Old man Max

This picture touched a deep place in me.   1

I remember being homeless.. Right after my daughter was born I lost my job a Worldcom (Another story for another time) When we couldn't pay the bills we were forced to leave our apartment.. Mu daughter and I went into a women's shelter downtown.. it wasn't so bad.. It was safe.. and I was able to continue going to school.. But it was the meals that made me nervous...2

We had to go to a nearby soup kitchen to eat.. Being (at that time) barely 21 and a single mom.. I was nervous being in a crowded room with my baby and so many people I didn't know who scared me... But around Christmas time I met an old man named Max.. He was a veteran who stayed in the men's shelter across the street.. 3

He was such a nice man.. He would bring me and my daughter our meals so we wouldn't have to stand in line.. and was always there to reassure me that things would get better..4

When I was finally placed in singles housing and got my job.. I never forgot Max and even went back to the shelter to find him... But he was to sick to save.. He died a few weeks later.. I never knew of what.. I visit his grave often.. and remember the kind man that help reassure another human...5

This picture reminds me of Max, and I know this isn't a poem.. But it is a story I wanted to share with you..6

    Realtime Magic

What a wonderful story, Lilli. You've touched my heart with this one. You were at the "right" place at the right time, to make Max feel needed - and perhaps he remembered you, too, until the end.

Sorrow is never without purpose. You've shown us a reminder of the Love of God - amongst the humble He walks, disguised as a homeless, for our Home is elsewhere.

May you carry on with courage on your journey. You are special and so is your daughter. It made me think of another Mother and another Child, being homeless in a world of rejection.

    Hugs.

    Myra

I'm glad that someone was there for you when you needed them. God takes on many faces, and maybe He was there with you that day, to help you through. Thank you for telling me the story about the 13 steps. I would be interested in seeing a picture and knowing more about the angel. Please let me know.

    spiritually uplifting!

I liked this. Very uplifting, indeed. When someone is in the same boat as you, so to speak, and yet takes the time to tell you that you and yours will be all right... great story here, and I am glad that you have since made to better places!

It's okay--I didn't ask for a poem! This is actually a STORY CONTEST... But I changed the rules because pratically EVERYONE did poems (or so it seemed). Anyway, thanks for sharing! I can't say too much about this, besides the fact it WAS "sad and uplifting" since it really happened and you were just writing about what happened. Good work.

Ooh, also--your name is Lilli? Hehe, my friend's name is Lily (the one who's in collaberation in this)... I like the spelling.

This is very up lifting. But sad at the same time. Man taking out the time to help a fellow man. With deeds or just a word of encouragement. You did this gentleman justice. I'm sure that he is up in heaven smiling down upon you and your little girl.
    This was wonderful, Lilli

    Blessed be,
