4) friend of the family, old scholar, gained deep respect from family, has helped the father out of many a tight corner with his methodical wisdom. kind, easy, particular liking toward girl - best of friends. understands nature.11

5) duke/lord of Chester, heads small army, rich and powerful. thinks there may be a war soon. arrogant, argumentative.12

6) lord's wife/ the lady. pretty, younger by far then lord. needs new maid. educated, sympathetic - sensitive, clever.13
