Behind the slight smile and the sunken eyes, truth awakens in secret places kept within the confines of a sleeping garden. Past the walls of climbing ivy and the hedge maze freshly trimmed, whispers of an intruder beckons her to hide herself. Concealed among the sunflowers, she watches him lightly walk in her direction. His admiration of her blossoming garden is evident in his eyes. Every kind of flower enchants him, but it’s the sunflowers that capture his attention. His grin evolves into a broad smile and he laughs as he smells the sweet fragrance of the sunflowers, glistening with fresh morning dew.
For years, she feared this inevitable moment. It was the reason for the high walls surrounding the garden’s interior. She's aware she has the means to stop him from taking what she cherishes…but only watches in silent acceptance, remembering that eventually this must be done. The man takes a knife from his pocket and ever so carefully severs a sunflower from its roots, deeply entrenched in the rich soil. Watching in despair, a tear falls and drips off the edge of her jaw line. She doesn’t move as he cuts the sunflowers around her and he doesn’t stop when he discovers her among the towering flowers.
He freezes when he comes to the last sunflower. Glancing at the girl with tears streaming down her face, he pauses. Without words but with his eyes, he tells her this had to happen sooner or later. He waits for a response but she just stares at him with saddened eyes, resigned to the fate she chose. The man leaves, with all the sun’s glory in his arms and a triumphant smile on his face.
Watching him as he happily departs from her sanctuary, she notices the last sunflower. She knows pity is not the reason he left it, but as a reminder of the life she once had. And in acknowledged defeat, she rips the sunflower’s roots from the ground and destroys the last bit of golden light that once illuminated her garden. Breathless and tired, she bitterly whispers, “This is what’s supposed to happen, isn’t it?”

This is awesomely weirdly inexplicably great. I have NO IDEA what the heck was going on, but the man is a bastard and the girl is a wimp.
Come on! Resigning yourself to fate!?! That's just an excuse for not fighting! Fight, little sunflower girl! Keep the evil man from killing your flowers! The flower-stealing bastard!
Heheh. Um. Hehehe.
Okay, thought that was brewing while reading:
I once read this fictionalized version of the legend of Rama and Sita from Hindu mythology. Rama was an unmarried young prince who was one day visiting a neighboring kingdom. While he was there, servents were digging a pleasure garden and discovered a beautiful bracelet. Excited by this discovery, they kept digging and attached to that bracelet was an arm! Attached to that arm was a body and, by the time the servants finished digging, Lady Sita was revealed, a young goddess born of the earth, sent by the Gods for Lord Rama to marry.
So my theory is that Sunflower Girl is a goddess. Just like Sita, she waits in the Earth, her mother, for her body to form while a wall of sunflowers protects her. Still stuck halfway in the earth, the bastard man destroys her only surface protection and leaves her defenseless for some cruel purpose.
Hey, it's as good a theory as any, right?
Great story. I really enjoyed reading it. -

Hmmm...this story seems like an allegory for losing one's virginity. Am I close? It almost reads like a dream where she is either raped or loses her virginity. Not sure which. I really like this. Your language is impeccable. Excellent prose and pacing. I'm curious about the meaning, c'mon now, hook a brother up!

Nice job! -

haha...well, what happened is i started writing this about a completely different issue. But it turns out that the situation I'm in presently is too complicated for this allegory. In the end, it became about a girl who opens her heart up to a guy. I have a guy friend who once told me that innocence is going to be taken away eventually, so I might as well just get in a relationship and not worry about being heartbroken. psh...anyway- the girl knew he was going to break her heart and he knew what he was doing all along as well. In the end, he takes a piece of her that she'll never get back, only with the shattered memory of what was.
This is such a messed up rant...and I made it so it had layers you could dissect. I think I might expand it a bit and add detail and such to the story, but who knows, I might just be done with it.
sorry...i'm a little out of it tonight. thanks for commenting!
