Words filled the page like an endless waterfall, flowing steadily until every line was painted in black ink. She wrote the letter that described every memory they ever shared, and every conversation they ever held in secrecy. Maybe this would finally be good enough for her, the one who completely shut her out of her life for over a year.
“I can’t take this anymore.” She grumbled, followed by a sigh as she stuck the letter in a blue envelope. Walking out of her house towards her little white car, she took a deep breath and braced herself for what was to come.
When she got to her destination, the brick house stood tall, hovering over her with confidence, creating shadows all around. Gulping, she ran to the door, rang the bell and awaited an answer. A short blonde haired girl answered the door of the large brick house, yet she didn’t stand as tall. Anna handed her the thick blue envelope when she answered.
The girl looked at it for a moment; quizzically before asking her if she wanted to come in.
“No thanks. Just read.” Her answer was short, and she was fighting back tears.
The girl looked down and saw the beautiful writing in italics, “To Samantha, from an old friend, Anna.”
As tears filled Anna’s eyes, she struggled to swallow, her throat tightening. “I have to go.”
Anna began walking away down the long path that seemed endless, in hopes of finally reaching her car, the leaves crumbling under her feet. Hopping in the car and doing up her seatbelt, she sighed and took a deep breath, stalling for time.
Looking back, she saw Sam on her front porch, the door wide open, the wind blowing leaves in to her tall, perfect house. Sam was on her knees crying loudly, the letter in her shaking hands. Fighting back the tears, Anna did what she had to do. She drove away.
