Kismet
Suellen had been cursed from birth. She knew it and everyone else did as well. The poor girl would trip over her own feet and cause problems for anyone near her. All through school, teachers made bets on who would get her and how long it would be before they would break a leg. It had become a joke, and Suellen was the butt of it. She had no friends, and she actually didn’t want any for fear that they might drop dear from being around her.
A gangly young girl, Suellen had always been a little awkward and never seemed to have any luck at all. She was not considered pretty with her glasses, long dark hair with bangs, and braces on her teeth. Very much alone, she had learned to think not of those who made fun of her, and they found it frustrating. But she continued in her clumsiness. If something was going to happen, it always happened when Suellen was around, and everyone was leery of her. Until…
Lucas came upon the scene along about the sixth grade, and Suellen was smitten. He was as lanky as she, and the two seemed to be perfectly suited. Lucas had braces on his teeth as well and fell over his feet as often as she.
Young Lucas was smitten the moment he laid eyes on Suellen, and she blushed as his eyes gazed upon her and made her smile. The two went through their days tripping over each other and spilling their milk at lunch hour, and neither of them noticed that the other kids laughed at them. The two had found their soul mates.
Lucas had decided that he should meet her family, so Suellen asked her parents if he could visit. They allowed him, of course. When Saturday came, Lucas was at the front door of Suellen’s home two hours early with flowers behind his back. Her father answered the door and was nearly laid onto the floor when Lucas fell over the stoop and right into his arms. This did not settle well with Suellen’s father, but he accepted the boy just the same. He asked the young man in and allowed him to sit and wait in the living room while Mother got Suellen. She was so excited that she had started readying herself early—two hours to be exact. Yes, the two were soul mates.
The two young kids sat on the porch swing talking for several hours and learned everything about each other. They had each found someone with whom they could spend time with and not be concerned about others. From then on they would not feel alone or lonely—which they both considered different feelings.
Suddenly there was a lull in their conversation, a somehow tense silence for the two of them, and he decided to put his arm around Suellen. She leaned toward him as if it were natural for her. Luke leaned around to kiss her, but suddenly pitched headlong off the porch swing pulling her along with him. Yes, this was kismet.
