Waiting for Sunday: Scenes 6-10

1

Scene 6 -2

The scenery is now black (seeing through Jessica's eyes) and a bang is heard. Her eyes open to the tropical scenery. 3

JESSICA - Ow! What the hell was that for? 4

She gives a startled look.5

STEVE - Oh, I’m sorry. Wilson hasn’t been behaving well lately. (speaking in an English accent and pointing and referring to his volley ball) 6

The accent of this muscular handsome young man left Jessica with only a sparkle in her eye and an image of a Prince of Wales. Jessica got up and left as she realizes that she is a main target for the guys playing volley ball. She goes up to her hotel room and then decides to wander around the hotel. She walks around aimlessly realizing that there aren’t many social activities on the resort. She decides to have a drink at the garden bar. The flowers and palm trees around her are beautiful and lush.7

JESSICA - I will have…8

It seems as though she is debating in her mind as to what she should order.9

JESSICA - …a tequila sunrise please. 10

BARTENDER - No problem. 11

He stops what he is doing and point to her.12

BARTENDER - You are Arnaldo's daughter? No? 13

JESSICA - Si. 14

BARTENDER - Special drink for you Linda. 15

JESSICA - My name is not Linda. 16

BARTENDER - Si... Linda means. How do you say? 17

He struggles for the translation of the word in English.18

BARTENDER - ... Beautiful! 19

JESSICA - Oh, I see. Gracias. 20

Jessica gives a mere smile. The man she just spoke with is old enough to be her father. The man that accidentally hit Jessica with the volleyball sees her trying to make a getaway from the bothersome bartender. Steve decides to go save Jessica. He knows that she feels uncomfortable because of the squeamish look on her face.21

STEVE - Sorry about the whole volleyball thing today. I'm Steve. 22

He flashes his English one of a kind Prince of Wales sort of smile.23

STEVE - It’s nice to see someone reading around here. It seems like all everyone knows how to do in this resort is drink Presidente and dance the meringue. 24

They both laugh.25

JESSICA - Yeah, I guess. I haven’t been here long enough to know that much about the locals, although my father acts as a fine representation of one. 26

She rolls her eyes.27

STEVE - Mhmm, I guess... 28

He gives a confused look and shrugs. 29

JESSICA - Okay well, I'm off. I'll see you around. 30

She turns away.31

STEVE - Wait, I never got your name! 32

She turns back.33

JESSICA - I don’t seem to know anymore. Everyone around here calls me Linda. 34

STEVE - Come to dinner with me tonight... I'll be waiting in the lobby for you, "Linda". 35

He winks at her. She rolls her eyes and turns away with a skeptical look but later gives a sheepish smile. 36

Scene 7 - 37

Steve pulls back Jessica’s chair and they sit down. He folds his hands, tilts his head and looks her in the eye. Steve is a very innocent looking character. 38

STEVE - So, did you just arrive here? Actually, first off. What is your real name? 39

She giggles.40

JESSICA - It’s Jessica and yes, I just arrived yesterday. My father’s company is somehow affiliated with the hotel so I get to stay here for a good price. I came here because I needed some time away from my mom in Canada. Things needed to change and I haven’t seen my dad in a while. 41

STEVE - Oh, is that right. How long are you planning on staying? 42

JESSICA - Not too sure yet. I doubt it will be forever though, just before I get sick of it. 43

Steve laughs but Jessica is serious.44

STEVE - Ahem. Well I’m here for my twentieth birthday. I have some friends in Santo Domingo who wanted to see me and it was so ironic because the night I turned twenty they had fireworks. 45

JESSICA - How was it ironic that your friends planned on having fireworks for you? 46

STEVE - They didn’t plan it. It was someone else doing it and they told me they had planned it. They are pretty sly to tell you the truth. I’ve got to meet up with them one more time before I leave. 47

JESSICA - When are you leaving? 48

STEVE - Not for a couple of weeks. So what exactly do you enjoy doing? 49

JESSICA - Hmmm, well. What do you mean? What do I want to do for the rest of my life? I think it would be pretty cool to go to University for Theatre and then become a renown Broadway dancer. I’ve been dancing since I was three. It’s impossible to be half Dominican and not be influenced by dance. I guess it’s become a passion and something I want to do for the rest of my life. I don’t know if I could tolerate the fame though. 50

She tosses her hair and looks away. They both laugh.51

STEVE - Ahhh, I see. Well all the best to you and your future endeavors. I’m studying marine biology in University. Hopefully it will get me somewhere. Somewhere hot. I wish I could live in the tropics forever. Just looking down in the ocean. Ever been? 52

JESSICA - No, I haven’t. You mean scuba diving? Are you crazy? I’m scared shitless. Watched Jaws too many times.  But before I die I do want to ride a dolphin. I think they are the most beautiful creatures in the sea. As for the land, its horses. They are so gorgeous. 53

STEVE - I agree. 54

The camera zooms out from their tiny table on the wooden deck right next to a bush with a considerably striking pink flower. Fades to black.55

Scene 8 - 56

After their first date the two wait for the elevator to come. They are both laughing. 57

STEVE - Yeah. Could you believe it? The Muppets? For God’s sake! 58

JESSICA - And it’s just that Fozzy guy. Or is it Fonzo? 59

STEVE - Gonzo! Yeah he was so cool! 60

SC # 3 - Elevator bell rings61

They both get into the elevator. Usually you would think they were both drunk but they were not. They had no alcohol with dinner. It was just that they both enjoyed each others company without having to rely on alcoholic beverages. The elevator stops at the third floor.62

SC # 4 - Elevator bell rings63

Steve walks Jessica to her room and there they wait contently just staring into each others eyes. 64

SC # 5 - More than Words - Extreme65

STEVE - Well I had a really good night. 66

JESSICA - So did I. I guess I’ll see you around. Thanks for dinner. 67

STEVE - No problem. Goodnight. 68

She closes the door. He wait’s a good thirty seconds, smiles, and returns back to the elevator. He then proceeds to his room on the fifth floor. The camera only follows until when he  gets into the elevator.69

Scene 9  - Two weeks later. 70

SC # 6 - Telephone ring.71

Jessica picks up the phone. 72

JESSICA - Right now? Where are we going? Are you sure… okay. 73

She hangs up the phone and quickly gets dressed. 74

SC # 7 - Click sound.75

She trips while putting on her jeans. 76

SC # 8 - Loud bang.77

SC # 9 - Carry this Picture - Dashboard Confessional. 78

Jessica grabs her purse after she finishes getting dressed and runs out of the room, down the stairs and into the lobby. She stands around looking for Steve. All of a sudden he approaches her from behind her. Jessica is happy to see him.79

STEVE - How long have you been waiting? 80

JESSICA - Just got here. 81

STEVE - Great. Lets go. 82

JESSICA - Where are we going? 83

He grabs her hand and begins walking outside of the hotel.84

STEVE - You’ll see.85

They get start walking. The camera follows them from a birds eye view. They walk in the middle of the street and sellers approach them. Over time the two have walked a long way. They stop at a bar by the street to get some refreshments.86

JESSICA - So where are we going? I don’t know if this was such a good idea I’m going to get into trouble. 87

STEVE - Jess, don’t worry. We’ll be okay. No one will find out. 88

The camera zooms into the beer advertisement for Presidente. 89

Scene 10 - 90

As the sun begins to set they finally arrive at their destination. There are horses all around them. Jessica begins to get all giddy and goes to pet the horses.91

STEVE - Hop on. 92

JESSICA - We get to ride them? This is awesome!   93

STEVE - I was hoping you’d like it. I’ve realized that you mean a lot to me and the past two weeks have been great. 94

SC # 10 - I Could Fall in Love - Selena95

They both ride through abundant sugar cane fields, small towns and forested areas. They stop at a small market and grab a Coca-Cola. Then, they both sit down by the dirt road.96

JESSICA - Wow, this is so amazing. I’m so glad we got to do this together! 97

STEVE - Same here. You want to know something? 98

JESSICA - Sure. 99

STEVE - I bought this horse for you. I named it after you because it reminded me of your timeless beauty. 100

JESSICA - Wow. I don’t know what to say. No one has ever done anything like this for me…   101

STEVE - Really? 102

JESSICA - Yes, really. It’s been two weeks since I arrived here. The first day I asked my dad if I could go to Santo Domingo and he still hasn’t let me. 103

STEVE - I guess he’s scared that you’ll get into trouble and he doesn’t want that? 104

JESSICA - No, he’s just like my mother! He doesn’t want me to be happy. I don’t ask for much you know. To tell you the truth I don’t even know why I came. For some reason I thought things would be different. Sometimes I just wish I was in a castle on a cloud in heaven away from any problems. 105

STEVE - You’re in Santo Domingo aren’t you? Things happen for certain reasons Jess, and you can’t stop them. Lets go grab something to eat. 106

She hugs him and they joke around. They walk together down the street to a petite restaurant. They sit down. She grabs the menu and looks at it for a few moments.107

JESSICA - All they have is chicken? 108

STEVE - I guess?… 109

He turns to the waiter. 110

STEVE - Where can we get something other than chicken? 111

JESSICA - Yes, I want a steak. Do you have any? 112

The waiter just looks at them and nods. Another head waiter comes to the rescue.113

HEAD WAITER - Steak? Two hours out of Santo Domingo. No steak here.114

JESSICA - Okay, I guess I’ll have the fried chicken… again. 115

Scene fades into Steve’s conscientious blue eyes.116
