I lay across the bed, my boots still touching the floor, Piper curled on my chest as I run my hand lightly over his soft fur. I stare at the same spot on the ceiling that I have been staring at on a nightly basis for 3 years now. It always seems to look differant. Sometimes it's a shape, sometimes just a spot. Though it is everchanging it remains one of few constants in my hectic life. 1
As I stare at the spot I contemplate the events of that night. The girl that had escaped unnamed and the peril she had faced. Had I decided not to go to Angel's Walk tonight, what would have happened to her, and though I had a good idea, I couldn't say for sure. As my belief is that everything is predestined, had it not been myself, some other stranger would have surely been the one to save her from her situation, as it was not in her fate to be attacked this night. Had it been, they would have been able to get to her no matter what had happened. I cast the deep thoughts aside, and decided it would be better left out of my hands, though she had intrigued me with her childish features, I had no place with her. Not in this world, I was quite sure. 2
I was destined to be alone, and to live out my immortality in the same way. I would only face heartbreak should I ever come to love a mortal, for their life would be but a blink of the eye compared to mine. I am over 2000 years old, so old that I no longer keep track of it, and stopped counting my age long ago, and only getting older. Though I may not feel it physically, I bare the mental anguish that should never be known by one of my kind. A nephillim, the son of Gabriel, but only recognized as so by myself. 3
I closed my eyes, blocking the spot on the ceiling, the cat still lay sleeping on my chest, though I had long since stopped petting his soft fur. I allowed myself to fall into a slumber, and there I stayed for several hours. Dreams of the maiden quickly filled my head. First it was those pale blue eyes, those beautiful blue eyes that captured me in that moment of the rising sun. How the sun had gleamed off her brown tendrils of curl falling just so on her brow. The pale skin, the color of fresh milk. She had been beautiful. Then her full lips parted with a sweet whisper, though what she said, I had never imagined, "Your in danger..." 4
I am jarred from my peaceful slumber with a banging at the door. Piper jumps more quickly than I as I rise to my feet. I make my way to the door, placing one hand on the knob, and the other on the chain, "Who's there?" I growl, ill from being roused from such an interesting dream. 5
"Kailas. Please, open the door." the sweet and familiar voice answered. 6
I stood for a moment, recalling the name Kailas, I had heard it before, but where? Kailas... This ran through my mind as I opened the door to reveal the same young woman whom I had rescued and that I had just seen moments before in my dreams. "Come in." I said with a smile, the frantic and concerned look on her face not bothering me at all. 7
She pushed past me and walked into the living room. She looked around, while she held one arm across her stomach, the hand attached holding a bag. Her other arm was bent upward as to allow her to gnaw her fingernails. "Is this where you live?" She said, her brows furrowed, a look of disgust apparent. 8
Raising one eyebrow quizically, and in a tone of satisfaction, I answer, "Why, yes, it is. And I am quite fond of it." I walk into the living room where she stands, and begin to remove dirty laundry from the chair to allow her to sit. "So, Kailas, changed your mind, eh?" 9
"Hmm?" she said in a startled tone. "Changed my mind? OH! You mean about coming in...." she stammered. 10
"Um, yeah... That would be what I was referring to." I answer, all to aware of her nervousness. "Didn't run into the three stooges again, did you?" 11
"Who? Oh, no, not them. Do you believe in Angels?" She said all in one breath. 12
***13
You can imagine my shock when the Kailas asked me this question. It wasn't really the question in itself, it was the manner in which she asked. So quick and out of the blue. So, I answered as any red blooded american boy of my seemly age would, "I'm looking at one now." 14
"Boys, your all the same. The minute a girl goes and asks a serious question, you want to poor on the charm." She looked away, distraught, "Really, I need you to answer me. Do you believe in Angels?" 15
"Well, sure, much as the next guy I suppose. Why?" I ask, hoping that I have evaded well enough not to give myself away. 16
She plops down on the couch, Piper looks first at her, then to me, as if to say,"And just who does she think she is, Pray tell?" 17
"I had a dream, last night, well, maybe it was the night before. Anyway, the point is, that I... I dreamed you were an angel, and that I was supposed to help you in some way."18
"Well, maybe you had a touch of dislexic precognition." I offer. 19
"Of what?" she asks, a confussed look on her face. 20
"Dislexic Precognition." I go on to explain, "Perhaps you were seeing the future, and it got a little jumbled..." she still looked confussed, so I continued, "You said you dreamed that I was an angel and you were supposed to help me, well, perhaps you dreamed of your attack, and saw me rescue you, only in your dream, you were helping me out, instead of the other way around. Dreams are funny things you know, and it happens..." I didn't dare mention the dream I had been having when she had awakened me. 21
"Wha? That's silly. No... No, I was deffinately helping you.... Besides, it was differant, the surroundings, the people. All of it, differant." She went on. "And you had a sword... Like the one you had tonight, only... oh, this sounds so stupid... You had your guitar first and it changed into a sword. There was another angel there too... What was his name? Hmmmm... " she went on thinking aloud.22
I watched the entire thing unfold with one eyebrow raised, the mention of the transforming guitar had caught my attention full force. 23
"Gabriel." She looked down, "Yes, that was it, I'm sure... Gabriel, and he's the one that told me you were in grave danger and that I should help you in any way that I could. " 24
I laughed at that...until I saw the hurt look on her face... She was beginning to cry. 25
I knelt beside the couch were she was sitting. If there is one weakness I have in this God Forsaken world, it's to see an innocent cry. A deep sigh, and a long blink, I knew what she was saying was true. Now I had to explain it to her. But how? How do you tell a mortal being that you are an immortal that has roamed the earth for more than two thousand years? How do you tell them that your father is one of the most written about angels in all the worlds, and how do you explain this to someone you've just met? And what if it was all some strange coencidence? What if I told her all this and it turned out to be just a dream of another silly human, happening to get some facts strait? I raised my hand to her cheek, she lifted her tear stained eyes to meet mine, it turns out it wasn't that hard after all....26
"When you asked me before, if I believed in Angels... I said I was looking at one." I searched her faace to see if she was following me so far. She was, "Well, it wasn't entirely a comeon line. I am, well, not directly, of course, but... " I raised my hand into my own eyeline..."Now... now I am." 27
A wide smile grew on her face, "Get out of here..." she laughed. "Your an Angel? Yeah... whatever, mister I've been arrested more times than I can count." 28
"Well, I'm not anymore, I was.... I'm fallen. I was cast from heaven, my father... Gabriel, he disowned me, and I was banished to Earth." I answered. 29
She rolled her eyes.30
"It was wrong of me to come here... I'm sorry... Your right, it was just a stupid dream." she got up and pushed by me to the door.31
"No, Wait! Please, don't go." I begged. "I thought at first that it was, but you had to many coincidental facts, to much information, for it to be just a dream. I think that maybe, after all these years, my Father is trying to send me a message to me." I can't help but to smile. 32
"Then why wouldn't he just talk to you directly?" she asked as she turned to face me again. "Are you mad?" she asked on a second thought, and on a third she added, "Am I? My God, I'm actually listening to this rubbish!" 33
***34
"No, your not mad." I assured her. "You just happened to be the one that my Father chose to help me through all this, whatever it is." I looked at her. Her eyes said that she was scared to death. "Look, I had a dream about you too, just before you came here. You were standing over me, and telling me that I was in Danger. Then you knocked on the door and woke me." I went on to wonder why Gabriel hadn't contacted me himself. He was a messenger of God. He has free roam of the Earth, but perhaps I needed the girls help with something. And now that I focussed on her, there was something.... Strange about her. Something, not quite human. Some divine presence in her that I had only felt once before. 35
"You dreamed of me? Are you reall an angel?" She asked.36
I removed my jacket and stood. I turned my back to her, and pulled my shirt up to reveal my scarred shoulder blades. 37
Kailas looked on quietly, the two scars running across his shoulder were miraculous, about 3 inches wide, 5 inches long, and identical to each other. "Your... Shoulders.... That's were your wings....." I heard her gasp and turned just in time to catch her as she fainted. I took her to the couch, laid her across it, and covered her bare legs with a throw blanket. Piper looked up at me, I just shrugged. I sat in the recliner across from the couch, thinking, as I awaited Kailas to wake. 38
For two thousand years, I had not once heard from my father, nor my creator. I had lived in silence and solitude for many of them, it had not been until the last 200 years that I actually started making friends, so why now? I had faced danger before, and noone had offered to utter a single word. What sort of danger would warrant a warning from heaven? None that I had not yet faced. None that I could name. I dozed off while I thought. I had been exhausted. 39
As I slept, again I was taken across the border from reality into the world of dreams. This time it was my Father that I saw before me. "Come to me, Galen." he said, refussing to call me son. I approached and said nothing. "You are in grave peril, Galen. You have been flaunting yourself, and forgotten where you came from." 40
That got my nerves in a bundle. "Forgotten where I came from?" I yelled at the bright aura of light that surrounded the messanger of the devine. "I have never forgotten the place...or the people... That have forgotten me. Never once in all my travels, never once in any of my endevours have I forgotten those who turned there backs on me for a simple mistake that any child could have made. I have lived more than two thousand years under the assumption that I would never see you again." tears of anger began to form at the corners of my eyes." And you, you disowning me was the worst part. I could deal with being cast out, as you had been, I could deal with having my wings removed, the physical pain that I endured was nothing compared to the heartache I suffered from loosing you. The differance is, that I would never again be an angel, you were welcomed back with open arms, and I am left here to suffer until the end of this God forsaken world. "41
"Galen, listen to me, and heed me well. This is not a social call, I have not come to hear you moan and groan about what you have suffered. I have come to warn you. If you do not leave L.A. you will be faced with an enemy unlike any you have seen. Lucifer has raised the price on your head, and with all your publicity over the past two decades, you have made it easy on them to track you. I can say no more, save this, prepare yourself, son, it will not be long." 42
"But the girl, what does she have to do with any of this?" I say awestruck that he has called me son.43
"Time will reveal her use. What lies in darkness will be brought into the light, all that is hidden shall be revealed." and Gabriel spread his massive and glorious wings, " I must go, Godspeed, son."44
I watched as he disappeared into the night sky of the dream realm, and becanme nothing more than another glimmer of a bright star..... 45
