Contrary to popular belief, the dark ages were well lit. The later Middle Ages had good education and such, but before that some council didn’t let people read pagan stuff, effectively stopping learning. The concept of the dark ages as a time during which learning was hibernating or stopped is wrong, and was proved so fifty years ago.
Everybody blames the church for all of this stuff, but they were wrong, because of unsubstantiated evidence. ‘The Dark Ages’ is a pejorative term used against the church, because apparently everybody hates the church. There isn’t really any conflict between science and religion.
While Rome’s decline made stuff bad, it was more of a shift in power structure that the common or peasant population might not have noticed or cared a heck of a lot about. Anyway, most of the atrocities (like witch hunts) happened later, during the ‘enlightened’ ages.
During the ‘dark ages’, If Leonardo of Pisa hadn’t brought Indian numerals, we would all have gone crazy in MCIXII known better as 1998. Seriously joyful guys. Also, the horse collar, horse shoe, and heavy plow were invented, as well as the famous and slightly useful movable type press. The agricultural stuffs helped reduce risk of major famines.
