The people on the street walked quickly, too busy in their daily trivialities to look properly at one another. If someone bumped into someone else a hurried apology escaped from between tightly closed lips, but eye contact was never made. Children did not walk through this part of town alone, in fact it was rare to see a child at all here, and if one was seen they were being dragged along by a hasty adult.
Teenagers slunk in doorways, or stood poised directly on the curb, staring threateningly into cars. No one looked up, and so no one noticed that three stories above, on a thin ledge, a small figure stood poised over the drop like the teenagers over the road. A little closer to the figure one would be able to make out that it was female, and young. Her approximate age was indeterminable, and her features were rather normal. What was obvious about her was her expression; intense remorse, with an even more intense desire to break free from the pattern that had caused her remorse.
Her hands were clenched at her sides, and one could see her legs were shaking with fear and emotion, just as her face was steady and decided. Mouth curved into an ugly frown, and eyes wide with what could be surprise, anger, pain, or all of the above. As a small breeze came down from the grey sky her hair was caught up and danced around her face, grabbing at her mouth and nose, clinging to her eyes. When the wind died down her eyes were still closed.
Her face seemed to be changing, and slowly she let the next little gust of wind push her further towards the edge. Anyone close enough could see that her mouth was relaxed now and her fingers had unfolded from their steely grip. The eyelids fluttered, and wind knocked the standing figure from her perch. Down the suddenly rag doll like creature fell, and shattered on the cement.
The people passing below made it impossible at first to see where she had fallen. But as the crowds thinned out, perhaps sensing this place was not alright, the bare pavement was made visible.
