Eddie quickly leaned up in bed, and all evidence of being tired was gone. He was scarred. The red glow of the alarm clock came back on, and it was flashing 12:00. But the light at the bottom of the bathroom door remained off. Fear, was what Eddie now felt. The end of term paper he forgot to do was of no concern. He sat still, for several minutes, until he was able to move his vocal chords.
“Dean” He said in a very low tone.
No response.
“Dean” he said again.
Nothing.
Eddie sat up in bed for several more minutes, until he was able to move his legs. He, slowly, pushed the covers off his body, and stood up. The only light shinning in the room was the dull gray of the rainy morning sky, and his flashing alarm clock.
Eddie stood there for several more minutes, until he was able to move his feet, and slowly, he began to walk towards the bathroom door.
“Dean.” He began to call out again with a little more strength.
No response.1
Eddie reaches out for the doorknob, grabs hold of it, and stops. Fear is making him quiver. He stops breathing. When he is able to take back control of his arm, he slowly turns the doorknob, and starts to open.
“Dean” he says for the last time.
No response.
When the door is finally open all Eddie can see is black. He finds the light switch again and he freezes up. Taking in a deep breath he turns it on.
Floating in the bath is the lifeless form of Dean fully dressed. A white, two slot toaster, bobs in the water next to his right leg.2

Someone committing suicide, is, almost always a surprise. And Dean was no exception. He had a better life than most. With a steady job, that he loved, a mother, and father who supported everything he did, and friends who were always by his side. How could this happen? Eddie was shocked. Explanations ran through his head. There must be a reason. Was it the pressure of college, having to pay off loans, making a career choice? No, there’s no way. Dean was always good when it came to school. He graduated having the second highest grades in his class, which meant scholarships, many of them. He already had a job waiting for him when he graduated. Nothing made sense. And Eddie needs closure. And more than that he needs to get away form this place.
