I back as far away as my bed will allow.1
"No way," I say in a panicky whisper. "No way..."2
"Please," begs Hawk. "You must believe me."3
"I-" I break off. "I can't."4
"It's not easy for me either," she points out.5
I remain silent, staring at her to find any hint of humor on her face.6
"It just can't be true," I whisper.7
There is a deafening silence between us. I examine the coat rack standing near by, just to get my mind off current events. Hawk opens her mouth to speak.8
"Please, I beg of you," she pleads.9
I walk over to the window that looks out to the ocean. I turn around a stare Hawk in the eye for what seems like hours. Then I realize it...10
"I was stupid to think you would lie about something like that," I say.11
"So you believe me?" she asks.12
"Of course," I answer, walking over to embrace my sister.13
We hug only for a moment. Then I break it up and stare at her once more.14
"How did it happen?" I ask.15
"While you were sleeping, Aidan asked me if I wanted to be like him," explains my sister. "He finally told me that he was one when I was worried about you."16
"Oh," I reply, "so he's one too then huh?"17
"Yeah," she answers.18
"What's it like?" I ask, curious. "Are you ever lonely?"19
"Not really," she says, "it's almost like before."20
"But," I add, "you won't go when I go."21
"Yeah," she admits.22
"Doesn't that scare you?" I ask. "That you'll spend eternity alone like that?"23
"Not really," she answers. "After all, I'll have Aidan with me."24
"True," I admit.25
"Would you like to become one?" she asks, "then we can be together also."26
"I don't know," I say uncertainly.27
"I won't force you," assures Hawk, "but it would be nice to know that you'll always be there."28
I give in to her. 29
"Alright," I answer, "will it hurt?"30
"Only at first," she says, "then you'll be in a deep sleep."31
"For how long?" I ask.32
"Until we've reached Mr. Kristoph's house," she says.33
"Oh," I said uncertainly.34
"You don't have to," she says with concern in her voice.35
"No," I say, "it's what I want. How is it done?"36
"I join our veins to transfer our blood into one another," she says. "The part that hurts most is me splitting your veins for the process."37
"Okay," I reply, "Let's begin."38
Slowly she slices my wrist open as well as her own. She holds her arm up to mine and our veins temporarily join for the transfer. The pain is unlike any other I've felt before. Soon after the transfer of our blood starts, I pass out from pain.39
