Icarus' Saviour : The Forbidden Documents

PROLOGUE:1

He smirked, feeling the sun on his skin. He looked down at the drop beneath him, letting the wind blow his fringe in to his clear green eyes, whipping his face.2

The drop from the cliff was pretty high, like four Canary Wharfs piled on top of each other, floored by a bed of jagged rocks, on to which, every so often, a wave crashed.3

The rising sun on the horizon cast shadows, and lit up the drop at the same time.4

He watched the sun rise for a few minutes, then stepped off. Something most people would consider suicidal.5

The rush of falling was nothing compared to what he felt when he unfurled his wings and soared up to the heavens.6

One: 7

At a time of the year when most girls would be bitching about their hair getting frizzy because of the heat, Maverick Delaney had no such problem.8

Her only problem was how long it would take her hair gel to melt and her spiky hair to droop. And this problem bugged her. It bugged her a lot.9

The day she watched a boy with blond hair, dressed in a pair of faded Levis and not much else, step off of a cliff hadn't been the best day of her life. 10

And it was only sun rise.11

She was sitting on the beach below the cliff, and watching the sun rise when some unknown sense told her to look up. So, for once, she did. 12

Just in time to see him step off the cliff and plummet to certain death. 13

Boy was she wrong about that one.14

Halfway through his fall, and she couldn't tear her eyes away, he unfurled a pair of wings and soared towards the farthest reaches of the sky.15

Yeah, she thought she was hallucinating too.16

X X X17

Icarus wasn't aware that anyone was watching him until he looked down halfway through his flight. 18

And when he looked down, he saw a girl in a bikini top and surf shorts staring up at him in amazement. Luckily, she hadn't screamed.19

He shot back down to earth, landing beside her. His ultimate defense system kicked in, and he grabbed hold of her.20

"Who sent you?" he asked, feeling really stupid, and really paranoid. Only the Angels and the Fallen were usually up on beaches at this hour in the morning.21

"You what?" she asked, as he shook her, and his grip tightened, "I was just here watching the sunrise, so you flying was as much of a shock to me as me being here seems to be to you."22

He stared at her, attempting to read her thoughts. The only thought he got was a perfectly clear message:23

FUCK OFF.24

"Do you think, maybe, you could let go of me? You're hurting my arms." she said, seeming unfazed by his wings, which were curling around them in a menacing way. 25

He dropped her, and she took a step back.26

"Who are you?" he asked, studying her features. She didn't have the clarity of features of an Angel, and despite the sadness in her soul, she didn't have the darkness to be one of the Fallen. She had mismatched eyes, brown hair with natural highlights and a really penetrating stare. 27

Despite him being the Angel, he felt like she was looking through his being... not a usual thing from a mortal.28

"Maverick. Delaney. Why the hell do you have wings?" she asked, looking up at the feathers brushing against her head. 29

"I... why are you here?" he asked, avoiding answering the question he knew he'd have to answer, and if he answered it, the gods would probably strike her down where she stood, like Semele and Zeus' thunderbolt. 30

"I like sun rises. I just chose to come here today." she replied, looking at him as if he were stupid. 31

They stood in silence. Well, what would have been silence if the seagulls around them hadn't started a cacophony sounding strangely like the "mine" call that the seagulls in Finding Nemo seemed to have. And if a really big wave hadn't crashed over them right at that moment.32

And Maverick, unlike every other girl she knew, didn't shriek. Instead, she tensed up completely, and shut her eyes. Icarus shed his current wings to save from having to dry out the feathers. As soon as they detached from his back they disappeared, turning in to dust. 33

He watched as she kept her eyes shut, hearing her swearing in her head. Water dripped from her hair, running down her face, and he found himself smiling. Her eyes snapped open, and she shook her head, sending water showering over him.34

She opened her eyes, and gave a slight disapproving shake of her head.35

"I have to go." she said, "School and all that." Then she walked away, not turning back, wondering if the close encounter with that guy had been real or a hallucination.36

Icarus watched her leave, and felt something really strange tugging at him. He looked up towards the sky and grew a new set of wings, recognising the call of Pan, the God of Mischief.37

Two:38

Pan settled down in his favourite armchair as Icarus flew up to see him.39

"Who's the broad?" he asked, fiddling with his beard. Now, Pan is a little red guy with a beard, horns, a forked tail and a very... familiar laugh. Now, considering Lucifer was The Devil, Icarus found it really funny to tease Pan about being the model of the Christian devil.40

"Maverick Delaney. She saw me in flight." Icarus replied.41

"Ic. One word. Helstraf." Pan shifted slightly, worried for his favourite Angel. 42

And before anything can be said, yes, Icarus is the Icarus who supposedly flew too close to the sun and fell back to earth with a splatter. And yes, it did actually happen. Or would have happened if Pan and Lucifer hadn't intervened. But that's another story.43

Maverick wandered out of school in a pair of black and white surf shorts and a t-shirt declaring "If at first you don't succeed, find out if the loser gets anything. - Bill Lyon."44

She came to a sudden halt before the entrance. The guy from the beach was leaning against the wall beside the door. Just minus the wings. He straightened when he saw her, and smiled slightly.45

"What are you doing here?" she asked, "Don't you have anything better to do than follow me around?"46

"I'm Icarus." he said, ignoring her questions.
