Chapter 2

So I cleaned and cleaned and cleaned in order to go. It was supposed to be so much fun. I went to my best friend’s party. Her name is Eliza. She was having a birthday party and was inviting all her friends, just to hang out at her house. It was going to be fun because Jerrod, Trey, and Sean were going to be there. Chantelle, Allison, and Shannon were also there. We got an unsurprising visit from Natalie, but she left soon. Thank goodness.

Natalie is basically a slightly overweight girl at our school, who no one actually really likes, but she’s easy. A couple of guys have messed with her, and it is befuddling every time we hear about it, because the fact that they did something with someone was absolutely mind-boggling, but to know they did it with her was just plain disgusting. It threw my whole thinking process off balance knowing she was the one they chose to do the dirty with. Men… as long as they’re happy, they don’t care who serves it.

I found myself looking forward to each moment, however, because I would be able to spend time with Sean. He was everything my mind told me I wanted. We started, Eliza, Chantelle, Trey and I. Then Allison and Shannon showed up. Soon following came Jerrod and then Sean. The party began. Food, food fights, music, snowballs, everything was flying. It was towards the beginning of April, however, the weather was weird and it had snowed the day before. The sun made it just warm enough to go outside in a t-shirt and be able to still enjoy the weather.

I sat so very close to Sean, and he kept his arm wrapped around me. Every now and then I’d get up, only to know when I sat back down, his arm would be around me again, or his fingers laced with mine. It was so much fun running around and just being obnoxious with no parental supervision. But it made the whole thought of being able to do something bad, that less desirable because there wasn’t anyone who could catch us in the act to make it even the slightest bit risky.

Too bad we didn’t take the slight risk of being caught by our very own peers. Either it’d make them jealous, or straight up disgusted. Either way, it still made me giggle.

The events of the day turned through my head, the time rolled off in my mind, it was absolutely amazing how everything just seemed to twist and turn and change. All I knew was that the time they were here, was amazing. And when they left, we still had fun. We ate cupcakes, made inside jokes, played word games, and sang along to songs. We talked about love, life, relationships, and high school. It was just like any other sleep over. I was having a great time, until it showed up.

A look of sheer terror flooded my face as I looked out Eliza’s foggy windows. I became icy inside and out, as I witnessed the little girl, just standing there like she was blending in with the nightly shadows and no one could see her. Yet, she stood there glinting at me with deep red eyes. She had long brown hair, similar to mine, but it wrapped around her delicate shoulders, which were covered by a long white robe. I could see through her pale face as if she were a cloud resting upon the earth’s surface, taking the figure of a mere child.

She just sat there looking up at me. She stood in front of my car, and she just glinted up at me. She held her arms, shivered, then glared up at me from the top of her eyes. She started to walk, and she faded in and out, first really bright, then gone, then dull, then really bright again. This horrifying spectacle was going to haunt me forever… just like the rest of the sullen figures and random appearances.

However, if I were to think about it in all actuality, I’d think that I was just seeing things. That it was just my imagination. I ate one too many Smarties and the sugar high got to me. But I knew better than that. I actually saw her.

I stayed in my sleeping supplies I brought for the little sleep over. I didn’t come out for quite some time. I kept the blankets pulled to my chin, the bottoms wrapped under me feet, tight against my toes. I kept the pillows pushed down with my head, the blankets pulled tight with my fingers, and blankets beneath me still, unsure of any move I could have made to awaken the ghost’s thoughts.

I peered back out the window, and she had disappeared. I searched the premises for any signs of her existence, somewhere in the grass, in the dew of the plants, in the flowers from spring growing through the snow. Nothing. Absolutely nothing was to be found, no existence of her, no footsteps, not robe, no hair shedding, just snow, grass, and the ground. Her pale body had elapsed over the period of time I stayed hidden, and she didn’t resurface for as long as I can remember.

Either I was just seeing things, my mind was playing tricks on me, or I was insane. It definitely could be all three, but I wasn’t going to worry about figuring out the ways of my sanity at the moment.

Instead, I left the room and took my cell phone. I needed so badly to talk to Sean.

“Hello?” I heard a sleepy voice answer.

“Sean?” I wasn’t sure if he answered.

“No, this is Jerrod.” I wasn’t sure why Jerrod was at Sean’s house. Jerrod didn’t normally hang out with Sean.

“What are you doing there?” I was too nosy at times.

“I didn’t have any where else to go yesterday, so I came and crashed over here. What do you need? Sean is sleeping. Anything I can help with?” He said in that same sleepy voice.

“Well, I’m not sure if you’ll believe me, but I think I just saw a ghost, and I’m just really scared at the moment…” I was shaking a little bit, and I was attempting to stay quiet so the girls in the other room wouldn’t awake to me talking.

“Are you alright? Did anything hurt you?” He sounded a bit more awake, after he coughed a little bit.

“Yea, I’m alright. Nothing hurt me, I’m just scared is all, and I figured if I talked to Sean he’d help me calm down.”

“Well, I’m really sorry but the boy is sleeping. He crashed early tonight. He was pretty whooped. If you want, I can stay on the phone and attempt to comfort you? I’m not Sean but I’m sure I’m not that bad of a substitute.”

I laughed a little. In such a serious note of a conversation, he still managed to make me laugh.

“That’s cute.” He said with a grin.

“What is?” I asked.

“Your giggle. Sean is right, you have a very cute giggle.”

I let a quieter giggle escape; I couldn’t help it when people said something like that to me. He just laughed. “So why aren’t you just talking to one of the girls there?” He asked. Of course he’d want me to talk to the girls, typical guy. He didn’t want to hear about my little problems, but oh well, he’d endure it anyway as long as I had something to say.

“Well, they’re all sleeping, and I thought Sean would still be awake. But, apparently he’s not. And you weren’t either, you just answered the phone.”

“Yea, I couldn’t sleep well anyway. I needed something to take my mind off attempting to sleep, so I guess I should thank you.”

“Well, no need for that because I should thank you for sidetracking my mind as well.”

“Then I guess we’re even right?” He asked with a little laugh.

“Yea. I guess so.”

“What did you do to Sean?” He sounded all serious.

“What do you mean ‘What did I do to Sean?’” I asked.

He laughed. “I mean, what did you guys do? As soon as we got back to his house after the party, he was absolutely worn out. He didn’t want to get up, eat, play the PS2 or anything! He just sat there, staring off into space with a little smile on his face and he wouldn’t answer anyone.”

“I don’t know, I didn’t do anything to him! We didn’t do anything at her party, I kissed him a couple times but that was it. He was tired?” I could tell Jerrod was just messing with me.

“Yea, he was pretty tired. He didn’t want to do anything. He just kept sitting there thinking. We’d say something about you and he’d look up to acknowledge us, find out what we said, then go about his ways with thinking again.”

That made me laugh. He must have been pretty sidetracked to only acknowledge them when they said my name. I loved how when he got to thinking, he didn’t stop until his thoughts were straight.

“I miss him.”

“Yea, I think he misses you too. Want me to wake him up for you?” He asked. I wondered why he hadn’t offered that before. But it was probably because he was too tired to think clearly.

“No. You should probably let him sleep. He must be really tired then.”

I heard some muffled sounds in the background.

“Alex, hold on a second.” Jerrod said. He covered the phone and I heard him talking to someone. It sounded as if he were asking Sean if he was awake enough to talk to me.

“Alex!?!” I heard a tired voice say. “Give me the phone then.”

I heard a quiet pause, then “Alex? Baby? What’s wrong?” It was Sean.

“Hey Sean. Nothing is wrong. I just wanted to talk to someone. But you were sleeping and Jerrod answered the phone.” He probably didn’t understand anything I was saying because he was too tired.

“Then why are you calling so late, baby? Are you sure everything is alright?” It was so cute how concerned he was.

“Yes, I’m sure. I thought I saw a ghost earlier, and I was going to tell you about it, but Jerrod helped sidetrack my mind so I wouldn’t be freaking out about it. I didn’t want to wake you because he said you were really tired today, you didn’t want to do anything. You just sat there when you got home.”

“I sat there, staring at the floor most of the time. I was thinking about you, and how much fun we had today.” He let out a small sigh of relief. He was so cute.

“Sean?”

“Yes Alex?”

I was quiet for a little while.

“Alex? Are you alright?”

“Yes, Sean, yes. I was just debating how I would tell you.”

“Tell me what? Alex what’s on your mind?”

I just giggled that little shy girl’s giggle he loves so much. “Don’t fret honey. I was just debating how to tell you I love you.” I said with a little giggle. “I love you, Sean. You make me so happy in the smallest ways. I love it when you worry, it’s so cute.” I just laughed quietly and I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

“Is your phone alright? You keep cutting out every now and then…”

“Yea, it’s just being stupid. The reception in this town, goodness.”

“What do you mean in this town? Service at your house works just fine.”

He let out a little giggle. “Go downstairs and go out the front door, but be quiet, and sneak out into the yard.”

“Why!?” I was so confused. But I did it anyway.

“Just do it!” He said while laughing.

“I am! Now what do I do?” I asked as I reached my destination.

“Close your eyes.”

“My eyes are closed, but this is weird, it’s cold and dark and you know I’m afraid of the…” I opened my eyes and Sean was kissing me, therefore blocking off the rest of my sentence. I took the phone away from my ear, closed it and kissed him back.

“Hi baby.” He said looking down at me with those robin’s egg blue eyes, smiling at me. I just nuzzled my head up under his chin and cuddled close to him for warmth. He held me so tight, beneath the midnight, moonlit night. Sure it wasn’t warm, but it was still what I had always wanted. To be held by him.

“Hi Sean” I looked up at him, smiled and kissed him lovingly on the lips. “I love you.” I said with a big grin.

“I love you too Alex.” He grinned at me, pulled me close, wrapped his sweater around me and zipped it up so I was in his clothes, and kissed me again. Then he just held me and rocked back and forth.

It was absolutely amazing, and yet strange how he managed to do the cutest things at the most horrible times. It was the middle of the night, extremely cold due to the weird weather we were having in April, and I was in my pajamas. But it was so cute, how he worried so much about little things that happened to me, so he did the most spontaneous things to keep me happy. His spontaneity helped clear my mind. However, it still didn’t make me forget her.
