Olivia was still screaming when Utah and her other friends arrived at medical; Sumi’s plan had taken an unfortunate turn, for Olivia anyway. The nurse examined Olivia’s leg, “A minor sprain.” The nurse concluded, smiling softly to the girls who had crowded her office. “A what!” Olivia screamed, shaking her legs furiously before stopping to scream and shout about the pain. “Don’t complain Olivia.” Utah said, comforting her friend, “At least you haven’t broken anything. “I suppose.” Olivia replied as the nurse wrapped a blue bandage around Olivia’s left leg. “How did this happen anyway, girls, didn’t class begin half an hour ago?” The nurse asked, patting Utah’s head and then slowly standing up. “Um, well, it was…” Utah began, trying to think of an excuse. “It was Sumi.” Olivia cleverly interrupted, “She had hidden all of our stuff up high in the branches of the oak, we had to get them back.” Olivia continued, a smile creeping up onto her face and rearranging her crumpled forehead as she forgot what pain was. “Sumi, you say.” The nurse said to herself as if trying to remember whom Sumi was, “So, fallen out with little Sumi-Chan then?” The nurse finally asked, sitting herself down on her chair, and admiring her pretty embroidered silk which she was busy sewing, since business in the medical room, was, not required as frequently as one would like. “I’m afraid, she betrayed me long ago, nurse.” Olivia said, looking closely at the nurse’s facial features.
“Oh, how, excellent, I suppose that is why you like to lie about her, yes?” The nurse asked, smiling, she knew for a fact that Sumi was in class, no evidence to prove Sumi was even involved. “No, Olivia does not lie.” Utah protested, quietly, looking at Olivia before continuing, “Sumi is a horrible retch, she should be punished, but instead she gets away with teasing us.”
“Right, well, I suppose you naughty girls should be getting back to your lessons, I will be sure to investigate this incident further, bye-bye girls.” The nurse finally said, eager to get back to sewing. “What strange creatures these young girls are.” The nurse said to herself, after Olivia’s friends had gone.
“Who does that nurse think she is? Questioning your reliability, how could she, Olivia?” Asked one of the girls, who felt quite strongly about the human ideals and fair trials or right. “Shush, Maya, it doesn’t matter.” Olivia said, limping into the classroom. “No teacher, how strange.” Utah said, looking around the room.
“Ah, ye be back from ye travels, old peasants of thine!” Sumi exclaimed, “I had begun to wonder where you had got to.” She continued, moving her books from her graffiti covered desk and climbing up onto it. “I see you had a few injuries.” Yiskah commented, looking at Olivia’s leg, “Nothing to do with Sumi, I hope.” Yiskah said, very quietly, hoping no one would notice. Yukiko giggled, then stopped, she could see the shadow of a tall man, dangling menacingly on the door, “Sensei!” Yukiko screamed, causing the whole contents of the class to stop throwing paper airplanes, and turn round to stare as her.
“Class!” Kane-Sensei said, walking into the classroom, watching the children run and scuttle to hide behind their desks. “Sorry, I was late, having fun, Sumi? How have the class been?” He asked, looking at Sumi, she was still standing on her desk. “They’ve been great, we’ve all been great, especially Olivia’s group, they had some fun, by the oak tree.” Sumi replied, smiling and looking towards Olivia, ‘That dirty urchin.’ Olivia thought, wondering why Kane-Sensei would allow the likes of her to watch the class for him. “Oh really.” Kane-Sensei said, thoughtfully surveying the class, “I think we should continue our work with triangles, don’t you, Yiskah?” He asked, noticing she was still hard at work proving her sectors theory. “Why, yes, sir. So we should.” She said, looking up from her work as Sumi got down from the desk and sat on her seat, a brimming smile crossed both of their faces at that moment as the class set back to almost silent working. “As for you, Olivia, I’ll see you at lunch time detention.” Kane-Sensei smiled, opened his briefcase and brought out his laptop, the initials S.K scrawled in Sumi’s handwriting all over the cover.
