On top a high hill, through a forest so deep
there was a small castle you've seen in your sleep.1

The people below they'd yell and they'd cry
when the creature inside looked when they'd pass by.2

"Look, there he is, that creature inside,
with fur on his face and those evil eyes!"3

Through the windows none could see light
the darkness inside had blurred their sight.4

For if they had known that monster inside
they would have seen no reason to hide.5

His face may be furry, as they all say,
and his eyes may look funny, and may frighten away...6

But, inside his heart, what really matters,
the warmth and kindness ruled out the latter.7

He may have looked frightening behind that window.
But, harm on his mind? I really don't think so.8

No, he was watching waiting to see
if someone outside was the same as he9

One day as he watched, looking out in his woe,
a small girl walked by and looked in his window10

But, fear on her face? he just couldn't see it,
there was more to this girl, he could almost feel it.11

"Who is that up there" the young girl asked,
to the people around as they all passed12

"A hideous creature" they said as they stared
"Don't you go up there! no one has dared."13

But she had something else on her mind
this girl thought more may be behind.14

Through the woods, so deep and so dark,
she travel up high to reach her mark.15

From way down below it was small in her eye,
but when she arrived the castle stood high.16

A wide door was open only a creek
barely open enough for her to creep17

Inside was something, a sight to behold
with beauty surrounding, so the story is told.18

Winding stairs led up to a tower
and as she climbed high a clock struck the hour.19

Somewhere the floor creaked, and she turned round to find
that the large clock that chimed hid a figure behind.20

"Who are you dear sir?" she started to say,
but the figure behind just backed away.21

"Please dear sir, I'm just here to say
that I will not judge by your looks, like they"22

The figure stepped forward and moved into the light
but this little girl had no fright23

"My dear maiden," a soft voice sighed.
"I have waited for years for one to pass by24

"One who'd see past my hideous face
and come to my tower and into this place25

"You see, my dear girl, I am an old man
with so much to give, so much I have26

"But none down there could ever see
the heart behind the face of me.27

"Please dear maiden we haven't much time
just follow me", and so they climbed.28

Higher and higher and higher still
they climbed till they reached his window sill29

"You see, my dear maiden, this city is mine;
and I'm here to make sure everything's fine30

"I've been waiting so long for one who can see
the beauty inside the people they meet.31

"You, dear small child, can set the world right
and let people know: seeing is more than just sight.32

The girl stared out at the people below
and said to the man "sir, I just don't know33

"Those people below, I just don't see how
their mind can be changed by anyone now"34

She sat quiet, for a moment, then sighed
"I suppose I can try to change their minds"35

The sun was now setting and the city it shined,
and through the dim light she saw something so kind.36

Way down in that town she saw for the first
a small act of kindness that wasn't rehearsed37

A small child was hungry with nothing to eat.
his clothes were all ragged, no shoes on his feet.38

Right down the lane where the small boy sat crying
a young man walked over, then sat down sighing39

"My dear boy", he said with a tear,
"What has happened? Why have you no cheer?"40

"Please dear sir, I don't mean to pry
but it's just that my sister...she started to cry.41

"I have no food to give dear sir,
nothing to give, nothing for her."42

He hadn't much money, not much to give,
this money was all the man had to live.43

He placed all three coins into the boys hand
and told the young boy "here you go lad"44

In that short moment, in that small time,
the girl had seen there was still beauty inside.45

As the small girl turned back around,
she saw that the old man was no where to be found.46

Within an hour the story had spread,
and the people thought with terrible dread47

"How could we not have seen inside
to the kindness in those gentle eyes"48
