Jaypaw opened her misty blue eyes to the bright sunlight. Feeling something on her pelt, she glanced over her shoulder to find her brother Juniperpaw's tail laying across her pelt.1

Jaypaw hissed and shook it off, also shaking water off. She glanced to the top of the apprentice's den, which was made out of bracken. Dew was dripping into the den, very slowly.2

"Oh well," she muttered, and then shouldered her way out of the rather cramped den. Not many cats were up, it was a nice greenleaf day and all everyone wanted to do was sleep.3

"Good morning Jaypaw."4

The gray she-cat spun around to Dawnflare, Jaypaw's mother's sister. The she-cat bowed her head.5

"Hiya. I am up early so I could get some good fresh-kill or maybe go on my first hunting lesson. Riversong insisted I rest for the rest of the day yesterday after becoming an apprentice."6

Dawnflare nodded slowly. "Well, hunting patrols are being organized now with the cats awake, Riversong's up so I'd catch her."7

Jaypaw bounded in the direction of the Hightree, where the leader called Clan meeting. The deputy, Clawpelt, was at the base organizing patrols.8

"... and Firepaw bring a patrol to MountainClan border. Snaketooth..."9

"May I join a patrol with my mentor?" blurted out Jaypaw, interrupting her deputy's sentence.10

"Er, is that okay with you, Riversong?" asked Clawpelt.11

Riversong fluffed her pelt out. "Yes, but she will not be rude next time."12

Jaypaw licked her chest fur a few times until she felt a flick on her ear.13

"Let's go," hissed Snaketooth. "Before it gets to warm."14

Jaypaw, energetic and hyper, bounded to the bush wall and pushed through into a forest. She was so excited for her first lesson!15

"Jaypaw, follow me. We'll go practice hunting. Snaketooth, please hunt yourself," ordered Riversong.16

Snaketooth stared at his mate for a second, then trotted off.17

"Ever play the leaf game?" asked Riversong.18

Jaypaw had. "Yup."19

"We will play that then. You must catch the leaf."20

It sounded easy to Jaypaw, but she agreed. She found a leaf, fluttering in the air and pounced, dropping on the green shape.21

"Nice. Now let's try hunting."22

By the end of the patrol, Jaypaw caught two voles. As she trudged back to camp, happy at her hunt, the scent of Bluepaw hit her over the overwhelming smell of vole.23

"Hey Bluepaw!" she called out, dropping her vole on the fresh-kill pile. "What's up?"24

"I'm going to collect herbs with Fallenpetal," he meowed. Her blue fur ruffled in the slight wind and he looked up to the sky, which was bright and sunny.25

"Have you learned anything yet?" asked Jaypaw, after a short moment of silence.26

"Uh- not much. But I have to look for three herbs; sun berries to stop the chills, tulip root to stop swelling and er... pansy to stop stomach-aches. You?"27

"What do you think? I learned to hunt," she said, holding her gray head up high. "Now you go do your stuff; I'm going to find Juniperpaw."28

Bluepaw waved his tail in parting and padded out of camp with his mentor. Jaypaw raised her head again and tried to sniff out Juniperpaw.29

She found him in the elder's den, with a huge ball of old, damp moss in jaws. He spat it out when he saw his sister.30

"I'm a bit busy right now."31

"Oh, I was wondering if you had gone training yet," said Jaypaw.32

The tortoiseshell tom shook his shaggy head. "Kiwiblaze told me to do the elder's den."33

"Poor you," she whispered mockingly. "Have fun while I take a nap!"34

The tom grunted and picked of a fresh ball of moss, padding back into the elder's den.35

Before the apprentice took her nap, she took a mouse from the fresh-kill pile and settled down. Her friend, Maplepaw, took a sparrow and settled next to her.36

"How was your first day?" the maple-colored she-cat asked. She was half a moon older than Jaypaw.37

"Great. I caught two plump voles!" exclaimed Jaypaw, her tail thumping on the ground.38

"You did better than me, all I caught was a scrawny robin," laughed Maplepaw, her big green eyes gleaming. "Well, I got to go on border patrol, see ya!"39

The she-cat got up and padded away to her mentor, leaving Jaypaw alone. She finished up the vole's leg and padded to the apprentice's den, feeling warm and full.40

Jaypaw stumbled to the back of the den, where her nest was. The only apprentice other than her in the den was Firepaw, who was snoring lightly.41

Smirking, Jaypaw settled in the nest and wrapped her tail around her ears. A few heartbeats later, she found herself on in a rocky scene.42

The apprentice felt unbalanced and unsafe on the rocks, so she scanned the place for any sign of trees. But suddenly, two different smelling cats jumped onto each other. It was BreezeClan and MountainClan, who had been rivals for a long, long time. Jaypaw tried leaping on a gray she-cat, but landed on the ground with a soft thud.43

She was like a spirit.44

Annoyed that she couldn't help her Clanmates, she knew all she could do was wait on a nearby rock and watch. The battle raged on for what seemed like a heartbeat or a moon, but then more scents came pouring in. DarkClan and StreamClan?45

Jaypaw hissed and watched longer. All of a sudden, out of the swarm of cats, she saw her and her brothers, running up, into the sky?46

Before Jaypaw dreamt more, she awoke with a jolt.47

"What in StarClan's name was that about?" she muttered. Moonpaw, one of the apprentice's now in the den, looked up at Jaypaw, but then settled in her nest.48

Whatever it meant, Jaypaw didn't care at the moment. She just turned over and fell into a dreamless sleep.
