Twitter and Tauntra in the Battle with Bully Bird

Down near the bank of a creek, which flowed through the valley. Giving strength to the tall trees growing near the muddy grass.
No one would think this place as beautiful, but in this place that looked no more then swampy grassland, there is beauty within.

Look closely, there on that branch of an old oak tree lies something to see. A humming bird! With green wings, A shiny pink beard and a breast as white as the clouds in the sky. His name is Twitter. A little young bird, perched on a branch of that tree. Watching the other birds fly through the sky, stopping slightly to drink the nectar from the flowers, but none at the humming bird feeder that held a mixture so sweet and soothing down your throat. He loved that wonderful flavor, but was too scared to move off his branch to drink the juice of heaven. For another bird, a bigger bird sat there on top of the feeder.

It didn’t seem fair thought Twitter. Why should this humming bird have the right to chase all the other birds away, keeping all the sweet and delicious nectar to him self. When there was enough for everyone, just because he was bigger than all the other humming birds.

As Twitter watched, there was another bird, with bright yellow wings, soaring over from the bigger bird and stared to tease and taunt him. “What is she doing?!” thought Twitter. He’d never do anything to make the bigger bird angry, but she went right along and teased the bigger bird to the point of anger. In which he went off after her.

“Now’s my chance!” thought Twitter to himself. He flew down from the branch toward the red humming bird feeder, dipped his beak into the hole and sipped in the sweet tasting nectar. Other birds came to join him at the other holes. They stuck their beaks into them as well, getting there fill, knowing that the bigger bird would be back soon to chase them away.

“He’s coming back!” cried a little humming bird, one younger then Twitter with green wings with yellow feathers on her face and a breath almost as white as Twitters.

All the other birds flew away, all except for Twitter. “Just one more sip,” he thought, but soon the bigger bird reached the feeder in a flash perched right above Twitter, looking angrily down at him. Twitter looked up and froze for a second then quietly said. “A… a bye,” as he flew as fast as lightening, back into the trees, the bigger bird not far behind.

Twitter flew throughout the trees, trying to get the bigger bird off his trail, as the bigger bird began to gain. “I’ve got to speed up,” thought Twitter and speeding up he did.

The bigger bird was getting further and further behind him. “He’s really not that fast,” thought Twitter! He cut through a branch of leaves, seeing that the bigger bird was now stalled. For he couldn’t fit as well through the leaves as Twitter could, because of his size.

Twitter hid underneath some leaves. Watching as the bigger humming bird turned this head from side to side in anger, seeing that Twitter was nowhere in sight, then flew back to the feeder in frustration.

Twitter lied there under the leaves breathing loudly. “That was a close one,” he said to himself.

“Hello!” another little humming bird that came up behind Twitter, making him jump so frantically that he nearly fell off the branch of leaves.

“Uh…,” he turned. “Oh hi.” Looking up at the other humming bird. She had gold on her breast with orange on her face, and wings the color of the sun at morning break. The colors Twitter envied to have, for pink, green and white where just so common.

“I’m Tauntra,” said the bright gold, orange and yellow winged bird with a smile, as she looked down at him.

“Twitter,” he answered as a memory sparked. “Hey aren’t you the one that teased that bigger bird at the bird feeder?”

“Oh you mean Bully Bird? Yes,” answered Tauntra smiling. “That was me and you’re the one that he chased away, right after he came back from chasing me. That was very brave.”

“Brave!” exclaimed Twitter. “Me? No that was a mistake, I shouldn’t have drank for so long.”

“No, it was great, it’s nice to see another bird put him in his place. It really isn’t fair that Bully Bird chases all the other birds away. They’ve got just as much right to drink from the feeder as he does,” said Tauntra.

“Yes he can, because he’s bigger then all the other birds,” cried Twitter.

“True, yes, that’s why I need your help,” said Tauntra.

“Me, why?”

“Oh, you haven’t figured it out yet!” exclaimed Tauntra.

“No,” said Twitter.

“Alright you, me and all the other birds know that Bully Bird is bigger then all of us, but it’s only you and me who know that he’s not as fast. Because we’re the only ones that he’s chased before.”

“Okay then, what are you trying to say?” asked Twitter.

“Huuuh!” sighed Tauntra in exhaustion. “What I’m saying is. You can help me put Bully Bird in his place.”

“Put him in his place!” cried Twitter. “How?”

“Listen, we both realize that he doesn’t like to be teased, so all we have to do is tease him.”

“Tease him!” Twitter shook his head in fear of Tauntra’s suggestion. “No way! That will make him angry.”

“Yes, tease him so much that he’ll chase us around the trees and no matter how angry he gets, he won’t be able to catch us. Please, will you help me? All you have to do is follow my lead. He can’t chase both of us at the same time, but we can tease him at the same time. He’ll get so confused, it will drive him crazy. Will you help me?”

“Uh…. I don’t know,” answered Twitter skeptically.

“Come on it will be fun,” pleaded Tauntra.

Twitter thought about this for a second. Could it really work? “Well it would be worth a try. Okay,” cried Twitter. “I’ll do it.”

“Wonderful!” said Tauntra in excitement.

At the top of the branches in the warm sunlight, Twitter and Tauntra discussed their plans.

A little after the sun went behind the trees. They flew down toward the humming bird feeder and Bully Bird. “Okay wait here and follow my lead,” said Tauntra as she left Twitter in the grove of flowers, heading toward Bully Bird.

“Hey, Bully Bird, remember me. Are you going to try and catch me this time? Fat chance at that!”

Bully Bird just sat there on top of the feeder; the dark blue feathers on his back stiffened with frustration, annoyed with anger. How dare this bird come and tease him even more. This time she was not going to get away with it.

He zoomed down from the feeder right after her as she sped away into the trees, through some branches. Bully Bird just charged through the thicket. He wasn’t going to lose her this time, but right when he got through the leaves, he lost her.

“Where are you hiding!” he screamed. “Come out!”

“Hey Bully Bird!” he turned to see another bird to his left with a bright pink beard. “Why don’t you try and pick on someone you own size? That’s some good advice to follow, then you wouldn’t have any excuse to chase any of us.”

“How dare you try and tell me what to do!” yelled Bully Bird as he started to chase this other bird throughout the trees. “I’ll get you, you’ll pay!”

This little bird was almost just as fast as the other, but not fast enough, he’d catch him in no time, but what stopped him the most was when the small bird flew through a thicket of leafs. Which took a longer time for Bully Bird to get through.

When he finally made it through. The humming bird was nowhere in sight. “Where are you coward?! Come out!”

“Hey Bully Bird,” he turned to see who it was, as the same bird from before with yellow wings stood above him on a small branch. “I thought your score was with me?” she said. “What are you doing chasing that other bird?”

She made another teasing face at him, as his blood began to boil. “I’ll get you. Come back here!” yelled Bully Bird.

Bully Bird chased Tauntra through the trees, round and round as she led him through another thicket. When he got past, she was nowhere in sight. He searched through the clearing of branches, making sure not to lose her again. “I know you’re in here!” He heard a tiny little laugh to the side of him and started toward a group of leafs with anger.

“Well Bully Bird, still picking on birds that aren’t the same size as you?” asked Twitter. Bully Bird turned and looked at him. Staring and recognizing him now as the other bird. “What is this?” Bully Bird screamed. “A trick?”

“What else would it be Bully Bird?” said Tauntra as she perched on a branch on the other side of him.

Bully Bird turned his head to both of them, in confusion.

“Hey Bully Bird, bet you can’t catch me,” yelled Twitter. Bully Bird went toward him.

“Hey!” screamed Tauntra. “Your scores with me, remember?” Bully Bird stopped and turned toward her.

“Hey Bully Bird are you still going to pick on other birds that aren’t the same size as you!” yelled Twitter.

Bully stopped in the air, he was so confused, what were these two birds doing? He kept going back and forth through the clearing trying to catch one and pluck their feathers out, but failed at it terribly. When one flew off, the other came back to tease and torment him.

“Hey Bully Bird!”

“Hey Bully Bird!”

“HEY BULLY BIRD!”

Bully Birds head began to spin and turn, as his vision became dark and dizzy, to where he couldn’t handle it anymore. His vision was so blurry that he could no longer fly. He began to spin down to the ground, into a patch of thick grass that buried him.

“We did it!” cried Tauntra. “That was quite fun we should do it again, we make a pretty good team.”

Twitter didn’t say anything, but flew down from his branch toward the patch of green grass.

“Twitter! Twitter, where are you going!” cried Tauntra after him.

Twitter looked into the patch of grass, hearing little peeps of cries. “A… are you okay?”

There was a small sigh inside the grass as Bully Bird moaned. “Why are you being so mean to me?”

“Us mean to you” called Tauntra in question, who had come down to join Twitter. “It was you who were being mean to us.”

“Your just like them,” cried Bully Bird.

“Just like who?” asked Twitter.

“All the other birds who teased me because I was smaller then all of them,” moaned Bully Bird. “But I got bigger than all of the other birds and I give them what they deserve. I’m in charge and no one does anything without my say so.”

“What?!” cried Twitter and Tauntra in unison, but now beginning to understand.

“But Bully Bird, it was never us who were mean to you?” said Tauntra.

“Your mean to me now, the way you call me Bully Bird, that’s not my name.”

“What is your name then?” asked Twitter.

“No, I’m not telling you my name, you’ll tease me even more,” said Bully Bird.

“No we wont, try us, we promise we wont laugh,” said Tauntra.

Bully bird stuck his head out from the grass. “Really?”

“Yes,” answered Twitter.

Bully Bird sighed, hoping he could trust them. “Alright, it’s....... it's Rover.”

“Rover?” said Tauntra in surprise.

“Don’t laugh!” he demanded.

“We weren’t going too,” said Twitter.

“I like the name Rover,” said Tauntra.

“Really, you don’t think it sounds like a dog’s name?”

“No, of course not,” said Twitter.

“Hey Rover do you want to play a game with us?” asked Tauntra.

“What kind of game?” asked Rover, completely out of the grass.

“Hide ‘n’ go seek and Twitter’s it!” said Tauntra. “So start counting Twitter.”

Twitter look up at Tauntra then down at Rover, as a big simle came on his face. "Alright," he closed his eyes and started to count. “1, 2, 3.….”

“Come on Rover, let’s go hide,” cried Tauntra.

Rover flew up to join Tauntra, as Twitter kept counting. “Count to thirty, Twitter!” said Tauntra as her and Rover flew off, to hide.

“Okay! 10, 11, 12.…..”

The sun is setting across the sky. All the humming birds go drink at the feeder, enjoying the sweet and soothing nectar. For there is no longer a bully bird, to chase the humming birds away. For, now there are three great and wonderful friends.

Author notes

What inspired me to write this story?
It started as an assignment in my 12th grade English class. We learned about T.S Eliote and his novel of memorirs, CATS, which were such a success that it was turned into a Broadway Musical. Our assignment was to pick a certain animal as T.S Eliote did with CATS and write a short story about them. Sadly I was stumped on how I was going to do
This assignment. So I started with the basics. Okay pick an Animal, “Humming Birds.” Why humming birds? Well ever since I was young girl, I always liked humming birds. Sparkling, like flying jewels in the sky.
Growing up in the city. I never really saw humming birds. Until my grandparents moved to Wellsville, a small town nestled in the beautiful Cash Valley, Utah. Behind their house was a grove of trees, with a creek running right through it.
Which was the setting for my story. The first year we went to visit them. There weren’t that many humming birds, but there was a bully bird. That would constantly guard the humming bird feeder and chase all the other birds away and there were also birds like Twitter and Tauntra who would get the bully bird to chase them away allowing other birds to get a drink from the feeder. Right then a story was flowing on to the pages. I hope that everyone will enjoy this tale as I share my memories of childhood with you.

    Welcome to StoryWrite

You story quite reminds me of the behavior between the hummingbirds and the other birds around the feeders on my mom's front porch. Well done with good detail and dialogue.

Keep writing and once more, welcome.
