Hometown Heroes

as they stand side by side1

daring not look away2

planning for a new tomorrow3

and on this very last day4

not really understanding5

why it began6

and was now over7

yet, somehow, together they had stayed8

traveling to a far horizon9

where the sunset was like a weight on their backs10

and all the things they gained11

guided them on12

and tantalized their needs13

and glorified their deeds14

in this far away place15

now, returning to their homeland16

these soldier's jobs were done17

together they had come18

from a small town19

and now they were20

forever bound
21

by the things they had 22

seen23

and done24

on this sandy soil25

returning as heroes26

but feeling like zeroes 27

they stand side by side28

not daring to look back29

was it a war ?30

or a political kill?31

either way 32

they had their fill33

thanks so much for your comments on this piece...being an oldgal , I remember the Vietnam War as well as Desert Storm and our present conflict...war changes everyone...there are rarely any winners only altered personalities going on with life...may sound a littel pessimistic, but the proof is in the survivors...thanks for reading...freda

This is very deep. My friend's older brother was in the marines and when he came back from Iraq, my friend said he'd totally changed. I couldn't even imagine what the solders go through. wonderful write, great job.
