It was my first day at college. Freshman and their parents swarmed the campus. I was in Sadler. Sadler 7. Part of the Sadler-Lawrinson freshman complex. One of three pairs of freshman dorms. Thousands upon thousands of college freshman. All of them scared, nervous, excited, and ready. For what ever future lay ahead.
I had arrived very early in the day. I only had two hours to travel. I could practically commute from home if I had wanted to. But lord knows I didn't want to. Freshman weren't allowed to have cars on campus, so that meant there were thousands upon thousands of parents. All of them scared, nervous, excited, and probably not ready. To let their babies loose on the world.
We had unloaded all of my things into my room. An open double I would be sharing with a long lost friend from my childhood.
I was now on my own wandering the halls. Waiting for my room mate, and others to arrive. 8 or 10 doors down the hall, was a girl. She, also, had arrived early in the morning. She seemed to have already settled in. She was in a split double, sitting at her desk messing around on her computer. She was alone, her parents must have already left.
Her door wide open, I stopped in to say, "hi." Little ol' shy me was ready to make my first college friend. I was met, however, with a less than interested cordial, yet cold, reply. She was, it seemed, quite content with being alone.
I turned and walked away. Disappointed. Feeling a bit rejected, I returned to my room.

Oh that was such a scary wonderful time for me, you capture it well, espcially about the parents releasing their children and not being ready, such a trueism!
