Fort Liard

If I'm not home in my own back yard1

I'm roaming with the buffalo in Fort Laird2

Really, Fort Liard is just inside the North West Territories and you can see the sign as you drive out of British Columbia. On a map you can see the border line between B.C. and the North West Territories. There is a two and one half  hour stretch of dirt road after you leave the main highway on a right turn just outside Fort Nelson B.C. You will be in the bush very deeply and it could feel spooky for a city dweller. This is the last frontier and is very close to Alaska. In fact, you have to take the Alaska highway long before you get there. The Alaska highway begins before you even leave British Columbia. Fort Liard has buffalo in the streets. It has a river and the native people make baskets and mucklucks and jewellery etc. They also teach these arts. There is one main general store and a Northern store and water is delivered to the homes every wednesday. People like to fish and go into Fort Nelson to shop.3

Author notes

Happy to share this knowledge with you since I drove all that way from Vernon B.C. when the pumpkins were ripe. And so, I drove from summer to winter in a day in December.

Canada's a pretty cool place (and I do mean it both ways). Very educational entry here, and the rhyme to introduce it was nicely done. Good luck in the contest.

Your experience was nicely shared in this piece. You seem very educated, and your liking for the outdoors is also a great addition. Very nice.

This is a very interesting write. It sounded a little bit stiff to me, more like an entry into an encyclopedia, and that wasn't quite what I had in mind for this category. However, I do think this was well written in the format it's in, and I do like it. It was very easy to understand, and I loved the imagery here of the drive through the bush area, and especially of the native people's activities. One thing I'd mention is that you spelled Fort Liard differently the first time you mentioned it here than how it was spelled during the rest of this piece, but I'm sure it was just a typo. Also, the ending felt kind of abrupt to me. Perhaps another sentence or so to round off the write would make it feel more complete. Thanks for entering my contest, I enjoyed reading this. As an afterthought, did you mean there were real buffalo just randomly in the streets there? I thought that was funny...
    Good luck!
