To The Grave - Chapter One

~Halifax, Nova Scotia, Central Atlantica, September, 2062~

The room was dark but airy, the small hum of an air conditioner breaking the silence that seemed to hang there. Two individuals worked quietly as they effectively searched through desk and computer. They both stopped and looked as a noise sounded outside the door, then went back to what they were doing as the noise moved on.2

There was a dinner party going on one floor below, and an occasional guest would walk by in search of the facilities, or a quiet room for a little party action. The two in the room worked side by side, needing the closeness in case someone walked into the room. If found, they were to act as lovers who had slipped away for a quiet moment or two. 3

"Almost done?" the male whispered as he put articles back the way he had found them both on the desk and in the drawers. He glanced at his partner as she grunted in concentration, his eyes travelling to her shirt that was open in preventive anticipation of someone interrupting them. 4

"Keep your eyes to yourself," she whispered without looking at him. She unhooked a small device from the side of the computer and tucked it into her pocket. "Done." 5

They both headed to the door as she buttoned up her blouse, intentionally putting one button in the wrong hole to make it look like they had been doing something else in the room other than stealing classified information. 6

~~~~~~~~~~ 7
After dinner drinks were being served as the couple made their way through the large crowd, mingling with the other guests, and distancing themselves from each other. In a few minutes, the woman’s cellular phone rang, and she answered it. 8
"Hello?" she asked, then waited a few moments before adopting a concerned expression. "What’s his temperature?" she asked, loud enough for a few people to hear. "Of course. I’ll leave now and be home in twenty minutes." She disconnected the call, made a show of looking for the party’s host, and approached the distinguished looking woman who stood in the middle fo the crowd, subtly surrounded by security guards. 9
"My apologies, Senator," the woman said with a small smile. "My sitter just informed me that my son seems to have the flu." 10
"You’ll be leaving, then," the Senator replied in a fake diplomatic voice. "Of course. Family comes first, and it must." 11
The woman nodded politely, turned, and kept the smile on her face as she walked across the room, collected her wrap and purse, and walked out the door into the unseasonably warm autumn night. 12
The man she had been in the office with watched as she left, then turned his attention to the woman who was approaching from across the room. 13
"Senator," he said warmly and grasped her hand as she reached him. "Always a pleasure to spend time with you." 14
~~~~~~~~~~~ 15

The woman drove not to her home, or to any home, but straight to a nondescript office building ten blocks away from the place where the dinner party had been. She was ushered into a small room where she handed over the information she had collected, then she turned and walked out without a single word. 16

Getting back into her vehicle, she paused long enough to make sure that no one was watching, and then drove off into the night. 17

After she had gone around a corner, a car started on the other side of the parking lot, pulled out, and started to follow. 18

In the office building, people were already checking out the information supplied, verifying certain issues, and passing it on to various departments. 19

~~~~~~~~~~ 20
"Absolutely not!" 21
Directeur Bermen of the Central Atlantica Security Force sighed as the woman in front of him stared out the window. "Senator Plow," he began smoothly, "My operatives have uncovered a plot to have you assassinated. I believe it may be in your best interest to listen to our recommendations." 22
Senator Valerie Plow turned from the window and glared. A formidable woman in her late forties, the Senator had the hardened look of a politician who had gambled much, and stepped on many to get to where she was. Pegged to be the next leader of Central Atlantica, the Senator had many enemies, and many more people who merely wished her ill. 23
"I will not run and hide at this rumor." She gave him a look that had earned her the unflattering nickname of "HAB" amongst various military and government agencies. The initials, which stood for ‘hard assed bitch’ had been given to her by a former member of the military when she had given a scathing review of what she pegged as the Border Debacle. 24
"Senator…" 25
"I will not." 26
"At least limit your public appearances for the next week until we can ascertain whether this attempt is true or not." He waited for the expected outburst, but relaxed slightly as she seemed to consider his words. 27
"You’ve got four days." 28
~~~~~~~~~~~~ 29

Their bodies melted into each other as the bed below them moved in rhythm, the slight creaking drowned out by their frantic moans. Kyle Suene kissed the woman deeply as her arms wrapped around his shoulders and started to move faster into her as his lips moved to her waiting neck. Her back arched below him and fingernails ran down his back, prompting him to increase. 30

His concentration was broken for a moment as someone started to knock on his door, but he put it out of his mind and continued with his driving the woman below him into a sexual frenzy. 31

"Oh, God!" she hissed into his hair, as his lips started to softly suck on her neck, the sensation in direct contrast with the urgency that he was stirring between her thighs. "Kyle," she moaned her voice shaky with sexual desire. 32

Kyle smiled against her neck, knowing that he was teasing the woman with him, and knowing that both of them were enjoying it immensely. He switched gears, slowly to an incredibly slow and deliberate pace, and raised his head to look down at her. 33

"Please," she whispered, "Kyle…please." 34

Deciding that he had prolonged it enough, and not sure that he himself would be able to contain his own climax much longer, his head dipped back to hers. Their tongues darted in and out, the kiss growing frantic to match his thrusts. They exploded at the same time, causing her to drag her fingernails sharply down his back; a movement that only served to excite him further as he pushed harder into her wanting body. 35

After both had been completely spent, they lay there on his bed together, still locked in a lovers embrace, his lips covering hers as both sought to remain in the delight of the moment. Eventually, and far too soon for him, he pulled back slightly and looked down at her. One hand came up to brush gently across his cheek, and he kissed it as it traversed over his lips. He slowly slid off her body to the bed beside her. 36

He sighed as the knocking on his door continued, and got out of bed, grabbed a pair of shorts and pulled them on as he made his way out to the living room. He pulled open the front door to his cottage and glared at the two men there. His hand came up and slapped a sign that was tacked to the ancient wood door. 37

"Just which part of ‘Do not disturb’ are you not quite comprehending." 38

One of the two men took a small envelope out of his suit pocket and held it out. He waited for Kyle to take it, but all he got was a hostile glare. "Commander Suene," the man said. 39

"No," Kyle said. "Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have someone to do, and you two really should get the hell off of my property." He shut the door in their expressionless faces, and turned to walk away. He looked at the ceiling as the knocking started again, and shook his head as he opened the door. 40

~~~~~~~ 41
Kyle had his elbow on the table, head in his hand, and nearly leaned over as he looked at her. He had tuned her out a while back, and wondered when she was ever going to stop talking. He may have been a bit of a masochist, but listening to her ramble on was a little too painful to endure…even for him. His eyes flicked across the room in front of him, and he tried not to sigh at the sterile simplicity of it all. Bare walls, a colour somewhere between white and off-white, it was the same standard room that could be found on any military base in the country. 42
His mind started to wander as he thought about why he was here. He’d done his time, served his country, and had gone immensely far and above the call of duty. Only thirty-eight, with blonde hair that made him look about ten years younger, and well defined features, he had risen swiftly through the military ranks, achieving Commander before he was thirty. 43
After leaving the military four years ago, he had been content in his little cottage, satisfied to live out the remainder of his life doing nothing more than watching the waves crash against the shore, hear the seagulls cry, and bang the occasional babe he brought home from the local bar. 44
He pulled his attention back, slightly annoyed to find the woman still talking. Luckily though, she seemed to be wrapping it up; too bad he hadn’t heard a word she said. 45
"Commander Suene," she said. 46
"Yes?" he replied, then added, "It’s not Commander anymore. I’m retired. Kyle’s fine." 47
"Commander," she repeated. "I just finished explaining to you why you’ve been reactivated." 48
"Oh. Apparently I wasn’t listening." 49
"Apparently." She leaned back and gave him a look that showed she was not impressed. "Would you like me to repeat it?" 50
"Not unless you want to put me to sleep," he replied, not moving from his ultra relaxed position. If anything, he leaned a little closer to the table. "I don’t want to be here, and unless you can convince me in ten words or less why I should be, I’m walking." 51
She glared at him. "Senator Plow is rumored to be pegged for assassination." 52
"Senator Plow would most likely deserve it," Kyle replied in a bored voice. He finally straightened in his seat and stretched lazily. "If she had her way, the entire military would be disbanded, and it’s soldiers shipped off somewhere, seemingly unfit for civilian life." 53
"I take it you don’t like Senator Plow," she replied mildly. 54
"She’s a bitch." He smiled slightly at the look on her face. "Don’t look so shocked. The Senator knows what I think of her." He pushed his chair back and stood. "If there’s nothing else, I’ll be on my way." 55
"Keren Pelgrew is the assassin." 56
Kyle went completely still as he stared, then blindly felt his way back to his seat. "You’ve convinced me."57
    You went from scene to scene quickly, and without the spacers I might have gotten lost. But the story is good! I would like to see it completely done and see what happens. Lots of good imagination here, and enough to keep us coming back for more.
