Lunar Magic

Lunar Magic
Prologue
The Moon is a Demon Witch. One that controls the waves. In her own domain, she is undefeatable, especially at night when her powers are waxing, but when they are waning she looses her power. She is an Elemental, therefore the Elemental Demon Witch. The most powerful marine Demons bow down before her and worship her as Queen of the Aqua World. The Demons will dance all night to favour this Queen. But at Dawn, they will run. For the power of the Sun is far greater than any in the Universe yet created. An unyielding power that will make all bow down and worship. The Moon wanted this power, the power to rule the Universe. That is why she summoned her most powerful Demons to her command. For from that day on, her aim was to take control of the Power. Only the SunGeminites stood in her way. But she had a plan. One that would help her rise to power.

“How has the plan gone so far?” snapped the Moon impatiently.
“Very nearly finished, My Queen.” replied a silver Demon with charisma. “The Sun has weakened greatly, and the attack is only a few days away. With luck on our side the SunGeminites will have lost all their powers and will be defenceless to our ‘greater cause’.”
The Moon chuckled dryly. “Of course, there is no way of escape?”
“Of course not, my Queen. I have secured the city. They think that I’m protecting them, the little idiots.” The silver Demon smiled in glee.
“Good. Make sure t his operation goes ahead and that there are no escapees, got that?”
“Yes, my Queen.”
“I am waiting.”

Chapter One
Memory
Lytera floated down the wave and up the next, while the piece of driftwood on which she clung to, sank lower. Salt water splashed against her face but she felt nothing. With her eyes closed, she was trying to recall her memories but they would not show themselves from the murky depths of her mind. A white shape floated semi-consciously around the driftwood then hesitantly dived onto Lytera’s head. Her eyes snapped open then closed in the realisation that it was her SunSpirit, Lythin. Her memories had been blurred but they were not clearing as they usually did. She could remember a scream and falling then a sudden burst of light that chased way her other memories. It was no use. She couldn’t remember her memories.
She turned her mind to the problem at hand. Firstly, she was stranded in the middle of the ocean (that she could see). Secondly, she couldn’t recall her memories even her own name. Of course, she remembered that the white dove was her SunSpirit but, the only problem with that was that she didn’t know what a SunSpirit was. She looked down fondly at the dove that was resting next to her hands and felt as though the dove was part of her. She gazed into the distance and wondered what had befallen her. Why was she clinging desperately to a piece of driftwood in the middle of the ocean?
She tried to hoist herself up onto the piece of driftwood so that she would be more comfortable but found that she was unable to just that as her hands were bound to the wood in a rope of soft silver flesh. She looked at the rope in a confused way. Why would someone bind her to the wooden plank? As she looked at the rope, a beam of white light shot out of her eyes. The light hit the rope and cut it through. Lytera lifted herself up onto the plank and sat comfortably on the wooden surface. Immediately the driftwood rose into the air and turned rotated. Then it gracefully skimmed the ocean waves, heading off into the distance.

The Moon looked down at the SunGeminite with amusement that changed to irritation as the SunGeminite cut the rope and made the driftwood rise into the air. The guards located around the room shrank into the shadows. They knew that the Moon was about to break into chaotic rage.
“Sylar!” she bellowed. “I thought that we had arranged to wipe the young SunGeminite’s memory, so why is she using her powers?”
A Silver Demon came forth from the shadows with an expression of pain and agony.
“I do not know, My Queen, but I have heard of powers that come naturally to the user, with him or her just thinking of something that could make things better. But this is extremely rare. The Mind Wipe is supposed to take away powers… it has never failed us before!”
“I don’t care about past happenings. I want to know why this has happened now!”
“Of course, My Queen!” and Sylar scuttles away, shouting orders left and right. The guards passed down the orders to the summoned demons, hen returned to their posts.

Lytera was dazzled by this new form of transport. Of course, she knew nothing of how it had been conjured. She was still confused and her memories were still muddles but, in the given circumstances, she was enjoying herself.
Her eyes strained against the rushing wind as she tried to see through half-shut-eye-lids. She saw through the wind for a moment and then they closed again. She was sure that she had seen land. She wished that she could look again but the driftwood wasn’t letting her, rushing at the speed it was. As she wished this a green orb formed around her eyes, stopping the wind from hurting her eyes. Through the green she saw land, an island with huge mountains and luscious forests and tropical jungles that surround the island beaches. Lytera was thrilled.
A few minutes later, the driftwood floated onto the beach and landed with a graceful swoop. Lytera stepped off and turned to thank it but it was gone. Out of the corner of her eye she saw a flicker and then it was gone. Lytera made no rush moving towards the jungle and looked around in doing so. Up, over the treetops she could see a cave at the base of one of the mountains. She decided that was the best place to sleep the night.
As she made her way though the jungle, all manner of new sounds reached her ears. She had a feeling that she had heard them before but could not be sure in her current state. Animals of all shape and size came to the edge of the leaves to pear at her. After following at a distance they recognised that she would not hurt them and came up beside her. There was a huge animal that lumbered along beside her, broad shoulders moving in rhythm to her pacing. Then there was a large brown and white bird and a rough-looking dog with huge fangs. The lumbering creature ran in front of Lytera and stopped, lowered his back and waited. Lytera hesitated then hopped onto the creature’s back. The creature started moving then bounding up the hill. Then bird and dog followed and in no time at all, they were at the cave. The creatures had somehow known where she was headed.
Inside the cave it was dark, so dark that Lytera was forced to wait until her eyes adjusted to the dim. As here eyes adjusted, she felt a cool waft of air, running through the cave. There must be another way out, she thought. Her eyes adjusted to the light and she was pleased to see a rough bed of straw and a ring of a passed fire. Someone has already been here, she thought. Maybe, when they come back they will bring food. She went over to the straw and smelt it. It smelt of someone that she knew… she could just not remember.
She realised that the animals that had followed her were waiting at the door. She went over to them. They stood still, not fearing her but gazing at the rocky wall. Lytera turned to face it. On the wall there were huge scars that formed letters. The writing filled her mind and her neck snapped straight. She remembered that writing. It was her brother’s. Memories flooded her mind and she fell to the floor.
Chapter Two
Freedom
She remembered the attack on her ship that was destined for one of the StarGeminite Clans. There were MoonDemons that had dragged away her brother, Latis and her guardian, Staron and how she had fallen off the ship to the perils of the ocean. This was a dangerous move as the Moon controlled the ocean and even though it was day, the Moon could have easily drowned her or sent Demons to kill her. Or maybe she was keeping her for amusement so that when she finally killed her, she would just laugh. Now she knew why the driftwood had made the journey easy for her. She had used Light Magic accidentally.
She gazed at the writing that had been carved into the wall. It had been cut with Silent Light, a light that could burn through most things quietly. She was sure that the writing was her brother’s. The writing said:
Lytera,
Taken by MoonDemons. Staron with me. At Mountain. Southern side. Am OK.
She looked at the writing forlornly and her emotions boiled up inside her. She stood there stiffly then suddenly became brisk. Using Light Magic she lit up the cave and saw at the back a gap in the rocks. That was where the wafts of air were coming from. She went over to it and looked closely at the gap. It was quite small, but big enough for herself to crouch in and even crawl. The gap sloped downwards and to the south and turned into a tunnel. Then it turned around a bend and Lytera could see no more.
Lytera made her way back to the straw bed and lay down. The animals lay down around her and Lythin curled around her neck. She listened as the shadows grew long and listened as the sound of the birds singing died away. She felt calm knowing that her brother and guardian were alright. The Moon came up and hung in the sky. It is so beautiful, Lytera thought. So, so beautiful… She came awake with a start. The Moon. It was up in the sky. That meant that the Moon was in power.
Lytera was up in a start. The Moon must know where she was already. Suddenly she heard the cackle of Demons. Then she saw them. They were crawling up the side of the Mountain. She saw that they were having trouble and wondered why she hadn’t had any. Then she remembered the bear and with a jolt the animals that had followed her. She saw them at the edge of the cave watching the Demons with what seemed like amusement. Suddenly, the bird launched into the sky and the bear and dog bounded down the mountain. Lytera watched in awe as they attacked the Demons with vicious blows. She gathered her wits about her and started sending war spells down the mountain at the Demons.
Most of the Demons simply fell of but a few clung on grimly climbing onwards. The bear swept off the first wave with his mighty forepaws while the dog came from behind and ripped off the stragglers with its canines. The bird carried off Demons in the middle ranks and Lytera still blasted war spells at the oncoming Demons. But there were too many as Lytera knew. She looked for escape options and found none. She looked back inside the cave and caught sight of the gap. Using Light Magic she changed her musical voice to the harsh voice of an animal. She told them that there was a tunnel at the back of the cave that led southwards. She would take the dog while the bird and bear met up with them at the south Mountain. The animals responded as if it were everyday a person spoke to them and obeyed immediately. The dog slithered between the Demons while the bear lumbered off and the bird shrieked and wheeled around in the sky. Lytera threw a few last spells and ran to the gap while the dog scampered behind her.
Inside the tunnel Lytera turned and sealed the gap just in time. The Demons howled in frustration as they could not pass through the thick layer of light. One Demon tried to thrust its hand through but as its skin touched the light it dissolved into dust. Lytera hurried along the passage with the dog at her heels. She lit it up as she passed through it and saw that the tunnel was incredibly old. It had niches, ditches and even crevices. The dog sniffed around but kept up with Lytera. Shortly the tunnel started sloping upwards and Lytera stopped for a breath, her breathing hard and ragged. She could hear her own heart beating quickly in her chest. She started off again this time with more speed and cast a spell around her to lift herself up, hovering above the ground by a few inches. This made walking extremely easy as there were no ditches or sudden drops to avoid.
Soon she had arrived at the exit and looked out at a vast chasm and at the bottom there were little shapes moving about. She could make out a sort of glow around two of the figures. That glow was familiar to Lytera and she cried out, her voice echoing around the chasm. They were her brother’s and guardian’s, and now, looking more closely, she could see that they were unable to move. Then she caught sight off the bird, wheeling above her. It was the same one that she had directed to come to the end of the passage. Then the bear came into view, watching (from the bottom of the chasm) her brother and guardian. The bird then wheeled down and Lytera, startled, jumped aside as the bird hovered in front of her. She stumbled and fell off the edge of the narrow cleft. The dog jumped after her and she looked up at the advancing shadow in bewilderment
The bird swooped down underneath her and she landed softly with the dog landing beside her. Then they were off soaring down, down towards her brother. As she caught up with herself she realised that there would be guards, stopping her freeing her brother. Suddenly, she heard a roar and looking down saw that the bear had engaged battle with the MoonDemons. The bird shrieked and she was thrown backwards as the bird corkscrewed sideways to avoid a flying rock. Lytera realised that they were in the middle of a battle and needed to reach the ground, fast.
After a few more hurled rocks, they reached the ground and were immediately set upon by MoonDemons. Lytera ran to the wall of the far side of the chasm and made a shield spell. A sphere enveloped Lytera and she advanced towards the ranks of MoonDemons. The bear was still pulverising the MoonDemons with mighty swipes of his forepaws while his hind legs were kicking out at all angles, sending Demons right and left, flying through the air. The bird caught one of the rocks that had been hurled up by the Demons and hurled it straight back, squashing the Demons that had thrown it. Her brother and Staron were struggling violently against there chains but to Lytera’s surprise, they did not use magic.
Lytera pushed through the ranks, the MoonDemons unable to touch her through her shield and reached her brother. She saw why they were unable to use magic as their magic had been cut off. There was sheen of dark magic that covered her brother and guardian.
“Lytera, hurry,” mumbled Latis.
“Coming,” she replied. She turned her attention off the advancing Demons and to the matter at hand. Using a Silent Light, she cut through there chains and then used a cleansing charm to return their magic. Immediately they turned and faced the Demons, casting spells all over them. Staron called the bird down lower and told the dog and bear to retreat back to the entrance. As the bird swept down to fly them to safety Staron used a levitating charm and they rose up into the air, a good few meters or so. The bird swooped narrowly underneath them and they rose up and away from the jeopardy of the chasm floor. Reaching the passage that the bear and dog had taken out they flew through, overtaking the bear and dog. Then they were outside and back in the Moon’s eerie light. They flew away from the mountain climbing higher and looked down. The Island was spread out like a map and they could see everything. Staron pointed to a lagoon on the eastern side.
“We should make for that,” he shouted over the wind. “It should make a good shelter for the night.” The bird catching his idea alighted on the beach next to the lagoon and they hopped off its back. The bear and dog came trundling along, and they grunted greetings. Lytera was ecstatic.
“They have helped me ever since they followed me today. They helped when the MoonDemons attacked the first time, when I was in the cave that you had been taken to, and then just now at that battle and they’re still following. Is should ask their names,” said Lytera.
“Wait until you have explained what happened to you when we saw you fall off the ship.” said Staron. “Oh, and by the way, it’s good to see that you’re safe.”
“Yes, it is,” agreed Latis. The siblings embraced then Lytera pulled her self together.
“I’ll start when I regained consciousness, down in the Earth Sea.” She said.
“The Earth Sea- How did you fall off the ship into the Earth Sea?” said Latis.
“I’ll explain…” said Lytera and then the exchanging of stories began.

Chapter Three
Travel
In the morning, Lytera woke to enjoy the singing of the birds. She looked back to the night before and to the explaining and how surprised Staron and Latis had been at the discovery of the fall into the Earth Sea. They had told her that while she had fallen, they had been taken captive by the Moon’s right hand man, Sylar. They had been taken to the cave and while the Demons were putting the magic stopper spell on, Latis had quickly cut a message into the wall. He had overheard the guards saying that they were to be transported to the Southern Mountain and had added that into his message as well. Then they had been taken and were found by Lytera. Lytera had also asked the animals their names and found out that the bear was called Sagao, the bird Hurriken and the dog Lupus.
Staron had been gone since she woke up, so Lytera gently shook Latis into wakefulness. He yawned and stretched then sat up and jumped up as Lupus’ slimy tongue climbed down the back of his neck.
“Lupus, stop!” laughed Latis. “Get off me!”
Lupus reproachfully got off Latis then his ears stood up on end and his tail wagged. There was a swirl of leaves and the siblings were forced to sit down as Staron came into being. His clothes were neat and tidy and he showed no signs that he had just experienced light travel, an extremely difficult achievement for a StarGeminite, but a mere trifle for a SunGeminite.

    Enjoyable

I really liked the poetic imagery of the sea and the moon. Great great job on that. Shades of Francesca Lia Block, almost.

I would have enjoyed reading the completed story. Why was she tied down and why did she feel pain when the ropes were cut? Very original content, there, that I would like to see explained.

Great job with this. Finish it!
