Sophia kicked her boombox and sighed. The batteries had already died and she had just changed them a few days ago. She began to shiver as wind shook through the trees around her. Translucent leaves had turned into brown crisps and silently glided to the ground. 1
She slid down a rough tree and sat, staring at her tennis shoes. Now, she'd never hear the CD. She looked down at the note that had come with it. All it said was, "Listen with a friend." It had been passed around her school for years now, but no one spoke of what was on it. The old scratched burnt CD was said to contain the greatest song ever made.2
She had heard Sheila Jackson talking about how amazing it was to a popular upperclassman, but the upperclassman had just laughed at Sheila. Now, Sophia had the CD in her hands, and it was hers to brag and act so cool about. 3
Leaves crackled as Leonard entered the clearing in the woods. He smiled. "So, did you get it to work?" 4
She frowned. "The stupid boombox won't work."5
She felt the recognition slipping through her fingers already. The kid who listened to the CD the night before always came into school, and was bombarded with questions. Surprisingly, each person never admitted to anything. She wanted to tell the world what was on the CD, she wanted to be remembered as the one who let the whole world hear the song!6
Gwen would be angry with her for ruining it all. Gwen would definitely blame herself, saying it was her fault for letting Sophia borrow the CD. Sophia didn't mind. Gwen was one person, and Sophia would be worth a hundred come tomorrow. 7
"Well, do you want to go get some new batteries?" Leonard said, breaking Sophia's hopeful trance.8
"Oh - uh, sure. There's a little store on the edge of the forest. Yeah, let's go there," Sophia said, cheering up.9
Leonard smiled and said, "Should we take the CD player with us?"10
Sophia shook her head. "It's safe out here. No one knows about this spot but me - well, me and you now."11
Sophia led the way into the forest. Her long brown hair waved in the wind as she walked along. Leonard followed behind, taking in the scenery like a starving person given a bag of bread.12
She shot curious stares back at him ever so often. is short brown hair was kept neat, and his thick rimmed glass seemed to never move, no matter how much he moved. He was just a calm, happy guy. Sophia stopped. Leonard was grinning at a tree behind her. He slowly reached for a lingering Butterfly from summer, but was only met with quick escape. He reached out to grab it, but fell forward. She chuckled at him and shook her head. "What are you doing?"13
He brushed the autumn leaves off of his pants, and grinned. "I just wanted to catch a butterfly. It's on my list of somedays."14
Sophia cocked her eyebrow, and she smiled as if he'd said a joke. It faded as she realized he was being truthful. "You have a list? What's on it?"15
"Oh, nothing-"16
"Come on, lemme see it."17
"No, it's-"18
