good to hear. (She pauses) I noticed you got a little nervous when I spoke of Dynasty. 19

BROWN: (To himself) So that was her name. 20

AIYA: Excuse? 21

BROWN: N-nothing, Miss. 22

AIYA: Hmm...All right then. If you say so. 23

BROWN: I Do. (Nodding his head) 24

AIYA: I'm surprised you didn't know of the murder. There's not many murders in this town and I'm pretty sure this station dealt with it. 25

BROWN: Well...Um..Uh.. (Loosing his cool, he raises a hand and scratches the back of his neck) 26

AIYA: (Raises an eyebrow as familiarity washes over her at the raised hand, eyes widening as if having a flashback. Here, You can hear Dynasty's voice screaming "AIYA! GO NOW!!!" and a panicked AIYA screaming "NOT WITHOUT YOU DYN!", almost an echo from the past) It's...you..(Loud whisper) You did it. 27

BROWN: Did what, Miss? 28

AIYA: Don't play dumb...You killed her...You.. 29

BROWN: I assure you, I...(AIYA interrupts as he gets up walking towards her) 30

AIYA: Don't you come near me...you...BASTARD! (Ben comes running out at the screaming, BROWN Moves back into his seat) 31

BEN: Is everything all right? 32

AIYA: No..But..It's going to be. (Casting a glance at BROWN. Here the scene ends. BEN should be looking confused at his father and fiance. BROWN has a worried expression on his face as the scene fades to black) 33
