Siren

Meara stood watching the tide roll in. Wave after wave it draws ever closer, ready to ensnare. She feels an increasing desire to allow the waters to engulf her, to carry her away to the unknown depths of the ocean floor.

Delicate voices fill her mind, calling out for her to join them to become whole with the sea once more. Fear of that unknown keeps her rooted.

A swell collides with the sand at her feet nipping her bare toes. Glancing down, she watches as the wave withdraws back into its watery home. Tears stream down her cheeks as the sight leaves her feeling strangely bereft. Another rolls up poised to crash upon the shore. She observes in awe as it lingers just above the surface, suspended as though time has stood still.

The setting sun and rising of the moon together present a reddish halo that surrounds the suspended wave enhancing the already ethereal scene. Meara relishes in the beauty unfolding. Fear no longer a restraint. Her tears dry up replaced by a smile of joy and enlightenment.

Home that is what the waters are for her, a home. She raises her hands toward the sky breathing deep she tastes the salty air that swirls around her in a misty cloak. She gives in to the call.

The wave now released from its invisible tether falls forward ensnaring her.

Within its folds, Meara is carried away to where she once belonged and is now returned, to the aquatic world of her ancestors. For you see, Meara is of the sea. She is the siren.

Being my namesake, I just had to read this. Your description was beautiful and I could see the ocean. What I couldn't image was the sirens. I couldn't hear them. Were their song haunting and low? Or inviting and relaxing? And the smell? Could she smell the salt and the seaweed? Did it smell like home? Etc....
Another question I had was in many myths and stories the siren's song is only attractive to males, so why would it work on this girl? Is it because she was once one of them? Also how did she become human?
I really did like your story and I only point these out to help your expand and grow.
