In a tragic boating accident this afternoon three post graduate students at New York University drowned when their experimental boat, a large salad bowl capsized in rough waters just outside the harbor.1
The men, Simple Simon, Jack Sprat and Tom Tom, son of Harry Tom, Dean of the school of Piping, were reportedly drinking heavily at a downtown bar all afternoon when the decision was made to go to sea in a bowl.2
When Dean Tom was interviewed after hearing the news of his sons untimely death, he told this reporter, "Tom was a strange boy. Never piped a note as long as he lived. Too bad, but the wife and I were shelling out a lot of tuition for that boy, and I suppose God knows what's best.3

very good
What a wonderful tale. From the title I thought we might be getting rub-a-dub-dub. Really enjoyed the perspective from the reporter.
Very well done.

LOL!! "If the bowl had been stronger, my tale would be longer".
Journalism background somewhere in your checkered past? Well written in a reporter's style. Cleverly done as well.

Another good one. 'claps loudly'
Not sure I should be applauding such a tragic accident.
