UnSeelie Dreams XX

He opened his eyes to find a small campfire dug in the ground just outside the shelter of the tree. Light flickered softly as the flames rose up lending warmth to the area. The thick limbs stretch high over head giving him shelter. A sweet elusive scent of nectar floated down from the foliage.

He shook his head but didn’t bother to question how he got there. Questioning anything in this place was useless when it was easier to just accept. He settled down under the tree to enjoy the fire. He knew better than to look into the flames so instead surveyed the surrounding area. The wildflowers and dried grass grew tall enough to hide any dangerous creatures.

It was still out there. He couldn’t see it but he knew deep inside it was following him. Those eyes were watching his every move. It wouldn’t attack or even get close to him; its kind didn’t like getting close to humans so why was it stalking him. The fire would keep it from coming into his camp so he felt relatively save for the time being.

His stomach growled. The last thing he had eaten was those few crusts of bread at the runes. Was it only a few minutes ago? He wondered. How long have I been here? No memories of time seemed to surface. Sighing, he knew he couldn’t fall into the trap of time since it didn’t exist and never had existed.

He wanted something meaty to sink his teeth into; his incisors itched with longing to tear flesh from bone. The corpses of two rabbits lay by the fire. He ran his hand through their silky tawny fur and over their well muscled bodies.

Sacrifice one to it, came the whisper. With no hesitation, he picked up one rabbit and tossed it into the night. The grass moved as it made its way slowly to the offering. Iridescent eyes burned brightly as it sniffed around then picked the rabbit up and moved away. The only noise he could discern from the distance was the snapping of bones. He turned to his meal and quickly prepared it with the blade. His stomach balked at the thought of cooking the meat. Tossing the entrails and head into the flames, he plucked the heart from within the ribcage and bit into it enjoying the savagery and sweetness. Blood smeared the bottom half of his face as he continued feeding on the small body.

When he finished he licked his lips then left the pile of bones in the soft grass. He lay back and stared up at the tree limbs covering him. They swayed and seemed to swell, to curve into figures. He could pick out feminine and masculine shapes twining, twisting, and reaching out to the other in delicate ecstasy. The perfume of their erotic display made him drowsy and he closed his eyes to sleep.

Bright white light flashed in his dream. Her face, a smile, different memories bounced around his head yet nothing he could grasped for long. He woke up confused and disoriented. The campfire had long burned out leaving him slightly chilled. The sky had not changed from night to day but remained the color of dusk. He could hear the low hum of insects and also something else. Something he couldn’t hear but rather felt.

It called to him with its beauty.
