The Last Man Standing

"Love, don't let me go!" she cries. Arms outstreched, she looks up from the depths below her. There is nothing but an infinite ocean. His grip on her hand hurts, so tight, but she is light at least. He tries to pull her up again, without falling himself. He can not balance so well on a square foot of space. She pulls one foot up and then the other, he tries desperately to grab onto the smooth rusty rock behind him. It is a giant wall, and they are on the only ledge in infinite space. They breathe sighs of relief, and love. They look into eachother's eyes and talk long into the night. If there was night. There is only everlasting twilight, the sea and sky blend a deep blue, the sky covered forever by clouds that never rain. Existance here is not much, but is it better than jumping into that ocean? He asks himself sometimes when she's asleep with her soft head against his chest. He looks out to the sea, trying to see something. The landscape remains unchanged, but he is not alone. He knows he will always be with her.

He had a dream that he fell into the ocean, screaming, and she was shouting something he couldn't hear. When he awoke she was gone! Forever. He is destined to spend an eternity alone. NOOOOO!!! he yells and his cry reverberates of the wall behind him and falls into the sea unheard. The waves mock him, mocking his salty tears as they fall down and join the ocean. He looks out towards the horizon, if only he could see her, but the ocean has swallowed her body forever. Days go by and then weeks. Existance becomes a little less pleasant. "What is it I've been existing for anyway?" He stands on that square foot of space, looking down and up, theres no escape, so will he wait or jump. He imagines that he could fly, but where would he go? He could mock the ocean, jump and not die. He is intensly alone. The last thing alive on earth. A month goes by and without her his thoughts can no longer go so very far from that square foot of space. There is no longer glory in being the last one alive, no one knows he is alive, there is no one to know.

One day he feels at peace, as he looks into the sea, it is calming. Peace calls out to him from the depths beneath the depths. An end to pain and existance, an end to thought. He does not jump, he just steps over the edge, just a step, and suddenly he is falling the wind rushes through his hair and the ocean comes to greet him. The ocean, he saw, was calm just before he died.
