The Vampire That Loved Me, Chapter 4

Chapter 4

She let out a loud, piercing scream. She pressed harder against the wall, wishing her room was 500 feet longer. The figure in the window moved, setting first one foot into her room, then the other.

She pressed even harder against the wall. The figure now towered above her, looking down at her with a face she couldn’t see. By the outline of the shoulders, she assumed the figure to be a guy.

She was trying to make out facial features when she noticed one hand was hiding something behind the man’s back. The first image that popped into her head was that of a gun or a knife. She tried to scream again, hoping that one of the neighbors would hear her, but at that moment, she found there was a hand cupped over her mouth.

She then noticed that the hand behind the man’s back was slowly being revealed. She thought for sure that he intended to kill her. She closed her eyes and waited for him to kill her. But instead, she felt a bouquet of flowers being pushed into her hands, which she had thrown up in front of her face.

She dropped her hands and looked down at the flowers. She couldn’t see them, but they smelled beautiful. The man took his left hand away from her mouth and offered his right hand to her to help her up.

She gripped his hand with her own and hoisted herself up onto her feet. She walked toward the door and flicked the light switch on. She then turned around to see Ricky, standing calmly in the middle of her room.

She gasped in surprise. “Oh my,” she exclaimed.

“Expecting someone else to climb through your window tonight?”

“No. I didn’t expect anyone to climb through my window,” she chuckled.

He chuckled as well. “Well then tonight is your lucky night!”

She gave him a puzzled look. “What are you doing here anyway?”

“I came to see you of course.”

“Oh, I guess that makes sense,” she said, smacking her forehead with her hand.

“So what were you doing,” he asked, picking up the book she’d been reading off of the floor.

He looked at the cover and flipped through the pages. “Charles Dickens? I didn’t like it when I had to read it last year. I have no desire to read any of his work ever again!”

She gasped. “You only graduated last year!?”

He laughed. “I get that reaction a lot. Everyone thinks I look a lot older; in my middle twenties even. But you’re right, I only graduated last year.”

“Wow,” she said. “Do you go to college?”

“Yes. It’s actually not far from here. It’s just a tiny community college, but I didn’t want to go anywhere big. I much prefer the quietness.”

“Well if you’re looking for a small place, you’ve come to the right place. This stupid little town only has a population of about 300 people.”

“I don’t mind the small population. A small amount of people is better than a huge over-populated area. I don’t like huge crowds. That’s why you didn’t find me at that fair earlier. I can’t stand feeling confined.”

“Well as much as I’d love to stand here and chat all night, I have homework to do,” Isabelle said, sighing.

“Need any help,” Ricky offered.

“I suck at math,” she sighed again.

“Well, you’re night just keeps getting luckier and luckier. I happen to be a whiz at math,” he said.

“Ok well let me finish my English first and then we’ll get to the math,” she said, taking the book from him and sitting back down on her bed.

She patted the space beside her and he sat down. But after she’d gotten through only a few pages, he got up. She wanted to look up, but really needed to concentrate on the book so she could get it done. He sat down behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his head on her shoulder, reading over her shoulder.

She glanced at the clock on her nightstand. It was 10:27. She turned her head a little and said, “You’re very distracting, you know that!?”

He chuckled. “I try,” he said sarcastically. He let go of her waist and turned her around to face him. If he’d stayed in that position any longer he didn’t know what he would’ve done. Her arteries and veins had teased him with every pulsing beat of her heart.

She tossed the book onto the floor and wrapped her arms around his neck. She pulled him toward her and she kissed him. He wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her back. They continued like that for several minutes, until he stopped and pulled back, listening to something outside.

She looked at him puzzlingly. Had she done something wrong? But that was when she heard a car door and she stiffened. Her mom was home.
