The Letter (part 2)

Kevin walked up to the address he had written on the envelope and breathed a deep breath.  He had decided on not mailing it, as it might arrive too late.  He would deliver it to Jamie, his closest friend since Nick had died.  Jamie was a sweet girl, but Kevin knew she couldn't spend her whole life listening to Kevin's complicated problems.  Maybe that helped him decide to kill himself.  He would unburden the world a little bit.1

Jamie answered the door.  Kevin put on his best smile.  He held the letter out but didn't let go of it until he was finished talking.  "I have to go away for a while, Jamie.  This letter explains everything.  But don't read it until tonight, I don't like goodbyes and if you read it later...it would just be easier for me.   Thanks, so much Jamie.  For everything.  You've been so good to me."2

"Are you okay Kevin? What's going on?  You seem...odd.  Different.  I've never seen you like this.  Come inside, I'll make you some hot chocolate."3

"No, I really gotta go."  Kevin couldn't meet her eyes and he turned and walked away.4

"Kevin, I know something's wrong.  Talk to me.  Are you alright?  Kevin!"5

But Kevin didn't turn around, he just kept walking, picking up the pace.  Something in her heart told Jamie there was more to this than Kevin just going away. She tore open the envelope and scanned the letter.  As a few telltale words reached her eyes, the letter fluttered to the floor and the blood rushed out of Jamie's head, but she refused to let herself faint.  As soon as her head was together again, she rushed out of her house after Kevin.  By all logic he should still be well in eyesight.6

But he wasn't.7

Author notes

Ok I was going for suspense at the end and failed.  But it's better than not trying at all, right?  Right.
