New Hampshire
America
When Cowen walks into school that day, no one is asking why. He’s a cool kid, someone who everyone loves and wants to go out with. Girls kiss his feet just for the feeling that you know Cowen Toiler.
Cowen’s palms are sweating. For a normal teenage boy Cowen doesn’t sweat a lot. He keeps his skin nice and tight and perfect. Appearance is everything in New Hampshire. And boy doesn’t he know it.
His hands are wrapped round an object. The metal is making him sweat even more. The pupils at school are oblivious to it. No one expects a thing. Then girls are looking at him and thinking ‘dear God, how lucky is the person who ends up with him?’ It’s true. The person is lucky. Or not, we don’t know.
Now the sweat is evident. It’s dripping onto his shirt, just behind his ear. His heart is pumping so loudly that he’s surprised that no one can hear it. How come no one can see the print it is making in his chest? It’s pounding in his ears. He can feel it blowing his ear drums.
Cowen is scared. Cowen Toiler is scared. If anyone knew that he would be penalized for the rest of his life.
Cowen never gets scared. Cowen’s brave. Cowen’s hard. Cowen’s Cowen. Everybody loves Cowen. It’s a shame they can’t see him for what he really is.
Tray Hiller is handsome. Tray is everybody’s ‘cup-of-tea’. He’s mixed raced; half black half white, and has a girlfriend. He is prepared for today. He knows what’s going to happen, though he’s not telling anyone.
He’s Cowen’s best friend, see, and if he tells on Cowen, then Cowen is going to ‘kick his ass’. Best friends don’t tell on each other, Cowen’s told him that much. Best friends help each other. And that is exactly what Tray is going to do, and is currently doing.
Tray is leading Michaela away from the scene. He’s gently leading her off to the art room, the room she works in most of her life. Her brown hair is flowing wonderful down her back as she flicks it here and there, catching attention of everybody and looking as if she’s on a L’Oreal advert. She’s good looking too.

Tallia is smiling to herself, her luscious blond hair rubbing her shoulders. She’s had it recently cut, with a box fringe. She’s beautiful, and she’s smart. Her blue eyes are looking excited. Adrenalin is rushing through her body like a fox chasing a rabbit. She can’t wait for what is about to happen to happen.
‘Hey,’ she’s saying on the phone. ‘Look, girls, meet me at cafeter-ia.’ There is talking on the other end of the phone before she answers. ‘I know I said meet me in the boy’s gym but I can’t be bothered to go there so meet me in the cafeteria.’
Sarah is beautiful. Sarah is a black girl with black hair flowing down her front and back and brown eyes that shine in the light and show her soul. Sarah is Sarah Prince.
Sarah is popular but a good popular. Everyone loves her, but not because she’s bad, because she’s not. Sarah Prince is good at school. She gets good grades and does good work and has good friends and never gets into trouble. She’s popular because she’s all nice. She’s nice looking and has a nice personality and that, nowadays, goes far.
Sarah Prince is dating Darren Walker.

Darren Walker is no so cool, not like Cowen Toiler. In fact, Darren hates Cowen. Darren thinks Cowen is a sleaze ball. Darren is white and is handsome with a boyish charm of a sixteen going on seventeen year old.
The Walkers and The Princes are best friends. They are two families that lived next-door to each other and love each other to bits. They are also not prepared for what’s going to happen today.
Back to Cowen, who is currently at the door to the gym. He knows that his girlfriend, Michaela, is out of sight, safe and with Tray. He knows that Tallia’s friends and his friends are in the cafeteria, safe as well. And who he wants in the gym is safely in the gym.
He takes a deep breath before he enters. His right hand is secured around the object in his pocket. With his left hand, he pushes the door and walks into the gym. The gym is a basketball court/football pitch/gymnastics ground. The people look up when he walks in.
‘Hey,’ they say to him, their voice deep, pretending they’re real men.
‘Hey,’ Cowen says back, normally and nodding. Then he pulls his right hand out, brings it in front of him and shoots the two boys in front of him. The object was a gun.
But then it goes wrong. Darren Walker walks into the gym from the changing rooms and Cowen’s reflex is to shoot. He shoots him in the chest and watches Darren fall to the floor. Then he’s really frightened. Now he’s crapping himself. He didn’t expect Darren to walk out. He didn’t want to shoot Darren. But he did. And now it’s wrong.
