Though this is a character analysis in a fiction website, I'm doing my work on a fictional character. This character is Harrison Bergeron from the fictional story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegon. So here it goes!1

Harrison Bergeron Character Analysis6

All readers of short story literature, I have a character which might change the next story you read. If you want that future to be changed, then I have got the leading factor in that decision. His name is Harrison Bergeron. In a futuristic story, this numskull gets himself in big trouble again and again, showing his true nature: not sharp, but dull as a carving knife used to cut logs. This character will blow your mind and make you think twice before reading so called “good literature.” This character will change your mind through his actions, what other characters think of him, and his dialogue.7

First of all, Harrison Bergeron decided to go against the whole United States government on live television, unarmed, by himself. This to me sounds like he’s painting a bull’s-eye on his chest, while jumping up and down, this not only ruins the bull’s-eye with crazy red streaks but it doesn’t make for a good rebellion either. On pg.137 “the photograph of Harrison was gone. A living breathing Harrison filled the screen,” it’s like a known mass murderer going on cops while he’s still wanted. This sentence shows how he just went on live TV before he thought about it. Thus with this proof Harrison has proved that he lacked the thought process to even know where he was going.8

Second of all, Mr. Bergeron through his dialogue showed his ineptitude for intelligence. Harrison walked into a room after tearing off a door and pronounced in the story on pg.138. “Let the first woman who dares rise to her feet come and claim her mate and her throne.” When I first read this I couldn’t believe what he was saying. Harrison just blabbed on live television one of the crummiest pick up lines I’ve EVER heard. More than that he sounded retarded. Unable to form words in the correct manner. Thus again Harrison has proven himself to be a so called “un intelligent” kind of fellow,9

The third thing that makes Harrison look stupid is because someone hated him enough to kill him and his girlfriend when they were kissing the ceiling. In most peoples books you have to be really stupid to let someone walk in and shoot you. If the handicapper general hated him enough so that she went in and shot Harrison Bergeron and his new girlfriend. (P.137) That should mean that Harrison Bergeron was mentally disabled just enough, so that in the Handicapper General’s opinion, he had to die. This just goes to show you another reason why Harrison Bergeron is not a smart person, and is in fact, as non-intelligent as a person can be.10

As you can see those are the three reasons why Harrison Bergeron is not intelligent, or even a half wit. First, because he thought he could fight the government of the U.S single handedly. Secondly, because Harrison decided to open his big mouth and say a terrible line. Then finally, because he ticked off a person so much that he got shot by a 10 gauge firearm. Thusly, that’s why Harrison Bergeron is not an intelligent person, which is also why you should go and buy the story “Harrison Bergeron” so you can burn it, and the character Harrison Bergeron within it.11
