White Pants and Frisbee Don't Mix

1

It was a pretty April day that I decided to wear my new white "Dittos" for the first time. You must understand that I worked hard and searched even harder to find those white pants. They weren't the saddle-back one...just the plain ones. 2

Here I was all decked out in my white pants, a light blue shirt with a cute kitten on the front and one of those light blue satin jackets that were all the rage. My hair was pulled back in one of those perky ponytails. Honey, I looked good, but I digress.3

School was the same old same old. I couldn't wait until lunchtime. My friend Janet and I had a standing date out in the field; where we would play Frisbee through lunch. Finally lunch came and both of us trouped out to the field. Janet pulled out that red Frisbee that had seen better days. We started out just tossing it back and forth to one another just to warm up.  Gradually we started throwing that Frisbee longer and harder. We had that red disk flying up to 30 feet. Laughing at each other when we couldn't catch each others "long bombs".4

Unbeknownst to us; I was headed into a section of the field that the maintenance people had just finished watering. Still laughing and tossing that red Frisbee, I headed into disaster.5

The bell had rang  just as Janet had given the Frisbee one last hard throw...knowing that I would have to run hard and fast if I were to catch it. Jumping up and back I caught it. Astonishment on my face, I landed. But as I landed my feet splashed down into 2 feet of standing water. With the ground so soggy and water logged, I sank to 3 feet. Muddy water splashing up and all over my new white pants. Unable to keep my balance I toppled over, landing in that water with a huge splash. Now I had water dripping from everywhere. My satin jacket now saturated and in ruins...water plastering that pretty kitten to my now totally soaked chest. To add insult to injury, Janet was standing there laughing like a loon.6

At first I was mortified, as I saw Janet laughing, I too began to see the funnier side of this. Janet reached down for my hand. With just a little tug, I pulled her into the messy mud puddle with me. We always did share everything. Why not this. Here we were both of us just sitting there laughing our fool heads off. Finally we both shook off the hilarity of the situation, getting up and reporting to the office so we could call out moms for a change of clothing.7

The principal asked us what in the world had we done to get ourselves in such a mess? We explained the situation to him. As he fought back a smile he told us:8

Nice work. I had never stories by you before today. I see that they are posted fairly recently, so maybe you haven't posted many before.

I really like the style you have taken for telling these stories. Telling this in first person and telling it in a vernacular style gives the storyteller a real voice and adds tremendously to your delivery. I really enjoyed reading it.

That is a sweet story, Willow, I haven't read anything so nice for a long time. They were different times, and I like the way you have evoked them with the costume and the game. Nicely done!

This was really good, I'm always one for a good frisbee story. I had my foot in a cast 6 times - all due to frisbee play. ah, the good old days. LOL

    Very amusing

LOL! Let me guess, it put you off wearing white pants ever again? I loved this, it reminded me of a time when I was in high school and my friend threw a baseball to me, I jumped up and back to catch it and fell down a muddy slope. I ended up in mud upto my knees! We got a laugh out of it though. Great story, thanks for sharing it.

A truly unique opinion and a memory that I'm sure you'll treasure! Thank you for sharing and reminding some of us that it's okay to laugh and play in the mud! I can't remember the last time I did that - but am planning on doing it soon! Thanks for the inspiration! libraryangel
