Interlude - Chapter One (A Dark-Hunter Inspired Story)

Yes *gasp!* I wrote a 'fiction inspired by' (I hate the term fan fiction).  *sigh*
With my posting this, I’m assuming that you already know of the Dark-Hunter world created by Sherrilyn Kenyon. If not, then check out
Dark-Hunter.com, and then come back…. Or…. Better yet, open that site in another window, and read this at the same time :D
Yes, yes, yes… I took HUGE allowances with the world, and may have altered a few things (maybe). This fiction is based on the knowledge gained from both the web site, and the books in the series that I have read to date. Some characters are Dark-Hunter regulars Like: Ash, Artemis, Savitar, and Stryker, while others are my creation.
So, this is my disclaimer that this(Dark-Hunter and it’s characters) is so not my creation, and just the general idea of this story is mine, along with the characters that I created.

“There’s someone very important here tonight,” the DJ at the ‘Bar None’ nightclub announced.

Ava Delen stopped what she was doing and glanced around. Her friends were looking from table to table for a famous person.

“Wonder who it is?” Kari Shyler asked.

“No idea,” Ava said as she picked up her drink, happy that something was able to take her mind off of her own ‘birthday woes’.

The DJ continued to talk. “This lady is very special in every way, and happens to be celebrating her thirty-seventh birthday.”

Ava suddenly had a horrible sinking feeling.

“Ava,” the announcer said as the light fell on her table and she tried her best not to crawl under it and slink away. “This song’s for you.”

The others at the table erupted in cheers as Lee Aarons’ ‘Some Girls Do’ blasted from the club’s speakers. Unable to keep the blush from her face, Ava suddenly burst out laughing, then raised her arms to the ceiling with a loud “whooooooooo!”.

“You’re all dead, you know?” she asked her friends.

“Oh, we know,” Kari said. “But…it was worth it!”

~~~~~~~~~
Stone Mikels smiled slightly from the other side of the club, then went back to surveying the crowd. Birthdays didn’t have much appeal to him since his last official one, and he fleetingly wondered how large a cake for him would be to be able to hold three hundred-ninety four candles. He shuddered at the thought, but knew that Acheron’s friend Simi would be in absolute heaven with a cake that large.
He tensed as he saw a young, good looking blonde man approach the ‘birthday girl’ and ask her to dance. He didn’t relax as the woman refused with a smile, and the man gave her a strange look before walking away.
~~~~~~~~

Ava sighed as the man left, then turned to the other three at her table. “See?” she said. “Announce a birthday, and it brings the creepies out of the woodwork.”

“He was gorgeous!” May Lee exclaimed as she pulled the elastic out of her long black hair and let it fall over her shoulders. “If you’re not going to claim him, then I am!”

“May,” Ava said in a warning tone. “I told him no because he creeped me out… and my ‘creep-o-meter’ is never wrong.”

“You married Peter,” May reminded her.

“That’s different,” Ava said. “He was a jackass, not a creep.”

“Creep, jackass, whatever,” May said as she adjusted her chest into an impossibly bigger cleavage. “I don’t plan on keepin’ him. I just wanna ride him until he begs for mercy.”

Ava sat back in defeat as her friend glided away from the table. She watched as May approached the blond man and started talking. The man glanced at their table, then back at May, his eyes never quite making it past her neck as they talked.

May grabbed the man’s hand and dragged him to the dance floor as ‘Ass Shaker’ by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus started, and did an excellent job of acting out the song title.

Ava had to give the man credit; he looked like a scrumptious one-night stand, but as he and May rubbed against each other, she noticed that he couldn’t dance to save his life. “Anyway,” Ava said as she tore her gaze away. “Since the embarrassment part is over, what else do you have in store for me?”

Both Kari and Michelle Bourne had the nerve to look innocent…which made Ava more than a little nervous.

“Work tomorrow?” Michelle asked instead.

“Finished yesterday morning.” As a junior high school teacher, she didn’t have to return until a week before school started in the fall. “Off for two glorious months,” Ava replied warily as too many scenarios ran though her mind, ranging from them getting her pissed and then putting her on a train to Boston, to her waking up hung over and buck naked in the city’s park. “Why?”

“When are the kids coming back?”

“Two months,” Ava said. Her son and daughter, ages ten and nine, were spending the summer at their grandparents. She may have hated her ex-husband, but his parents were great.

“All right then,” Kari said. “Here’s the plan. You, me, Michelle, and… well… if May doesn’t spend all night riding her young stud there… which is actually a moot point, since he’s all over her.” She sighed as she revised the plan in her mind. “We three are going to spend the night club hopping until dawn, then a champagne breakfast on White Rock beach at sunrise, followed by skinny dipping!”

Ava sighed and looked up in time to see May wave a goodbye to them as she walked off the dance floor with her newest conquest. The man had a hand under her shirt, feeling her chest and gave Ava a superior look as they passed.

Ava’s creep-o-meter shrilled at her.

~~~~~~~~~
Stone made his way through the crowd, walking in the general direction of one of the exits, his eyes never leaving the blond man and the woman with him. People moved out of Stone’s way, his size and clothes making most give him a wide berth. At six foot three, wearing dark sunglasses, and dressed like the Terminator, he made an imposing figure.
“Now there’s a mountain I’d live to climb,” Michelle said as Stone passed the table. She sighed in appreciation at his perfect face, stylish brown hair and sculpted body.
Ava craned her neck to quickly check him out. “Absolutely perfect,” she said. “But… a tad too pretty.”
“You’re picky,” Kari said as she grabbed her beer.
“Nope,” Ava said. “One does not one-night stand a man like that,” she pointed out. “Either plan on keepin’ him, or don’t bother.” She watched as the man walked out of the bar. “So,” she said casually. “Any other bars you want to embarrass me in?”
“Plenty.” Michelle stood as she finished her drink. “The Automotive is one shortcut through the alley away!”
~~~~~~~

Stone made it outside and looked around. He could sense the Daimon close, and followed quickly, rounding a corner in time to see a scared woman being confronted by four blonde men.

“Four against one,” he said. “How noble of you.”

The Daimons turned with a sneer, stopping when they saw the size of their confronter. “Dark Hunter,” one said as a warning to the others.

Stone looked at the woman. “Nice and easy,” he said in a soothing voice. “Walk past them.” He remained stoic as the woman looked too scared to move. “Now, please.” He moved slightly as he sensed people coming up behind him.

“May?” a female asked in a calm voice. “Listen to the man, hon. Come here.”

Stone glanced as the birthday gal and her two friends slowly walked and stood beside him. “Go home,” he whispered.

“Piss off,” Ava whispered back. “That’s my friend and I am not leaving until she’s safe.” Ava looked at May. “Come on.” She hissed as one of the blond men pulled May closer to him. “I don’t know what you’re planning on doing, sir, but I would suggest that it not include my friend.”

“Enough of this,” the blond who took May from the club said. “Take care of them and I’ll take care of this one.” He moved towards her neck.

Stone immediately reacted by running at the group, stabbing at one as he tried to stop him. The blonde dissolved into a cloud of sparkly dust, bringing a scream to Michelle’s lips.

“Oh, shit,” Ava said as one man made it towards her. How could a happy night out celebrating and a shortcut through a well-lit alley turn deadly?  Michelle screamed again in terror and turned to run, banging in to Kari and sending them both to the ground.

Ava spun as the man made it close enough, and sent him back with a kick to the chest. She heard a muffled moan and caught a glimpse of silver powder in the air, followed by footsteps running away. The blond who had attacked her jumped at Ava again.

She moved, grabbed his arm and helped his jump by turning and slamming him into the wall behind her. He rebounded off it and fell to the ground. Before anyone else could move, Stone strode up, twisted a lethal looking knife in his hand and plunged it straight into the mans’ chest.

Michelle screamed again as the person vanished, and kept screaming as Stone looked at her. “Would you please stop that?” he asked.

Michelle immediately stopped screaming, climbed to her feet and ran to May, who looked more than terrified. Ava helped Kari to her feet, her gaze never leaving the tall man.

“Ladies,” Stone said with a polite nod before turning and strolling away from their shocked faces.

“Mass hallucination,” Kari whispered. “Gotta be. Someone slipped something into our drinks…”

“Let’s go with that,” Ava said slowly. “And let’s get the hell out of here.”

~~~~~~~
Stone Mikels peeked around the corner as the four women made their way out of the alley, and breathed a sigh of relief. Tonight could have ended badly for them had he not been there, since the others ended up in the same place and would have been a nice snack for the Daimons.
Although, he doubted that the birthday girl would have made it easy for them. He sighed in appreciation at the way she handled herself while her friends froze and screamed around her. But, eventually, she would have been overpowered by the Daimons and her soul stolen.
No one deserved to die on their birthday. It would seriously suck, as he could attest to, having first class knowledge of that event.
~~~~~~~~~

They turned every light on in the house, and stood in the living room while Ava grabbed a case of beer from the fridge, piled a few bags of chips and other assorted snacks on top and joined them.

May grabbed a bag, tore it open and immediately started to shove the chips into her mouth.

Kari watched her warily. “Slow down, or you’re going to puke.”

“I plan on,” May said as she chewed. “I plan on pigging out, drinking until I puke, then waking up to find that all of my imagination.”

“I’m with you on that,” Michelle said as she grabbed a box of snack crackers and opened them.

Ava sighed as she opened a beer and took a long drink. “Well, this sucks monkey nuts.” The other three looked at her. “I hate it when some snot assed punks ruin a good time.” She walked to the computer on the desk in the corner and logged on to the internet.

“What are you doing?” Kari asked as she grabbed a handful of chips.

“People who dissolve into powder after being stabbed,” Ava said as she typed the words into a search engine. “Wow… baby powder porn, snorting powder porn, ewww… stabbed porn… ah, here we go.” She fell silent as she read.

“What?” Michelle said as Ava’s expression grew serious.

“Nothing.”

“Don’t nothing me, lady,” Michelle said. “You got that ‘Peter is acting like a fuck again and I’m going to tear him a new ass’ look on your face.”

Ava sighed as she read straight from the screen. “From some book, role playing game site, dark-hunter.com….Daimon: An Apollite who refuses to docilely die over a curse s/he had no part in creating. They feed on human souls and fight the Dark-Hunters…. Uh…. Apollite: A member of a race cursed by the god Apollo. They cannot be out in daylight and they must live on the blood of each other. At age 27, they die a slow and painful death unless they decide to turn Daimon and prey on human souls.” Ava rubbed her eyes, then continued. “Dark-Hunter: An ancient warrior who sold his/her soul to the Greek goddess Artemis for a single act of vengeance. Now they protect mankind from the Daimons who want to claim our souls.[1]

She turned the computer screen off with an annoyed sigh. “More likely four Goth or Satanic wannabes… no.. five wannabes who spend far too much time on that site, and were playing some reality game complete with magicians powders and smudge pots.”

Kari looked at the others. “Sounds reasonable.”

“What if they were real?” May said as she slowed down her eating.

“Highly unlikely,” Ava said. “I don’t think they were out for anything more than to scare the shit out of you.”

“Pricks.”

“Absolutely.” Ava looked at the clock on the wall. “We still on for the skinny-dipping at sunrise?”

“Are you insane!”

She looked at Kari. “I learned a long time ago to never let the bully assume that he’s won.” She faced May. “You feel up to it?”

“Only if I can puke in your car.”

“We’re taking your car.”

~~~~~~~~~~
Stone Mikels shut the door behind him, the automatic locks sealing his house up tighter than a prison. He took his long black jacket off and headed for the kitchen for a bedtime snack. He looked through the tinted window, trying to find some peace with the view of the waves crashing on White Rock beach just feet from his home.
Unlike most Dark Hunters, he preferred open space, and had used a lot of his monthly ‘pay’ to darken the windows so that no sunlight could get in, and he could actually watch people on the beach during the day.
Stone took a plate of spaghetti out of the fridge and put it in the microwave, then checked his computer messages. His squire, or assistant, had e-mailed that his flight was delayed and he should be back from Hawaii by late afternoon. He also thanked Stone once again for the university graduation gift of two weeks off on an all expenses paid Hawaii vacation.
He had just turned on the stereo when he sensed people approaching. It was not unusual for joggers to be out, but this seemed a little too early even for them. He walked to his window and looked, stopping when he realized that the people were the four women from earlier.
Suspicion immediately crossed his mind, thinking that they had somehow followed him home from Vancouver. He watched as they made their way over the property wall to his house, and moved away from the window as the one who had been celebrating her birthday stuck something to his patio window. He was suddenly relieved that he hadn’t turned on the exterior alarm yet. He knew she couldn’t see him through the windows, but the coincidence of them being here made him wonder.
He watched as she left, then he went to the window again, reading the note that she had left.
Dear House occupant:
I hope you don’t mind, but my friends and I would like to borrow your beachfront to do a little skinny-dipping for my birthday. Apologies in advance for any damage we may do.
Stone read the letter again, his groin involuntarily jerked at the mention of skinny-dipping. He contemplated watching them, since they were on his property, and wondered what would happen if he opened the patio door right now. Dawn had yet to arrive, and he would be safe outside for a few minutes at least.
Deciding that being horny and safe was better than horny and fried in the sun, Stone remained where he was and watched as the women removed their clothes. They stood, looking at the water while wearing panties and bras as if deciding whether to swim or not.
The birthday girl, Ava, he thought the DJ at the bar had said, reached back and unhooked her bra, slipping it off her body.
His groin flinched again, and he put a hand on the window for support, mentally willing her to remove all other clothes. He knew he was being rather perverted, but he didn’t care. Something like this happened once in a lifetime and he would be damned if he missed it.
He licked his lips slowly as he watched her wade into the water, her shrieks at the cold making him throb. Since he had excellent eyesight, he could make out her hardened nipples in exquisite detail. He wondered what it would be like to take one of those nipples into his mouth and suck until she shrieked like that for him.
“Okay... that’s enough,” he whispered as he pulled himself away from the window. Watching for perverted curiosity was one thing, but being a sicko about it was another. Trying to get it out of his mind, he logged into the Dark Hunter web site, entered the secured portion that wasn’t open to the general public, and looked for someone to chat with.
An instant message popped up, and he gratefully clicked on it. Stone, my man.. what’s up? He grimaced. Drake knew that he hate being called ‘my man’… which was exactly why the man did it.
You’re not going to believe this, doode he typed back, knowing that Drake would be cringing at the long version of ‘dude’. The Asian always teased Stone about being a beach bum, and Stone played it to the hilt around him. There are four women skinny-dipping outside my place.
What the HECK are you doing online then????
I’m not a pervert Stone lied.
Catch you peeking, did they?
He could imagine Drake laughing his ass off. Got tinted windows, remember? And no, they didn’t. He realized what he wrote after he sent it. “Shit.”
~~~~~~~

May walked out of the water and grabbed her towel. “You’re right,“ she said. “I feel a lot better.”

Ava smiled as she wrapped a towel around her body. “Me too.” She glanced at the house she had left the note on. For a while, she had the feeling that someone was watching them, but the feeling had gone away. “I’ll go get that note, then we’ll leave.”

Kari watched as she made her way up the stairs, and smiled. “Ava?” She waited until her friend looked. “Dare you to flash the patio door.”

“Are you nuts?”

“Come on... I bet no one’s even home.” Kari smirked.

Ava stood at the top of the stairs. “You pick up my coffee tab for a month and I’ll do it.”

Kari hesitated. Ava drank a lot of coffee, and that alone could run into a lot of money. “Deal!” she finally said, deciding it would be worth it.

~~~~~~~~
Stone stood as a figure approached the patio door. He slowly walked to it as Ava stood in front of it, looked behind her, then inhaled deeply and opened her towel to the tinted window.
Stone’s mouth dropped open as his groin strained against his jeans at the sight. Perfect breast with taunt nipples, and wet panties that showed off a patch of hair that he immediately wanted to savor. He watched, transfixed as she gave her body a little wiggle, then took the note off the window, closed the towel and walked away.
He stared long after they were gone, the image replaying itself in his mind over and over. He finally turned, walked stiffly to the bathroom, turned the shower to its coldest setting and stepped in, completely clothed, under the frigid spray.
