What you probably didn’t know was that a long time ago the lions had a lot of fur. In fact they had as much fur as a mane has today.
There once lived a young lion. Rory the lion was his nickname. His friends called him that because he snored so loud when he was sleeping. His friends laughed and teased him playfully when they found out about his peculiar problem. At a sleepover at Rory’s house (for his birthday party) everyone slept as far away as at all possible from Rory. In the middle of the night Rory’s
mischievous friends did a prank on him. They took some scissors and set to work.
By morning Rory had what we now call a mane. Now back then the gazelles were the enemies of the lions. They would steal the lions’ food.
“AWHOOO!!!” he heard. Rory felt scared. Their food might be stolen! Suddenly Rory had a brilliant idea. He told his friends about it.
As soon as Rory stepped out of his house, he wished he hadn’t. Hundreds of gazelles stood before him. He roared loudly. There was an odd silence. All of the sudden, the gazelles broke out in laughter! They rolled over and over until they hurt. Meanwhile the “normal” lions bit them and killed them. The lions had a grand feast that night. Everyone cut their fur like Rory the lion. That’s how the lions have their fur cut today. Now the lions hunt gazelles, thanks to Rory, their happy hero.1

Interesting, you sort of mashed it all together. If you added more detail about how the lions looked before they cut their fur. You have some short, choppy sentences that can be fixed by combining them together. For instance, 'He roared loudly. There was an odd silence.' You could combined them.
It is a cute story.
