Trapped in Time

Vacation had finally arrived and I had plans. I was going to go sight seeing out west. I had packed the night before, so that I would be ready the next morning. I had estimated it to be a long drive, but I was all for it and knew it was going to be worth my time. My destination was awaiting my arrival. 1

Day three of my expedition had now come upon me; I had just started to enter an undersized town when my car ran out of gas. I was unsuccessful when I tried to start it, and the engine had refused to turn over. When I glanced at the needle it was on E, my heart began to beat rapidly and I was terrified. I am not the sort of person that enjoys being stranded in unfamiliar places; I hurriedly got out of the car and began to search for a communication device of some class. 2

The town was extremely quiet which worried me. I recollect hearing the howling of the wind as it whipped around the corners of the buildings. I also observed a lot of banging that sounded like a set of drums. But as I rounded a corner, my heart had stopped and hung in my throat, until I saw a door opening and closing with the mere help of the rapid wind. 3

After wandering around in fear, I began to question, “Where is everyone?” “ I need help and I need to get out of here.” These were the only thoughts running through my mind the entire time that I was look intently for help and a way out. 4

When my legs tired, I decided to enter the doors to an ancient mercantile store. No one was in sight, so I called out in panic, “Is someone here, anyone?” When I received no answer, I began to look around. There was dust and cobwebs everywhere, I looked. I began to wonder if this town was abandoned. 5

When I walked back outside, I thought I had the solution to a few of the questions I was contemplating. I heard a sudden rush of music and people talking loud. At first I thought that I was imagining it all, but I knew I couldn’t be. The wind slowly helped me across the gravel road. 6

When I reached the other side of the road, I entered the saloon where I had thought all the noise was coming from. Shortly after I was in the building I was approached with a sudden surprise. The room was completely empty and all the noise I heard slowly faded away with the wind. 7

I began to brush the cobwebs off my clothes, but soon felt a wintry chill going through my spine. It wasn’t long after I felt icy fingers grip around my arm. I cautiously turned my head, but no one was there. My heart began to beat faster and faster, I didn’t know what to do. I called out “somebody, anybody, help me!” The grip on my arm suddenly got tighter and began to pull me up a narrow flight of dusty stairs to the hallway above the bar. The icy hands were now gripping onto my neck. The bar beneath me had instantly come alive as I was forced to look over the railing.8

As I looked down the noise I had heard before came back in the blink of an eye. I knew I couldn’t have been imagining it all when I was standing across the road that short time ago. The people beneath me were pointing and shouting up towards me “hang her, hang her.” 9

The words gave me an eerie feeling throughout my whole body. Suddenly, I saw a rope in the corner of my eye floating through the air towards me. I looked up, and noticed that it was connected to a ceiling beam. I instinctively tried to get away, but whoever was clinging to me, would not let loose. 10

I soon felt the frosty hands sliding the noose around my neck. Shortly after, I felt my body turn to rubber as I was forced over the edge of the rail towards the bar below.11

When everything had come back into focus, I gazed up from the bar beneath and observed my body as it dangled in the air. As I was looking up I was thinking to myself, now I am free, because now I am the same as everyone else in this calm peaceful town.12

Chilling. The last sentence really makes the story. Certainly gives a whole new meaning to the term "ghost town." ...Okay, bad joke.
