My daddy always answered my question the same, always... It started when I was getting off the bus and it was raining. I had to walk a block to my house from the bus stop, where I would, no doubt, find Daddy waiting there for me, ready with open arms to welcome me home again, even though I had only been gone 6 hours. Still, I knew just how special it was to him, and it soon came the thing I looked forward to most in each day of what eventually became a day full of sorrow and pain in more than just a physical sense.
That one day, well, to be truthful... it really did change my life. Not in the sense that it saved me, though in a way it did, but in the sense that it changed my perspective. It gave me a gloomier outlook on life, but it made me stronger.
I had started walking, enjoying the rain. I was soaked by the time I got home to my father, awaiting in the driveway with an umbrella.
"Bo! You could get sick, angel, soaked up like that!" he had shouted.
"Daddy?" I had randomly asked, "Where does rain come from?" I was a naive little girl, but I was curious and it changed my life, asking that question.
"Well..." he had said. "You know all those angels up in heaven?"
"Yes?" I hurried him on eagerly with my voice.
"Well, sometimes they have to cry."
I had been shocked. "Angels are happy all the time, aren't they? You know, playing harps and asking God what his favorite colors are... playing hide-and-go-seek in the clouds, right?"
"Honey, even angels are sad sometimes. Every time it rains, angels are crying on you. You have to be strong and happy, or else they cry because they want YOU to smile and laugh and be a happy little girl. You have to be strong."
I gasped. "So every time I cry, the angels get sadder and sadder... I didn't know angels cried so much..." I shook my head in disbelief.
"Which is why you must be strong, be happy with what you've got no matter what."
I remember the two of us just standing there a moment, me in the cold April raindrops - teardrops, if you will - and him under the striped umbrella... my favorite one.
He changed my life with that answer. He encouraged me without even knowing through the years to come, and he urged me on, whispered in my ear at every failing moment to never let go, never to make the angels cry...
"Come on," he said, breaking the silence. "Let's go inside. I'll make you some hot chocolate and we can greet Mommy when she gets home from work. Sound like a plan?"
I smiled, and nodded, liking the idea. And with that, the two of us walked inside hand-in-hand.
