INT. SONE HOME. NIGHT.1
FADE IN2
SARAH SONE, 16, beautiful, upbeat, runs into the sitting room. Papers and envelopes are scattered over a glass coffee table. She throws most of the contents onto the carpet, revealing an open personal address book. She flips through it, flustered. 3
VOICE4
Come upstairs, Sarah!5
SARAH6
I can’t, not yet!7
She stops at a page in the middle of the address book and smiles triumphantly.8
SARAH9
I knew I had a number for a flower service in here somewhere.10
She dials the number on a cordless phone and stretches out on the couch. Two rings are heard before someone picks up.11
SARAH12
This is Sarah Sone. I need to place an order for 100 mixed red and white roses and 10 white rose corsages.13
(A beat)14
It’s my wedding.15
(A beat)16
Saturday.17
(A beat)18
Please! It’s an emergency!19
(A beat)20
You can’t have a wedding without flowers, now can you.21
(A beat)22
Thank you so much! I’ll do that.23
She hangs up the phone and visibly relaxes. After a moment, she heads upstairs.24
FADE OUT25
INT. MORGAN HOME. AFTERNOON.26
FADE IN27
MICHAEL MORGAN, 18, a little overweight, neat appearance, sits at his bedroom desk. He looks as if he has not slept. Many pages are being printed, but he does not remove them from the printer. Michael’s best friend, JAY LUND, 16, ‘biker’ clothing, enters the bedroom.28
JAY29
Let me guess, you’ve been up all night again.30
Michael nods, otherwise motionless.31
JAY32
Wedding or no wedding, you need your sleep. You’re not going to be able to look your best if you’re half asleep through the ceremony.33
MICHAEL34
I know, but there’s so much to do!35
JAY36
What about Sarah? Isn’t she doing anything for this crazy wedding? 37
MICHAEL38
She’s been just as busy as me these last few weeks. You’d think we were on one of those TV reality shows! 39
JAY40
You need to calm down. You need to be organized. You’ll never be ready in time if these are the conditions you’re working in.41
Jay takes a pile of paper off the printer and casually flips through them. He reaches a picture of a limo and leaves it at the front.42
JAY43
I see you found a method of transportation.44
MICHAEL45
Yeah. 46
JAY47
Nice…48
MICHAEL49
I hope. 50
JAY51
You hope? What do you mean, you hope? The limo should have been booked months ago.52
MICHAEL53
Everything should have been booked months ago, but between school and working out, and Sarah’s art, we just never got around to it. Then there was work. We had to pay for this somehow.54
JAY55
I get it already! I’m here to help, but I’m not planning your wedding for you. Keep in mind that this is not a TV reality show. It is not a movie. It’s not even a soap opera. Your wedding is in three days and you have a lot of work to do.56
Jay grabs the telephone from Michael’s cluttered nightstand and drags it to the desk. He dials the number on the limo ad and presses the phone to Michael’s ear. Three rings are heard.57
FADE OUT58
INT. SONE HOME. NIGHT.59
FADE IN60
Sarah is stretched out on her bed. She appears to be in a trance. Photos of flowers are scattered around her on the blanket. Her best friend, MEGAN JONES, 17, small-framed, cute, runs into the bedroom and jumps onto the bed. She smiles excitedly.61
MEGAN62
Snap out of it! Sarah!63
Sarah blinks and turns toward Megan.64
MEGAN65
Wake up hun! We’re planning a wedding here!66
Megan gathers the photos together and drags Sarah off of the bed.67
MEGAN68
Are these the flowers for Saturday?69
SARAH70
Yes, I’m getting those roses.71
Sarah points to a photo of a bouquet of half-open red and white roses.72
MEGAN73
Those are beautiful. When are you picking them up?74
SARAH75
Saturday morning, I think. I just have to call to confirm.76
MEGAN77
Sarah! You’re calling them quickly, before they close for the night. Then you and me are going to bed.78
SARAH79
You and I.80
MEGAN81
Whatever! Just make the phone call.82
Megan grabs the cordless phone that is on the floor by the bed and hands it to Sarah.83
FADE OUT84
INT. MORGAN HOME. MORNING.85
FADE IN86
Michael is asleep with his head down on the desk. Jay is on the computer, surfing the Internet. Jay stops at a picture of a park, prints it, and shakes Michael.87
JAY88
Good morning, sunshine.89
Michael opens one eye, sees Jay, and turns his head away. He is fully back asleep when Jay pulls his head up by his hair.90
MICHAEL91
Hey, watch the hair!92
Jay laughs.93
JAY94
What, that mop?95
Michael feigns anger.96
JAY97
Don’t worry, I’ll do your hair for you on Saturday. Right now my job is to make sure you make it to Saturday.98
Michael notices the picture on the computer screen.99
MICHAEL100
What’s that?101
Jay takes the page from the printer.102
JAY103
Sarah wants an outdoor wedding, does she not?104
MICHAEL105
She does. How did you know?106
JAY107
She’s my girl too, you know.108
MICHAEL109
Yeah, I know. So, where is it?110
JAY111
It’s called Dusty Orchard. Half an hour north of here. The weather is supposed to be gorgeous on Saturday. You guys can get married under the gazebo.112
MICHAEL113
That would be great. Is it a public park?114
JAY115
Yes. We can drive right over there and take over, just as long as we’re not there too late.116
MICHAEL117
Not a problem. I was looking forward to an afternoon ceremony anyway.118
JAY119
Do you even have a caterer set up? I assume that we’ll have dinner afterwards.120
Michael shrugs and reaches for a pile of paper on his desk, on the other side of the computer. Jay passes them to him.121
JAY122
Mike!123
MICHAEL124
I’m working on it. I promise.125
JAY126
You’re going to have to work a lot quicker. You are getting married in two days! Two! Now find something to feed your guests!127
Michael shuffles through the papers in his hands and finds a catering service. He is soon on his computer, sending an email.128
MICHAEL129
Don’t you worry your big head. Four-course meal for up to 50 people reserved and will be confirmed.130
JAY131
Well that’s good to hear. Hey, I’m not big-headed!132
MICHAEL133
I’m only kidding.134
FADE OUT135
INT. SONE HOME. NIGHT.136
FADE IN137
Sarah is lying on her bed while Megan paces the bedroom.138
SARAH139
Can we go back to bed yet?140
MEGAN141
That depends. Do you have a wedding dress yet?142
SARAH143
Of course!144
MEGAN145
Have you paid for it?146
SARAH147
Ye have little faith.148
MEGAN149
For good reason, too.150
SARAH151
Come on, have some faith in me.152
MEGAN153
Show me the dress.154
Megan opens Sarah’s closet and begins to sift through the skirts and dresses. She becomes increasingly annoyed and Sarah blushes.155
SARAH156
I can’t.157
MEGAN158
What do you mean you can’t?159
SARAH160
I mean, it’s still at the drycleaner’s because I forgot to pick it up!161
Megan closes the closet, forcing calmness.162
MEGAN163
Then what are you waiting for? Go get it!164
SARAH165
But what about…166
MEGAN167
Sleep? Get your dress. Then we can go to sleep.168
FADE OUT169
INT. MORGAN HOME. MORNING.170
FADE IN171
Michael is asleep on his bed and Jay is curled up on the floor. Jay wakes up slowly, yawns, and makes his way over to Michael’s closet. After flipping through the collection of shirts, Jay shakes his head. He walks back to the bed and punches Michael in the arm, who wakes up with a start.172
MICHAEL173
What!174
JAY175
What do you intend on wearing tomorrow?176
MICHAEL177
I don’t know, a tux?178
JAY179
You don’t have a tux, do you.180
MICHAEL181
Sure I have one.182
JAY183
Where is it?184
MICHAEL185
It’s downstairs. I just picked it up from the cleaners on Tuesday and didn’t want to get it all wrinkled between then and now.186
JAY187
You’re sure it’s alright down there?188
MICHAEL189
What do you think it is, a baby? Of course it’s okay.190
JAY191
What about the limo? Is it all set up?192
MICHAEL193
It’s picking Sarah and me up at our houses tomorrow after lunch and taking us right there. Are you driving yourself?194
JAY195
Yeah, I’ll meet you there. What about the caterer? Is that all set up?196
Michael finally drags himself out of bed and checks his email. A short message comes up on screen.197
MICHAEL198
Everything is set up. This confirms it. They will bring everything and set it up for us on picnic tables during the ceremony.199
JAY200
I think that’s everything.201
MICHAEL202
Are you serious? Everything?203
JAY204
You have a location, a meal, a limo, and a tux. Sarah and Megan have the flowers and dress, and they’ll figure out the exact guest list today.205
MICHAEL206
There’s something missing. I can feel it.207
JAY208
You mean the marriage contract?209
MICHAEL210
No, it’s not that. I know Sarah has that all set at home. It’s something else.211
JAY212
I don’t know what you mean.213
Michael wrings his hands and looks down at them.214
MICHAEL215
I can’t quite put a finger on it.216
Jay looks at his index finger inquisitively.217
MICHAEL218
Finger.219
(A beat)220
That’s it!221
JAY222
What’s it?223
MICHAEL224
We need the rings!225
Jay puts his head in his hands.226
MICHAEL227
What’s wrong?228
JAY229
I wanted to surprise you with them, that’s all.230
MICHAEL231
If you get them, I’ll still be surprised, seeing as I won’t know what they look like.232
Jay gives Michael a small smile.233
JAY234
I guess that works. I’ll pick them up tomorrow morning.235
FADE OUT236
INT. SONE HOME. NIGHT.237
FADE IN238
Sarah and Megan sit on the floor, facing each other. Sarah looks very tired, while Megan is upbeat.239
MEGAN240
So who’s coming to this crazy thing tomorrow?241
SARAH242
I don’t know.243
MEGAN244
You don’t know?245
SARAH246
Not offhand, no.247
MEGAN248
Oh, of course not! I mean, don’t you have a list or something?249
SARAH250
Or something.251
MEGAN252
What am I going to do with you?253
SARAH254
Ship me off to Paris for an all-expenses paid vacation?255
MEGAN256
Now that depends on who’s coming with you, and who’s paying!257
(A beat)258
Now seriously, Sarah. Show me what you’ve got.259
Sarah gets up and leads Megan downstairs. She enters the sitting room and she and Megan sit next to each other on the couch. Sarah closes the address book which is still on the coffee table and transfers it to the floor. Megan rolls her eyes and picks up the pile of paper and envelopes from the floor.260
MEGAN261
Are these the replies?262
SARAH263
Every last one of them.264
MEGAN265
You sure it’s all of them? How can you tell through all this mess?266
SARAH267
They’re all around here somewhere. If they’re not on the coffee table, they’ll be on the floor, but I’m pretty sure you got all of them.268
MEGAN269
Okay, we’ll have this figured out in no time.270
Megan gathers all the letters together and empties each envelope.271
MEGAN272
Good thing this is a small wedding.273
SARAH274
Very good thing.275
Megan and Sarah read through the letters and proceed to call each guest.276
FADE OUT277
INT. THE GOLDSMITH. MORNING.278
FADE IN279
Jay casually browses the cases of jewelry. He concentrates on the god rings. KARL, an employee, middle-aged, in a suit, approaches.280
KARL281
Can I help you, sir?282
JAY283
Oh that’s quite alright. I’m just browsing for the moment.284
KARL285
My name is Karl, in case you change your mind. Just ask if there’s anything I can do for you.286
Karl turns around, but Jay stops him before he gets far.287
JAY288
Maybe you can be of some help.289
KARL290
Of course, what can I do for you?291
JAY292
I need to find a pair of wedding rings. Something affordable, but elegant.293
KARL294
Are you getting married?295
JAY296
I’m sorry?297
(A beat)298
Oh, no, my best friend is.299
Karl leads Jay to a different case, filled with simple gold rings. He unlocks the case and removes a few of the least expensive bands. Jay slips one on absent-mindedly.300
KARL301
Wish it were you?302
JAY303
A boy can dream, can’t he?304
KARL305
Actually, you’ve got a very nice one on. How do you like it?306
JAY307
It’s perfect.308
KARL309
You’ll make your friend proud. Now what about for the lucky lady?310
Jay tries a few rings on his pinky finger. After admiring one with a tiny diamond, he motions Karl that he has chosen. Jay pays by cheque and leaves quickly, calling over his shoulder.311
JAY312
Thank you for all your help!313
Karl smiles as Jay climbs into a small red Honda.314
FADE OUT315
EXT. DUSTY ORCHARD. AFTERNOON.316
FADE IN317
Jay parks his car and runs to the gazebo where everyone is waiting. He hugs Sarah.318
JAY319
You look beautiful.320
SARAH321
Thank you.322
MICHAEL323
Did you get them?324
Jay shows the two boxes in his pocket and winks at Michael. Michael gives a sigh of relief. The 325
JUSTICE OF THE PEACE, young, male, motions for the rings. Jay hands him the boxes.326
JUSTICE OF THE PEACE327
Are we ready?328
MICHAEL329
Definitely.330
Michael, Jay, and Megan take their places under the gazebo. Sarah stands at the end of the pathway with her father. A piano plays the Wedding March and she begins the slow walk toward the gazebo. Her father breaks off and the music dies down as she enters the shade.331
JUSTICE OF THE PEACE332
We are gathered here today to witness the joining of Michael Morgan and Sarah Sone in co-333
operative matrimony. If I may see the marriage contract at this time, we shall proceed.334
SARAH335
I don’t have it.336
MICHAEL337
What do you mean? We dealt with this months ago!338
SARAH339
I left it at home.340
MICHAEL341
We can go get it, or just go on anyway and show it after.342
(A beat)343
There must be something we can do.344
SARAH345
No.346
MEGAN347
What’s going on, hun?348
SARAH349
What’s going on? I’ll tell you what’s going on. I’m not ready to get married, not yet. I’m only 16! This is too much, Michael.350
Michael is speechless with eyes wide open. Sarah runs back down the pathway.351
JAY352
Wait!353
Sarah waits for Jay to catch up. They take hands and run toward Jay’s car. Michael calls after them with tears in his eyes.354
MICHAEL355
But you promised me, Jay! You said this wasn’t a soap opera!356
